Cortinarius Questions
    #14583285 - 06/09/11 03:11 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

A few questions about cortinarius.. Sorry if some sound stupid.

I have read that cortinarius containing orellanine will glow under UV light. Is this correct?
(If it is not true ignore the rest of the questions)

Does that mean that even dry, mushrooms that contain orellanine will glow under UV light?
Is it safe to assume that cortinarius that do not glow under UV light are not poisonous?
Is orellanine the only poisonous toxin in cortinarius?
Does anyone have any pictures of any mushrooms that contain orellanine under UV light?
Does cortinarius rotundisporus contain orellanine?

the only clue I can give you is cortinarius that don't glow under UV are still poisonous. The only known edible corts are C. rozites, and c. armallatus. Orellanine is not the only toxin in corts.

Orellanine glows under black light. I'm not sure how much the various orellanine containing species glow. But there are a bunch of Cortinarius species that glow various colors, and the color they glow is important for their identification.

Toxins in the genus Cortinarius have not been studied much at all. The main reason orellanine has been studied is because of the large number of poisonings it has caused. Lots of other species in the genus are known to be poisonous, but little is known about the toxins.

There is really no reason to worry about it, as none of the species has any reputation for being worth eating. Even Captain MacIlvaine, a guy who thought stinkhorns were wonderful to eat, thought that all Cortinarius were completely worthless as food, and tasted like rotted wood.

One of the primary reasons there has been so little study is that they are extremely difficult as a group to identify to species. Most professional mycologists will not do much more than tell you they're Cortinarius.

Happy mushrooming!

Certain clades of Cortinarius are edible and new genetic research helps people with the edibility question since it is relatively safe to eat a species that is closely related to a known edible one.

Cortinarius is not as dangerous as most people think, most species are probably edible.  There are a few different toxins in various members though.

Some of the purple corts look almost exactly like blewits so they must get eaten accidentally occasionally, but no serious poisonings from purple corts have been reported.

Contact Dimitar if you are considering eating a cort, he has sequenced hundreds of collections and has some theories regarding which ones are safer.
