Morel hunting in Pennsylvania
    #14305869 - 04/17/11 11:57 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I hope I haven't been missing out! I just realized that its been raining for weeks here! However, its been a little cold.In what temp/conditions do morels start!? Or, if anyone is in western PA, when do morels start!?

I never know what to do in morel season. They just grow anywhere. Is there really any secret or is it just something you must have experience with? I usually just go out walking.

They've already started. Look for black morels under hardwoods like ash and elm or maybe tulip poplars. Places with a limestone substrate are best. Go now!

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

I'm just a little bit south of you.. in the valley. The season here starts a little bit later. Technically it can be right now, but I've made most significant finds within the first week or two of May.

you be looking for tiny blacks in micro climates, like valleys, wait for a warm spell in a week or two and they be everywhere! the north eastern season is just starting, fruits are growing...

I went out for a few hours and didn't find anything. That area could be bad though because i didn't find more than 20 last year.

Last year we had our driest April since 1938. This year is set to be our driest since records began.

I've given up hope of finding Morels in the near future. :frown:
