    #14210893 - 03/30/11 07:45 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Found these today. Wonder how you can tell a false morel from the rest.

also does anyone know if you should dry them before selling? I heard they go for about $50 an ounce. So is that wet or dry?

none of those are false morels:grin:I've never seen $50/ounce, but they could go for as much as $20/pound on e-bay

Ebay has morels selling for around $20-25/4 oz dried.

It really depends on who you're selling to.  I'd imagine some high-end restaurants would pay top dollar for fresh morels, since they're relatively difficult to get.

If you're really set on selling them, I think your best bet is to call the nicer restaurants near you, and see if they're interested.

Let us know how it goes!

I sold on ebay once and got a complaint about freshness. The super dude would only let me send them fresh sealed in plastic even though I argued but he paid me anyways in the end. Now all my local restaurants get them.

Those all look like morels to me!  I usually can tell a false morel because the stem appears longer and unlike the true morel, the stem and cap are not connected (fused) and hollow. Also unlike a hollow stem in a morel, the "pecker heads" as we call them have white mycelial growth on the inside.  Here is a link that shows a few pictures of False Morels aka "pecker heads".

Oh yeah, most the vendors in my area pay between $20 and $80 a pound wet.  The price mainly depends on how well the local picking season goes in the spring.  Last year was a horrible year in my area.  Weather conditions stunk and caused a shitty sparse growing season.  I knew of some vendors paying over $125 a pound wet, because of so little supply locally.  this year is shaping up to be a lot better growing season so far.  We usually start seeing them mid April.  The weather is gradually warming and the ground moisture content is excellent.  as long as we don't get a really warm stretch of weather in the next week or so, things will be good come mid to late April!  Happy hunting and Good Luck to all who venture in the woods looking for this wonderful delicacy!

Yes, i find some about every year.  Usually in the early part of the morel season.  My first outing two springs ago, i found a Honey Hole of "DickHeads" with a few grey morels mixed in.  Grey morels usually come up before the big yellows in our area.
Remember this at the very least. if you are in doubt, don't eat it.  A good rule of thumb is checking the inside of the stem, if its not hollow, its not a morel.

http://www.morels.com

Go to this and check the message boards.  There are plenty of buyers and vendors.  Most of the buyers are restaurants and venders that sell them back to you.

If you don't mind my asking, may I know what county? They're probably popping up all around here and I should look, but I'm just curious. If you don't want to answer, I respect that. Also, I assume weight is dry due to ease of storage and transport.

Fulton county.... they were along a stream in the usual terrain but we found a little patch among some pine trees... there wasn't any pine straw on the ground in this area but there was a bunch of decaying wood on the ground... found a couple growing right off tree trunk bases. searched a few more areas but came up empty handed

a false morel looks little like a real morel. Real morels have pits and ridges, and false morels are just deformed blobs. Gyrometra esculenta. Thats a false morel, punch that in yahoo pictures
