sailboat restoration project * 2
    #14171748 - 03/23/11 08:09 PM (2 years, 1 month ago)

found her on craig's list for free..

i cleaned her up using steel wool and degreaser.

she's now ready to have inspection ports put in. these ports are needed to inspect and repair any leaks she might have. i plan on adding nylon socks inside the side ports to serve as storage compartments..

once the ports are cut i like to take pictures of the inside to help with the inspection. she looks brand new..

next on the to do list is making a new rudder and dagger board using the old ones a templates, i found 1x12x8 solid redwood boards forsale for $50 at homedepot, i'll also need spar varnish from west marine to seal them up..

left to do:
buy new sail
polish and wax
fix cracks
install hardware
i might make my own trailer.

i forgot to mention that it's a good idea to take photos before taking off the hardware so that you have that as a reference when you go to put everything back on.

You can DIY your sail too if  you wanted:

i started fixing the leak around the centerboard trunk today. if you're new to sailboats and you ever find yourself wanting to restore a day sailer, be sure to check the centerboard trunk for cracks..

i used my dremmel to sand away the first layer around the cracked seam you see in the first picture.

in the second picture you see that i filled the crack using resin and then added a layer of fiberglass cloth and another layer of resin on top. once this cures i'll come back and sand out the rough edges with the dremmel and add a final layer of resin to seal the deal. i'll flip her around and do the other side just the same..

i also filled all screw holes in the deck with resin. i just added tape to the backside of the holes and filled them up. this will make sure i have no leaks through my hardwear screw holes and it will strengthen up those highstress areas.. i'll just have to re-drill them all when it comes time to install the deck hardware.

lastly, i ordered my sail and it will be ready in may. ^_^ oh yeah

Cotton flox in resin will add quite a bit of strength and make it much easier to work with.  When mixed properly (2 parts flox to 1 part resin), it has the consistency of putty and when cured is very strong.  Cotton flox is very cheap (~$4 per lb) and can be found at most marine or aircraft stores.  Sometimes called flocked cotton fiber.

thanks suess, that really helps, i hadn't thought about that. i still have a few more holes to fill that can't be taped off in the back, i'll just cut out some fiberglass fibers, plug the holes and fill with resin.

after you shape the dagger board and rudder you may want to consider planing
them down about 3/16 inch and applying a layer of fiberglass over that oak,
to prevent it from rotting, apply a few extra coats of resin and sand it
smooth with 600 grit and then a 1500 grit

i would use fiberglass and resin but that would ruin the natural look the varnished boards add to the boat.
on the last ones i built i sealed the pores with wood grain sealer/primer and then added about 5 coats of marine varnish..

this reminds me of how long it takes for the varnish to dry between coats.. it might take 2 months to cure entirely. :/

hard decision..

as long as you roll out all the bubbles you should have a glass like surface. woodstrip kayaks are a prime example of fiberglass over wood

we're talking about using a fiberglass mat covered by resin right? wouldn't the criss crosses in the fiberglass be seen through the resin?

i'll have to try that out on a sample piece and if it looks as good as the kayak in that picture i'll definitely use fiber and resin.

only draw back is that i don't think resins have UV block.. ??

i found this link and decided i'll just use varnish and keep it "simple".

http://www.sunfishforum.com/archive/index.php/t-24671.html

either way, it will cost about the same anyway.. just wait till you see that red oak shine with Epiphanes.. :pipesmoke:

I have a whole tree worth of red oak in my barn that should be ready to work
with, I also have cherry, quarter sawn white oak, ipe, mahogany, spanish
cedar, curly and quilted maple, amboynia burl, buckeye burl and a bunch of
others I dont even remember anymore

the varnish will do fine but will degrade a faster, you can get UV inhibitors
in any finish now so it can last longer, I prefer the fiberglass because it
really doesnt show through, provides a bit of support to stop it from
distorting if moisture does get to it but before that I'd prefer a good
quarter sawn mahogany or teak because of the decay resistance, the red oak
will stall last you for many years so it really isnt an issue

and as to whether or not you see the fiberglass through the resin, it depends
on how well you do it, usually a little extra prep and work really pays off

hello shoomery,

hope you all are well, just wanted to let you know i'm still working on the boat, thought about naming her "walks on water.."

anyhow, i'm almost done, $1000 later, about 60 hours of tinkering with all the whosewhowhats.

still working on the rudder and dagger. i'm on the 5th coat and they will most likely need another 5.. arrrrg i've put so much time into this!
