Image quality is brilliant if you use it right. It totally sucks and shows every aspect of your incompetence if you don't Prepare for a learning curve, although in full automatic you can get away with a lot these days as well.
As to video, it's really brilliant, but you'll have to be even more aware of what you're doing, and usually you need a lot of extra equipment to reach professional results. Prepare for a lot of shaky, out of focus shots. But if you put one of these things on a dolly and you conjure up some additional hardware for focusing and zooming, you can get stellar results But that's scarcely a DIY approach anymore.

Is that the rebel XS or XT? I know them as 1000D and 350D respectively, at least that's what i think i do.... Anyway, both are great, the 1000D is pretty cheap and a very good piece of equipment for the price, don't think it has HD video though (fuckers disabled it because it's not an entry-level feature)
Anyway things should get awesome with either one...have fun and maybe come back with some pics...

Not to be taken seriously by any means!

Nice little review sir. You are easily (well within the past couple weeks) one of the more informative posters around here.

the rebel is VERY forgiving and has been its entire model lineup. Try using something like a nikon d2h (still one of my favorite cameras) and see how forgivable that thing is

Yeah, I also only know them by their European names. According to wikipedia, the Rebel XS is the EOS1000D. Which is funny; the first Canon SLR I ever used was an analog 1000F, which was one of the first autofocus SLR's that were accessible to entry-level consumers.

I've used several Canon and Nikon DSLR's, as well as several manual focus film-based cameras as well. In my experience, the Canon and Nikon digital systems are pretty much the same; it mostly depends on what you're used to. If your a Nikonian, Canon cameras tend to be weird and cumbersome, and the other way around. Btw, comparing a D2H with a Rebel XS would be very odd. A Nikon D3000 would make more sense, and as I understand (haven't used it myself), it's just as user-friendly as the Canon equivalent types.
However, with any SLR, you don't have the forgiving huge depth of field that compact cams have, and that tends to be difficult for new users.

I had a rebel xsi and loved it.
I sold it thought because I didn't use it that much, even though I loved the camera. I've been kind of regretting it.

I've got a Rebel XTi, a little older than that model but with similar optics. The image quality is excellent. One of my favorite features is how interchangable the lenses are. My mom has the same camera but a couple of different lenses so we can trade them off. I have a Tamron 18-200mm, it's incredibly versatile and I highly recommend it.
It's got a lot of control over the images, in manual mode especially. Being able to adjust your ISO and shutter speed as well as other variables can ensure that you get the picture you want. Look into different lenses too. They can be pricey but are essential to a wide range of photography.
I'll put up some pics from mine when I get home.
