Samsara is a bitch sometimes

Women, drugs, pleasures, desires...why are they so hard to give up? I feel everytime I try to detached myself from worldly things temptations are at their peek. You try to fast, you get offered delicious dinners. You try to stop smoking weed and suddently everyone around you has it and wants to smoke you out all the time. You ever heard the phrase " like walking on the razors edge"? Well that's exactly how i would describe it because you can fall off VERY easily if not careful. The path is not for the weak as I have learned. It is for the warriors as it is said. In order to get through it you have to study hard with diligence to get past these "tests" as I call them. It is no easy task for some, especially for those with residual attachments. Freedom is not for everyone, actually it is, but not everyone is truly ready for it.
Can anyone relate or understand where I'm coming from?

Even the Buddha rejected ascetism... no need to give these things up entirely; just try not to become TOO attached to 'em. The Middle Way for the win.

Nobody talks you into anything, it is you who talks yourself into it. Your right in way though, my mind is easily influenced, but I am no fool, and I don't give up easily.
It is easier to say yes.

i've never been one to let peer pressure make me do anything. could be a reason i have so few friends, but i think its more to do with me not taking shit and speaking my mind, if what i say hurts you its your fault, i'm not cleaning it up or making it softer so you won't be offended.

haha. Well, I don't really see it from a linear perspective. Time is an illusion used to create casual experience. Your already that animal, right Now. Everything in creation is taking place in this one moment - It's the only place you can ever act and experience from. So looking at it like that, there is no where to go.
And just to clarify what I mean when I say "don't make it harder than it has to be", I'm expressing the idea that at times our feelings/thoughts about the action are more damaging than the action itself. Feelings like guilt are counterproductive. Intent is what matters most. IMO, If you cultivate right intent your going to ultimately end up with a more positive experience. Not putting oneself in negative situations is a form of intent. For example, I won't go out to bars with my friends three nights a week knowing I will drink heavily in those situations.

Yes, when you try to quit smoking everyone offers you cigarettes, it's a test, but when you pass the test it feels so good! I find when i pass the test my body automatically releases 'feel good' as a reward
When i say no to weed, even a small toke, i immediately consciously feel very clear headed & fresh, if i say no to a cigarette my breathing feels deeper & efficient... if you listen to your body it really rewards your mind for being strong & not over indulging.
So nothing to whine about... just pass the test
The mind is the bitch, but its your bitch not the other way round, treat it as such through moderation

The reason it's hard is that it goes against the grain of nature which is survival. To reproduce is the goal. On a personal level seeking momentary pleasure is the goal and aligns with survival. Not necessarily long term survival but surviving long enough to procreate.

IMO it's pretty sad to think of oneself as a failure because they aren't reproducing. Have you ever heard of self-actualization? Maslow put things like reproduction pretty low on the "success" scale - if such a thing exists.
I'm measuring my success on feeling joyful/loving as opposed to anxious/fearful. It's a life's work, as I'm sure you know. I think this ties in with self-actualization and the evolution of consciousness.
Measuring success strictly on physical/survival terms is nonsense. What does that matter in this transient existence?

I never said I felt a failure because I didn't reproduce Not reproducing is one of my greatest achievements and makes me quite happy.

You said "To reproduce is the goal." So you are saying happiness can be contrary to the goals of nature? Which do you consider more important?

That's right "objectively". And if you reread my post I said subjectively I know I'm a failure. That's a different subject. But I can see how you guys got the wrong impression of what I was saying.

Giving up attachments is definitely hard.
More important is to change your relationship to your everything, than to give it up altogether. though drugs and alcohol are definitely no-no's, for anybody that's thirsty for truth and freedom.
