 Good books for Buddha teachings?

I was wondering if anyone knew of some really good books on the teachings of buddha, specifically for beginners on the right path. The reason i ask is because i have a very good friend who is currently in prison, and i wanted to send him some books to keep his mind busy and to keep his heart intact. I was thinking of sending him some Ramana Maharshi, but i figured it would be too difficult for him to understand. I am quite familiar with buddha and i find his teachings very helpful and easy to grasp, but many of the teachings i have read are riddled and i think require at least some prior knowledge or experience in the matter. I have looked on amazon and found this one interesting:

anyone ever read it?
He is very open to new ideas, and thats a good start. 
btw feel free to recommend any other good books that you found entertaining. I appreciate the help.

I enjoy books on zen buddhism quite a bit. Anything by Suzuki Roshi or Philip Kapleau is an excellent read in my opinion.

The book is like the whole grail of badass spiritual quotes heres some examples:

they all got good stuff in em, when in doubt read them all.
The library got em for free, you can get library books on the
computer too.

The Dhammapada is a great text on the teachings of the Buddha. Perhaps you could send a beginners meditation book, I am sure he has the time, and learning to meditate could take away some of the strain of being behind bars (it did for me)

Look up Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
and get this
im almost done reading it but will keep reading it for a direction in my meditations.
this book further elaborates upon the last. both really good.

The best resources are on the internet, some books are good but most are full of commentaries by the author not direct teachings of Gautama
This site is fantastic, id guess if you have an ipad or something its just as good as having a book

Since you suggest UG Krishnamurti i recommend the other Krishnamurti (Jiddu Krishnamurti) as well.
I have his book Freedom from the Known its super understandable
