 How do I root an Aloe Vera cutting?

I tried rooting two 6" cuttings with no success. I let the cuttings heal for 10 days and then stuck them in cactus soil/dirt mix. Watered a bit every 3 days. The cuttings just rot away =/
What's a proper way of rooting aloe vera cuttings?

i've sucessfully rooted aloe vera branches, 8 nodes aprox.
cut, let heal, stick in soil in the garden and let it root without watering, rain should be enough for it. it'll dry out a bit first then put out roots.
they're pretty hard to kill with no enough water, let it in dry soil for longer.

i usually root them by the cluster instead of by the leaf. what i mean by cluster is to dig up a little cluster of leaves that is conjoined by a center stem... which has roots at the bottom. i just take one of these and put it in the soil and in no time it roots pretty easy. ive never had any success just taking one long leaf cutting and planting it tho. it might be able to be dun tho, i dunno. br seems tot have better luck than us two
just keep trying it out man, youl get one eventually. those aloes are pretty resiliant once they get going. i love growing them. g'luck stranger

I tried rooting a jade leaf (not aloe I know...) but could not get the damn thing to root.
It's cold right now so I had it shallow in some dirt with a heatpad and after three weeks still no roots. What gives?

I root jade in water, it thrives in it long term in it also.

Aloe leaves won't strike roots, not sure if you're doing it this way as you weren't clear in your OP.
You will want to follow Lipa Kreepa's advice and dig up an offshoot and root that. Just don't water until you know it has roots.

Like you say, it's cold and is likely dormant/growing slowly. It'll root in time, (I found a month and a half roughly) and then send up some shoots. I propagated at least a hundred last Spring using leaf cuttings for market stalls.

So a leaf cutting won't root? Damn you google!!! Every where I've read suggested that a 6" cutting should root.
So by offshoot do you mean a smaller cluster growing right off the main plant? Do I need to cut it off or just dig deep enough and it breaks off?

Well I have never seen them done this way, only by division. I should of added "as far as I know" after what I typed.
They could root, I'm not entirely sure.
Leaf cuttings work best when you take the cutting as close to the stem as possible. Sometimes it's best to just rip the leaf off the plant by pulling downwards taking some of the stem epidermis with it.

i'm taking cuttings with the stem attached. if the plant is reaching for light it'll elongate a little and you're able to cut the stem.
i also think aloe won't root leaves.
i found pereskiopsis roots from leaves VERY prolifically, perhaps a good way to make a huge collection from a small number of plants.(i have more than i can handle already, about 200+ plants)

So if I was to dig up and cut an offshoot, would I still need to let it heal for 10 days? Or do I just stick it in dry soil?

Yeah. Best practice is to let the cut heal for a few days until it has dried.

So I'm hoping I did this right. I cut off one of the offshoots. They were all so tightly close to the main stem, this is the best I was able to do.
Here is the cutting
Is this enough stem to strike roots?

Just to be clear...do I stick the cutting into completely dry soil? How long should I let it sit in dry soil before watering? And once I water it, how often should I water it?

some people like to root in completely dry soil, while i prefer to use a slightly moist soil. i like to keep it just a tad bit wet, tho only if its a well draining soil mix to begin with. never let the soil become soggy or keep watering it, day after day. i just like to keep it moist, and not water it too too much. otherwise youl promote rot.
keep outta light. not in the darkness but certainlynot in the sunlight. put it in the corner of the yard which is pretty well shaded, until u see some growth (if u can do this anyway, depending on where u planted the cuttings), then gradually introduce it to sunlight a little bit more andmore as the days go by.
that cutting looks great and u should def get something going there. good luck to u, keep us posted for sure. im actaully moving some of my aloe pups today to another spot of the yard, hopefully theyll do nicely. i luv aloe
