CNN Reports Massive Brown Dwarf Lurking In Our Solar System

It has begun.....
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/02/15/scientists-telescope-hunt-massive-hidden-object-in-space/?hpt=C2 You know how you sometimes can sense that something is present even though you can't see it? Well, astronomers are getting that feeling about a giant, hidden object in space.
And when we say giant, we mean GIANT.
Evidence is mounting that either a brown dwarf star or a gas giant planet is lurking at the outermost reaches of our solar system, far beyond Pluto. The theoretical object, dubbed Tyche, is estimated to be four times the size of Jupiter and 15,000 times farther from the sun than Earth, according to a story in the British paper The Independent.
Astrophysicists John Matese and Daniel Whitmire from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette think data from NASA's infrared space telescope WISE will confirm Tyche's existence and location within two years.
The presence of such a massive object in the solar system's far-flung Oort Cloud could explain a barrage of comets from an unexpected direction, according to a December article at Space.com.
Its 27 million-year orbit could also explain a pattern of mass extinctions on Earth, scientists say.
Brown dwarfs are cold "failed" stars; their dimness and lack of heat radiation can make them hard to detect. Gas giants are huge planets – like Saturn, Jupiter and Neptune – that are made up of gases and may lack a solid surface like Earth's.
Whitmire told The Independent that Tyche will probably be composed of hydrogen and helium and have colorful spots, bands and clouds like Jupiter.
"You'd also expect it to have moons," he said. "All the outer planets have them."
Tyche was first hypothesized in 1984 as Nemesis, a dark companion star to the sun. It's been the subject of astronomical research and debate ever since. In July, another Space.com article said the celestial evidence suggests Tyche could not possibly exist.
To distinguish it from the Nemesis star theory, Matese and Whitmire are calling their object Tyche, after the good sister of the goddess Nemesis in Greek mythology.

Tycus(movie 2000)
When photographer Jake Lowe gets gets a cryptic message from an old friend, he follows its instructions leading him to a remote research station in the Sierra mountains. After doing some snooping around, he learns a terrible secret: a giant comet will be passing next to the Earth, unleashing earthquakes, volcanoes, meteor strikes and other natural disasters that will destroy the world as we know it. Somehow, Lowe must get the word out and warn people of the coming catastrophe, but even if he succeeds, will it make any difference?

i hate it when the news connects every possible space phenomenon with a mass extinction...
butttt.... its pretty cool to think about, and imagine seeing the thing from earth (depending on how close the orbit comes)

Awwww shiiiiet. They make it sounds so creepy with "lurking". It's not like this means anything if it has been their the entire time. They should have just written "Lurking, encroaching on our planet, a monstrosity four times the size of jupiter preys on our solar system, causing the demise of entire species, shooting comets our way that could mean the end of life, all while the invisible giant kills undetected. A cold, heartless, faceless star throws off our orbit from the dark reaches of our solar system, waiting to swallow us whole."
That brown giant ain't no thing, bitch's even too afraid to show up cause that bitch knows it better back the fuck up off our solar system.
But seriously, that's really cool that we're discovering things in our own solar system that we didn't even know about.

http://mblogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/02/14/no-theres-no-proof-of-a-giant-planet-in-the-outer-solar-system/
Quote:
I’m getting a lot of email and tweets about NASA supposedly having proof of a giant, Jupiter-sized planet orbiting the Sun way beyond Pluto. Let me be clear: while certainly possible, this idea is not at all proven, and in my opinion still pretty unlikely. As usual, this started as a more-or-less accurate media story and is getting inflated as it gets re-reported. As far as I can tell, the original report was in the UK paper The Independent.
Here’s the deal. Two astronomers, John Matese and Dan Whitmire, have theorized about the possibility of a previously-undiscovered planet way beyond Pluto for some time. This is not a crazy idea; we see planets orbiting other stars way out, and there’s other evidence big planets can be pretty far out from the Sun (mind you, evidence does not mean proof). As it happens, there are lots of chunks of ice orbiting the Sun pretty far out as well. Some of these have orbits which bring them into the inner solar system, and we seem them as long-period comets.
What Matese and Whitmire did was wonder how a big planet would affect the orbits of these comets. If you measured enough of them, would you see the effects of the gravity of this planet? They claim you can, and even gave the planet a tentative name: Tyche.
I read their papers, and thought the data were interesting but unconvincing. The sample size was too small. A bigger study was done, but again the effects weren’t quite enough to rise to the level of breakthrough. I’m not saying the astronomers are wrong — the data were certainly provocative, and potentially correct! Just not firm enough.
What I want to see are observations of this planet. And our best hope may be in the NASA satellite WISE — the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, which has scanned the entire sky over the past year or so. A planet in the outer solar system may be warm enough to glow in the IR and be spotted in the WISE data.
The article in The Independent talks about this, saying:
But scientists now believe the proof of its existence has already been gathered by a Nasa space telescope, Wise, and is just waiting to be analysed.
The first tranche of data is to be released in April, and astrophysicists John Matese and Daniel Whitmire from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette think it will reveal Tyche within two years. "If it does, John and I will be doing cartwheels," Professor Whitmire said. "And that’s not easy at our age."
Note that first line: it makes it seem as if the proof of the planet is already in the data. We just need to find it!
But that’s not really the case. This planet may not exist at all. It might, and I’d love for that to be true. But at the moment we just have interesting but inconclusive evidence supporting the idea of a large planet in the deep dark recesses of the solar system. That’s a long way from proof.
I’ll note the popular site Gizmodo has an article on this that starts off well, but then goes even farther than the Independent did: "[Matese and Whitmire] claim that data already captured by NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer proves its existence. It only needs to be analyzed… over the next two years".
The Independent said that the astronomers believe the proof is there, but that’s different than actually claiming it’s there. I think the article in The Independent is fairly well-measured, but Gizmodo took it a bit too far. And in either case, I’m quite sure that lay people reading these articles will walk away thinking the planet’s reality is a given.
But at this point, we don’t know. And it’s possible that the planet exists and WISE won’t see it; it may be too dim to spot. There are many variations here. Basically it boils down to only one statement that can be said with certainty: if WISE sees it, it exists. But if it’s not seen in the WISE data, that doesn’t prove anything one way or another; it narrows the possibilities down and gives us an upper limit on how big, distant, and warm the planet might be. But we’d need to keep looking for it.
There’s been a spate of overblown stories dealing with astronomy lately (see Related Posts, below). I think this is a coincidence, but it’s certainly keeping me busy. And I’m still not done yet. Stay tuned.

i just doubt it will happen ive got a lot of problems and i cant really see why someone else would want to put up with them.
i dont wanna hijack the brown dwarf thread anymore tho. my sorrows are well documented and unwanted round here.

Well, it's pretty damn interesting, but we just don't have enough information to make it anything more concrete, let alone any possible implications.

awesome find RP!
Science 938,579,834,698.3 Religion 0
very interesting about how this could explain the possible asteroid or comets hitting earth, becuase when i used to think about it, i would wonder exactly an asteroid put hit earth without being thrown off by all the other celestial bodies gravitation forces, but if this one plant is way out there and only comes around once in a purple moon, i could see how over the eon's of our solar systems existence this could happen.
idk im so high that prolly didnt make sense

Brown dwarfs are cold "failed" stars; their dimness and lack of heat radiation can make them hard to detect.
Lets put the blame where it belongs. Nemesis/Niburu/Tyche isn't a "failed star", the astronomers failed to detect it.
If you have an object that big in the Oort cloud, it will have a ton of moons, moons that may well become our furtherst natural outposts before we go star-hopping. Moons that will become a lot more interesting in a few billion years when the sun goes red Dwarf on us and we need a place to go.
Depending on the advance of technology we might park Earth in an orbit around it. If it has a nice enough energy output we might put a Dyson sphere around it and use it as a battery for hundreds of billions of years to come, after the sun long since has gone.
If an offspin of our civilization makes it for many billions of years, the Era of Stars will draw to a close, and exploiting brown dwarves as a power source would power civilization for hundreds of millions of years after the galaxioes faded from the sky.

dude i ddint even think about that!
fuck that would be crazy, put an expeditionary colony on one the moons on the planet, have them drift off into the abyss (hundreds if not thousands of years in the future, when technology is better)..
thatt would be fucking insane.. what if its tug on earth throws earth off orbit? even moving us back or forrward a tiny amount would fuck with the earth pretty gnar gnar.

Picture this awesomeness of extreme engineering:
1..take a brown dwarf star 2..build a hollow sphere around it with a hole on one side. 3..build a VAST civilization on the outer surface on the sphere, fueled by the brown dwarf's energy. 4..because of the hole, the brown dwarf/sphere assembly will function as a rocket that has a burn time of hundreds of billions of years. You can steer it by repositioning the sphere's hole, which is the exhaust, and stop it by inverting direction, then closing the hole, and collecting the extra energy. 5..with some of the energy, atoms can be harvested from the interstellar (or intergalactic) medium which you can use to build stuff etc, among them Deuterium and Helium-3 which you can introduce into the brown Dwarf, extending its service life well beyond its natural lifespan 6..enjoy space travel all over the galaxy if not intergalactic space travel for trillions of years, with a civilisation of lets say a hundred billion, stopping occasionally to convert other Brown Dwarves (the most common star of the universe) to similar nomadic civilisations.
Is that epic or wut?

Slavaslave is correct.
Gravity is one of the weaker forces acting in the universe. Of the four fundamental forces in the universe: electromagnetism, strong interaction, weak interaction, and gravitation, gravity is the weakest of the four.

The other day I was driving home around 11:40 am, and it was one of those days where you can still see the moon in the sky.
I was thinking about how incredible it would be to just see a planet pass us by and not be effected by it at all. In reality though, it would definitely fuck with earths homeostasis a little bit,

well consider the diagram (which is what my first point was based off of) if this large object were to come as close as Jupiter, it would pull about 4x as much as Jupiter does on the earth (simplification), and as far as i know, the pull of gravity on earth from Jupiter is fuck-all, so it wont cause any problems...
i dont doubt the effect of large bodies on space/time, im just saying it only works in close proximity (relative of course)

Though gravity is the strongest of the four forces, over astronomical distances it is the strongest. That is because the nuclear forces act only over a short range, and the electromagnetic force gets 'screened' by having positive and negative charges which cancel each other out. In the end, what we are left with is gravity being the dominate force over astronomical distances.

I'm sure there would be some implications of this being real, but how would it be that big of a deal immediately? It's not like the fucking thing just showed up yesterday, it's been here for a long fucking time. We've never noticed it so us being aware of it isn't going to just make the world explode or anything.

The term "lurking" is weird, though. I don't think it mean it's been in one spot the whole time.
I the way I interpreted it, is that it's just now coming close enough in it's orbit that they're beginning to pick it up on their instruments.
I may be wrong, though.

I dont understand why we cant get a definitive answer. I mean, christ the ancients especially the mayans, knew a great deal about the solar system. with all of our technology we cant get a straight answer?

Brown Dwarves last so very long (hundreds of billions of years to about a trillion years) because they don't fuse light hydrogen (protium) but rather only heavy hydrogen (Deuterium) and light helium (Helium-3). They do this at a trickle, so that gravity fluctuations won't really be an issue.
Lets say we have us a beauty of 15 Jupiter Masses. This one will burn off just about all of its Deuterium.
How much is that?
The natural abundance of Deuterium in Jupiter is about 0.03% of its mass. Our little gem of the example would be 15 Jupiter masses, so that would make the Deuterium weight contained 0.45% of a Jupiter mass. Now Jupiter happens to weigh 1.8986×1027 kg so that would mean that the amount of fusion fuel present would be equal to about 1.43x the weight of the entire planet Earth - and this of a fusion fuel with such energy density that 200 grams, just 7 ounces, holds as much energy as a million liters of oil - 5,000 barrels. And remember: we have 8.5 x 1021 tons of that stuff burning off for free!
Now lets pull a figure out of the big hat to make a very conservative estimate of mean energy release. Lets say our little gem will burn for a trillion years (1012Y), it will probably be shorter but never mind
Lets pour this into easier numbers. Mean energy output of our lil gem would be 8.5 billion tons of Deuterium per year. Lets assume an energy efficiency thats crap, comparable to cheap solar panels of today, and that we can capture only 1 billion tons of that annually.
Thats still a lot At 25 million barrels of oil per ton, we're still looking at an annual availability of energy of 25 trillion barrels of oil per year.
Our nomadic dyson sphere has lets say a hundred billion inhabitants, so there's the availability of the usable energy of 250 barrels of oil, per inhabitant, per year. Now this is mean energy, mind you, in the worst case scenario. In the same scenario, during the first 100 billion years or so, you'd easily get 2,500 barrels of oil per inhabitant. That allows for pretty awesome living. Cut back the population to 10 billion and its obviously 25,000 barrels, per person, per head.
And think of it, you won't be in a small cramped space shuttle. You'd have forests the size of continents where all the species of the earth will roam, species alive then, species brought back from extinction and species pulled out of a possible future by genetic engineering.
When a new suitable brown Dwarf is found, its capped by another dyson sphere, part of the population jumps on board and they make a vote: "Will we go our separate way, or will we join the large fleet of nomadic dyson sphere civilizations that roam the milky way galaxy together?"
Each of the nomads will speciate into an alien planet. If you travel between dyson spheres you will end up on entirely different planets, alien to each other except for their origin and method of propulsion.
Tell me thats not a completely awesome way to spend the next trillions of years.
Once the stars burn out, we can refuel our brown Dwarf by visiting burnt out solar systems, taking our brown dwarf star out of the sphere, letting it merge with Jupiter sized gas giants to refuel them, build a new sphere around them and continue our epic adventure for many billions of years more before the next refueling.

Gravity. A properly positioned Dyson Sphere will center the sphere around it and will center itself in the middle of the sphere. Solar wind too would have a centralizing effect.

I'm not sure you could stabilize a Dyson sphere with gravity, but it wouldn't be hard to shoot electrons down the gravity well and then stabilize electrostacticly. Better to use magnetic monopoles though.

lol wut?
I agree though, I dont think you could stabilize with gravity. But in a case where you arn't 'flying' the thing around the galaxy, I suspect you could actively stabilize it using some type of thrust. But in the case where you are flying it around, you would need thrust equal to the solar wind going out of the hole to stabilize it. Otherwise, the sphere would get accelerated opposite of the star and they would crash into each other.

Set up an electron gun, shoot electrons down into the star. At the same time, charge the shell with electrons. Like charges repel, the sphere and the star will not touch. Using magnetic monopoles would have the same effect, but be about 100x cooler because it's magnets.
Can't do it with a ringworld, any axial instability will self-amplify and the star would pop out like a watermelon seed.

Well, there are no magnetic monopoles... Im not sure what you mean there. Magnetic fields cant exert a force in the same manner as electric fields either.
Charging the star and shell oppositely doesn't seem like it would work to me either. I suspect it would be harmful to life to exist in/on the shell with such a massive electrostatic charge. You might ionize some of your own atoms!lol Such a large charge would be in danger of arcing to, and to prevent that what would you do? Space is easy to arc across, so you would need to fill the space in between your sphere and the sun with some dielectric material... It would be a fun and relatively easy exercise to calculate these things to get a better idea of what they might do.
I think that using some type of thrust on the shell to slow it down would be the best idea. Then the star of course gets trusted around by virtue of its solar wind and the hole.

Its worse than that actually. A spherical shell cannot exert force inside the shell. That is, if you are inside the shell - you will feel no gravity from the shell. If you are a charged particle inside the shell - you will feel no electric force from the shell. I doesnt matter how big of a gravitational or electric field you make, it doesnt exert a force within a spherical shell.

Really? Makes sense I suppose. So you have to spin-stabilize the sphere, and that provides simulated gravity around the inside of the sphere. but it lessens as you move up in latitude, dropping to zero at the poles?
Fascinating. You could have low-g recreation, farming, retirement homes, etc.

But if you spin the sphere, then you cant put around the galaxy using a hole cut out of it. Unless you put the hole at the pole, but then you have the same stability issue. Wiccan originally mentioned living on the outside of the sphere, and presumably using gravity rather than circular motion to stay on it.

Oh, because you have to move the star as well... which gets us back to magnets. Instead of an even charge, what about eight evenly spaced magnetic concentrations?

Magnetic fields dont work like electric fields though. They only exert force on moving charges, so unless you have some fast moving charge in the setup no force will be exerted at all. Furthermore, magnetic forces only act at right angles to the moving charges, which complicates things even more. At the moment I cant envision how magnetic fields could stabilize the set up at all.
You would probably want to spin the thing, and thrust at the pole. The spinning would stabilize it in the direction of motion, but the sphere would still move faster than the star. Without physically tethering the star to the sphere, again, I think one would have actively thrust the sphere backward to that it doest overtake the star. Maybe you would have enough energy to have little ion thrusters all around the sphere keeping it from overtaking the star.
edit - I actually briefly met Dyson a year ago. He didnt talk about Dyson spheres though, too bad.

Maybe you could brake the sphere against interstellar background material. Magnets again, but electromagnets. Like a Bussard scoop, but just for braking.
(The collected material isn't enough to power a fusion rocket, like Bussard envisioned. But it's good usable stuff, you don't have to throw it away. You can feed it to the star, or have local fusion plants in the sphere or whatever.)

There's a line between caution and cowardice. A dyson sphere is a huge asset, you'd want to handle it wisely. Switching authors, you should start selecting for long-lived individuals, and eventually have the setup managed by wise elders with hundreds of years of experience.

What if you don't steer it? It's going to take a long time to get anywhere anyway, many many generations. So then why not launch the star on the trajectory you want, and go build your sphere around it?
When you get to your destination, a separate party can capture a local star and begin the process again, aiming for a new destination or a return trip. So your population halves, and suddenly your sphere is roomy again.

We should start a thread over in the Science forum, and leave this poor threadjack victim in peace.

After thinking about this a little more, I realize the idea is a little harder than originally thought. Before actually writing it out, I assumed that the sphere would overtake the star as they moved along. But the star would actually move the opposite direction as the sphere! Inevitably crashing into it. This effect depends on how reflective or absorptive the shell is. If it reflects, the star will get pushed back with nearly half of the momentum the shell gets. If it absorbs, the star will stay nearly still.
Im gonna think about this some more. A tether would certainly work, but how are you gonna tether to a fluid surface? Stabilizing with thrusters seems out of the question with this scheme.
