Really? Makes sense I suppose. So you have to spin-stabilize the sphere, and that provides simulated gravity around the inside of the sphere. but it lessens as you move up in latitude, dropping to zero at the poles?
Fascinating. You could have low-g recreation, farming, retirement homes, etc.

But if you spin the sphere, then you cant put around the galaxy using a hole cut out of it. Unless you put the hole at the pole, but then you have the same stability issue. Wiccan originally mentioned living on the outside of the sphere, and presumably using gravity rather than circular motion to stay on it.

Why can't the jet come out of the pole, with the spin around it, like a football?
Oh, because you have to move the star as well... which gets us back to magnets. Instead of an even charge, what about eight evenly spaced magnetic concentrations?

Hey, if you were going to build a Dyson sphere- Would you use your star? Or go get another star? Or start with a sub-stellar mass, a big Jupiter-size mass, then feed it just enough hydrogen to get ignition?

Magnetic fields dont work like electric fields though. They only exert force on moving charges, so unless you have some fast moving charge in the setup no force will be exerted at all. Furthermore, magnetic forces only act at right angles to the moving charges, which complicates things even more. At the moment I cant envision how magnetic fields could stabilize the set up at all.
You would probably want to spin the thing, and thrust at the pole. The spinning would stabilize it in the direction of motion, but the sphere would still move faster than the star. Without physically tethering the star to the sphere, again, I think one would have actively thrust the sphere backward to that it doest overtake the star. Maybe you would have enough energy to have little ion thrusters all around the sphere keeping it from overtaking the star.
edit - I actually briefly met Dyson a year ago. He didnt talk about Dyson spheres though, too bad.

Maybe you could brake the sphere against interstellar background material. Magnets again, but electromagnets. Like a Bussard scoop, but just for braking.
(The collected material isn't enough to power a fusion rocket, like Bussard envisioned. But it's good usable stuff, you don't have to throw it away. You can feed it to the star, or have local fusion plants in the sphere or whatever.)

Hey, random thought. If I had a dyson sphere, I don't know if I'd want to be a galactic tourist. I think moving up out of the galactic disc and keeping quiet might be the best way to stay safe and keep my sphere.

Sounds like a Puppeteer Moving out of the galactic plane would be smart, whether or not you are touring the galaxy.

There's a line between caution and cowardice. A dyson sphere is a huge asset, you'd want to handle it wisely. Switching authors, you should start selecting for long-lived individuals, and eventually have the setup managed by wise elders with hundreds of years of experience.

I don't think the dwarf would be as much of an issue as the satellites orbiting it. Such a large mass would attract many satellites. Anyone of them which could mercilessly crash into us.

What if you don't steer it? It's going to take a long time to get anywhere anyway, many many generations. So then why not launch the star on the trajectory you want, and go build your sphere around it?
When you get to your destination, a separate party can capture a local star and begin the process again, aiming for a new destination or a return trip. So your population halves, and suddenly your sphere is roomy again.

After thinking about this a little more, I realize the idea is a little harder than originally thought. Before actually writing it out, I assumed that the sphere would overtake the star as they moved along. But the star would actually move the opposite direction as the sphere! Inevitably crashing into it. This effect depends on how reflective or absorptive the shell is. If it reflects, the star will get pushed back with nearly half of the momentum the shell gets. If it absorbs, the star will stay nearly still.
Im gonna think about this some more. A tether would certainly work, but how are you gonna tether to a fluid surface? Stabilizing with thrusters seems out of the question with this scheme.
