The game of Mafia: a psychological experiment 6

I'll make him an offer he can't refuse....If you haven't heard of the fairly popular party game Mafia, I'd like to propose we play an online version of it. It involves deception, bluffing, social bonding, manipulation and insight into human nature, and requires nothing more than a commitment to post daily and the ability to send private messages. Once the game is complete we can discuss its psychological and sociological implications, which should prove to be a fairly fruitful topic. The Rules:I will be the moderator of the game, otherwise known as God. The game requires at least around 10 people excluding me to play: preferably 12 or more. The players will be divided into 4 categories: Townsmen, Mafioso, Guardian Angels, and Detectives. The goal of the Townsmen, Guardian Angels and Detectives is to root out the Mafioso; the goal of the Mafioso is to kill off everyone else. The game is played in a series of rounds, where each round is comprised of a day and a night. During the night, the Mafioso consult each other via PM and decide who they want to kill, sending this information to me (God). The Guardian Angels then can pick one person (consulting each other via PM to decide who) to save from a Mafioso hit by messaging God with their decision. This can include themselves. Finally, the Detectives pick one person after consultation via PM with each other for investigation as to their status; querying God via PM will let them know whether the person they selected is a Mafioso or a regular Townsman (which includes being a Guardian Angel or Detective). When all this is complete, the next day dawns. During the day, the happenings of last night are let known: who got shot/stabbed/thrown to the fishies with a cement block around their shoes. The members of the town (including the undercover Mafioso) then assemble at a town meeting to vote on who might be a Mafioso: in other words, free posting in this thread commences. Anyone can nominate anyone else by explicitly saying "I nominate So-and-So" and giving their reason for suspecting that said person is a Mafioso, all in one post. Once a reason for nomination and a second have been made, the accused may give a defense consisting of a single post. Following this the town as a whole must vote on whether or not to lynch the accused by posting either "Yay" or "Nay" followed by each member's reasoning: in the case of the majority being in favor of lynching the accused is hanged until dead and his or her identity is divulged to the public. Once you're dead, you may no longer talk to others by posting in the thread or PMing people who are still alive and playing! Obviously there is no way to enforce this but for the enjoyment of all involved please refrain from doing so. If the first nomination thus proposed has been successful and a town member has been lynched, night falls and a new round begins. If either a tie is reached or only a minority supports the lynching, the nomination has failed and conversation in the thread may begin anew until another nomination is given. This can be the same person who was nominated before; it doesn't matter. Also, a majority vote can be given to let night fall even if no one has been lynched yet. The game is won by the Townsmen if they successfully lynch all the Mafioso; the game is won by the Mafioso if at least one of their party survives until the end of the game. Strategies:Townsmen: This is harder to accomplish online than it is in person, but on the whole look out for deception: the Mafioso by their very nature and goals will be trying to misdirect the town during the lynch meetings in order to cast suspicion on anyone but themselves. Also if you feel like you might get killed during the next night you can try to ask a Guardian Angel to save you. Guardian Angels: Yes, you can simply decide to save yourself each round, but this is probably not helpful for your Townsmen on the whole. Look around each round to see who probably will get axed by the Mafioso and try to save them. Also try to save the Detectives if you can; they're one of your best chances for finding out who the Mafioso are. Detectives: Your goal is obviously to discover who the Mafioso are and somehow communicate your knowledge to the group at large WITHOUT letting the Mafioso know that you're a Detective. Good luck. Mafioso: Take out the Guardian Angels and Detectives first, if you can. Sometimes if the town suspects collaboration between two or more Mafioso it may be wise to sacrifice one of your team during the night to avert detection. Initial Logistics:If you're interested at all in playing, please post in this thread telling me your availability. Ideally I'll be able to log on to the forums at least twice a day; we will try to have one Day and one Night comprising one round in total per real-life day. Let the games (and back-stabbings) begin. lol sounds fun
but what exactly do the detectives do if a majority is required for conviction? Persuade to lynch?

Sure.

Exactly, but it's tricky because letting the group know you're a Detective almost certainly implies the Mafioso will try to kill you each night. And if the Guardian Angels realizing this select you to be saved each night, the Mafioso has free reign to pick OTHER people during the night to be slaughtered without fear of being blocked by divine intervention. As you can see subterfuge and deception are HUGE parts of the game.

If we get enough people I think the mafioso needs to be broken into two teams so they can kill each other.

That'd certainly make for an interesting variation.

No worries man, it's pretty simple once you actually start playing.
