Yes, It Is time for Pot Legalization, Mr. President
February 1, 2011 - Huffington Post
By Gary Johnson, Former governor of New Mexico and possible 2012 Presidential candidate

The Web is humming with stories and discussion from the aftermath of President Obama's response to questions about drug legalization during last Thursday's YouTube forum. While his words this time around are a bit more encouraging than previous signals from the administration, I would strongly suggest that we all, including the president, cut through the platitudes and get to the truth about marijuana prohibition.

If, as the president suggests, it is time for a "serious debate" about legalization, let's get to it, starting with a few questions that beg for truth:

Why, with record federal deficits and states teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, are we spending billions on yet another failed Prohibition that is accomplishing nothing other than making criminals out of millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens and fueling drug cartels that threaten our fundamental national security? Is it not time to try something different?

Despite lip-service, about the need for treatment, harm-reduction and other strategies to address drug use as a health issue, why do the federal government's actual policies and budget still treat the situation as almost entirely a law enforcement problem? Let's end the unworkable marijuana prohibition and put our money where our mouth is. Let's solve the problems like border crime. We can do it with pot legalization.

We need to deal with some simple truths. How do we reconcile the fact, that in a supposedly free society, it is legal for a responsible adult to purchase and consume alcohol, while purchasing and consuming marijuana is a crime? I, along with millions of other Americans, are still waiting for a credible answer to that one.

Mr. President, I would suggest the debate has already begun, thanks for joining in. The Feds have been ignoring this issue for far too long.

Obama is just being a politician, setting him self up for a second term. He said legalization is up for the debate which satisfies all the pro drug people, then he said he isn't pro drug himself (who knows if that's true or not), which satisfies all the anti drug people.
nevertheless, it's a step in the right direction.

Fuck Obama, change my ass, you admitted that you smoked weed and did blow, so why don't you go convict yourself and actually serve time for your crimes? Fuck him, it was perfectly ok for him to do it and then joke about it but to make it legal for us? That to him is completely unacceptable.

maybe he does want to legalize drugs, but he can't just come out and blantently say that. the majority of Americans are still brainwashed about drugs, and he wants a second term.

so we shouldn't complain when in reality, barely any shit has changed? complaining is what gets the word around. don't be ignorant. the more frustrated people are with this the more likely change will occur

Really like prop 19 even being on the ballot last year, Obama ending the medical despinsery raids? Change is happening and it's not because kids are bitching on the Internet.

and how much other things did obama change?

really he hasnt changed anything. he just wants to look like he changed shit . but everyone knows

if there was change, youd be able to medicate yourself ( grow opium, pot , whatever ) Drug legalization and end the fucked up monetary system and all the monopolizes in the world

oh btw im glad prop 19 didnt pass it was just a way for a certain few to gain  monopolizes in the marijuana buisness and it wouldnt allow patients( of medical marijuana) to use at age 18, and wouldnt allow fellow patients to share pot the list goes on and on

You guys act like a President has what ever power they want.  Seriously, if you listen to some of the smart responses in this thread, there are practical reasons why Obama can't do what ever he wants.  Have you guys heard the term "lame duck congress", and have you heard that other individuals (such as republicans) have the power to vote stuff down?  There are actually other ppl out there who have power over what happens in the US not just Obama.

Aside for that, people bitching on the internet forced the question of legalizing all drugs onto Obama and got him to say it is a legitimate issue of debate.

Obama speaks progressively but in action he doesn't do much  with drug policy his administration is pretentious as fuck.  Its the 21st century, he could probably propose decriminalization if he wanted to.
