I found an old home DVD and would like to pull the footage off it onto my computer and save as a file...

how can I do that?

If it's home made, then you can probably copy the files directly from the CD to your hard drive.

If it has protection, you'll need some DVD ripping software. A quick Google search should bring you some option.

For a home made DVD, simply create a folder with the name of the DVD, then copy the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders across.  The AUDIO_TS folder is part of the DVD Audio Specification which is no longer used and is generally empty; however, many (older) hardware players still expect the folder to be there as required by the specification.  The actual audio for the video is stored with the video object files (VOB) in the VIDEO_TS folder.

FairUse has worked great for me despite being a shady looking Chinese company.  I had to copy DVDs onto my computer using that cause I couldn't get Handbreak to do it.

Which leads into my question.

Hey Seuss, I have a bunch of movies I copied onto by computer using ISOBuster and it gave me the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders like you said are on DVDs.  Unfortunately I can't get handbrake to make those files into the format I want them (CLI never loads) and I'm wondering if there is any other way to get those to an AVI format.

You might try mencoder or VCL.

I use the cole2k packages because it has everything I need
You can get away with just two programs though and they can be downloaded on their own:
DVDshrink(http://www.dvdshrink.org/)
DVD2AVI(http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Rip-Other-Tools/DVDAVI.shtml)

DVDshrink will copy the dvd to your harddrive. Then you use dvd2avi to change it from a dvd readable format into an avi movie file that can be played on your computer.

I found this site to be informative: http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm

Oh, also. I've never tried handbrake to rip from dvd's directly, but it apparently supports that. It would be a much simpler interface to use and less hassle for you. It's closer to a one-click-and-it-works thing. It'll save as mp4 or mkv formats.

Yeah ,Handbreak should do that, my problem is most likely only my problem.

I don't even get an error with handbreak, I'll configure it to rip the DVD the way I want and make it start, then it would say loading CLI or something and then never complete that task.  One time I let it go all night while I was sleeping and woke up in the morning to "loading CLI".  That's when I gave up and found FairUse, and that works great for what I want, but handbreak is more robust and can do a lot more.  I'm using FairUse to directly convert a DVD to AVI while handbreak can convert anything.
