Having been to minibar and having worked for andres, I can tell you that minibar is basically regurgitated El Bulli. Not saying it isn't good, but for those that have no clue as to food trends and chefs those are the people that they target and like to "wow". Not much originality if you are into El Bulli, it will all seem too familiar. Eating there once was enough. And if you are going to go, I would wait until they do their renovation. They will be making the entire upstairs of Cafe Atlantico one big minibar.
I'd say try Oval Room, Cityzen, Komi or Palena. Palena especially is in my opinion the best food being cooked by the best chef in DC (Frank Ruta).

He's really been making a name for himself. Supposed to be really bold flavored food.
you're talking about that burger joint arent you, well lemme say, first night I was in a rush, hit the hard rock, spent $20 on salmon and $18 on a veggie burger for my friend and regular burger for my brother, salmon was pretty good, friend said "best fookin' veggie burger evar!" brother said "meh"... a couple of days in we hit Flip, I was expecting a $20 burger (we actually have a place out here in the styx trying to sell $15 burgers), friend said "best fookin' veggie burger evar!", I got the veal burger and ordered a farmer burger to go for my brother...
I was really impressed because the burgers were not insanely priced, I think our total on the check was about $60-$65 for the 3 burgers and some extras, and a couple of drinks, friend had to have more tomatoes, then more... but more so the food was well done, I'm not a big fan of burgers but these were not the rocks I'm used to seeing in some places

I'm not a serious foodie, could give a shit about the chef or the trends, I like good food, flavors, textures and even atmosphere, I'm the guy that walks into the high end establishment in work clothes, concrete sludge all over my cloths, rubber boots a crap all in my hair, my friend on the other hand is a gordon ramsay on crack, at jalapeno charlies and fire of brazil he stayed on the staff...
"taste this, this doenst taste burnt to you, it's a fucking corn chip, how do you fuck up a corn chip, when's the last time you changed the oil in the fryers" "jesus, it's a fucking burrito and it tastes like wallpaper paste, trust me, I know wallpaper paste when I'm eating it, did your decorator do the walls with my burrito?"

Well Im not that into restaurants so anything approaching El Bulli sounds pretty enticing to me. That said Ive never heard of Palena, Ill investigate that. I wanted to go to Komi, and Bistro la Bonne on U Street (not really in the same class as the other restaurants talked about here) with a girlfriend but we broke up a month ago so I haven't bothered.

I can land it in the sense that I can call them up and see what they have available.

not bad menu prices
http://www.palenarestaurant.com/Menus/DiningRoomMenu.pdf
for that caliber.
Any place that's offering a tasting dinner for under $90 is pretty reasonable to me.

it's a shame Blais closed his fine dining establishment. Seems like it's a tough sell down in the ATL.

you simply cant get away with selling a scallop with a couple bits of crab meat and sauce in atlanta even if you do line up a spoonful of beans and top it with a few weeds you picked on the way to work

It's the top 3 best restaurants in the city bar none. DEFINITELY WORTH IT!
Another good place is Obelisk (peter pastan) Only tasting menu for dinner, but sooooo good.
Yeah, as for Blais, that kind of food just isn't going to fly down in ATL, but I guess he wasn't suicidal to open that in NYC with Wylie taking that crown, one WD-50 type place even in a big city like nyc is plenty, at least here in this country. I'll tell you this though, if the Voltaggio bros never went on top chef, Volt would likely be closed by now. Frederick, MD is way out there for DC diners to go, but now they do because of top chef, although I may speak too soon and the next thing you hear is that Volt is closing.
Oh and his food looks really contrived and forced. Technique for technique's sake. I don't doubt his cooking skill but that food just screams masturbation (feeding the chef's ego)
and you need at least a month ahead reso to get a seat at minibar

Then you're not the target clientle.
Most people in this country don't even know what El Bulli or who Ferran Adria is. My point was you would need to in order to appreciate that type of food, on the other hand if you're really into that or even work in the industry at that level then none of their stuff would impress or suprise you. If you ate at Minibar you would no doubt complain about the price to food ratio and the small portions, you won't leave there full by any means.

it saddens me how hard it is for talented passionate people to sustain businesses like this.
I wasn't too big on Voltaggio's food. He had a couple really nice dishes. But yeah the food was pretty contrived. All of the presentations were compact and intricate. Flavoring was pretty orthodox, pedestrian at times.
I went to Langham and got the full tasting, and I really dont ever feel like going back.
Its not like the same kind of urge I have for going back to Providence or Melisse.
Last time i was in DC, ended up going to Central. Very tasty stuff. Got the frog legs, lamb shank with polenta, charcuterie mountain (the spiced terrine is tasty), and the napoleon, which is easily the finest napoleon i've ever had.

It's only hard to sustain them in this country and especially in this economic environment. People here want to see value and size over quality and creativity.
If I ever won the powerball I would open a restaurant where food cost was meaningless and every line cook was a featured chef, no food writers allowed and I would hire droves of PI's to find out the names of every Michelin inspector currently serving and have their pictures line the outside of the place with the word "banned" stamped over it. That or a place that specialized in one ingredient like mushrooms, which we would grown in house in specially made terrariums built into the walls of the dining room.
