This is really scaring the shit out of me.No joking around,ok?
My sister has an African Clawed frog(female).We know its' female because of the fact that its layed a couple clutches of infertile eggs.
The eggs would just sit in the bowl and rot until we threw them out.Well this last clutch of eggs I took out and put in a petri dish and,well you've probaly guessed,I fertilized them with my own semen. The fucking things are developing!! WTF! I don't know if I should flush them down the toilet or what. No one else at home knows about my little experiment.This is really scaring the fuck out of me! Would it be murder if I just flush them?

can that frog fertilize its own eggs... like take the semen from another frog and hold on to it? if not its rather strange how the genes could splice... maybe cause we were once amphibious? humans dont know too much about genetics and biology? wouldnt be murder, might be kind of interesting to see what happened though. i wouldnt worry about it too much, sounds kind of cool.

Ok, I never said that I was "arroused" That would be just plain sick.I did what I did in the name of science.
It just really freaks me out and it seems like everyone knows even tho theres no way they could. Like today my aunt asks me, "So (Put my name here) how many kids do you plan on having when you grow up?" I just could'nt help thinking about the six tadpoles in my closet downstairs. Are these thoughts going to come up everytime I get into a conversation about kids? And how the hell can I bass fish now using a live frog as bait?These and so many more questions come up.
I hope they like the goldfish flakes I'm feeding them,if not I'm sure I'll hear about it one of these days.

Your frogs are probably hermaphrodites. They could turn that way if you have polluted tap water in your area.
Hybridization is not a possibility.
The most far-out thing I could think of was that the presence of sperm tricked the eggs into cloning themselves- all the frogs will be female, and copies of the mother.
I think the African Clawed Frog is diploid meaning it has 2 copies of each chromosome, therefore the egg cells allready contain all the genetic material required to develop.

I'm going to tell myself that I had nothing to do with the fertilization and dump them off in the swamp tomorrow.After all the tadpoles look pretty normal,the eyes are a little bigger and the torso just a little longer.But that could be caused by any of a number of things,right? No sense driving myself crazy..Looking back,the whole thing seems nutty,right. I think everything will be ok.

I released the little bastards this morning,I have every reason to beleive they will survive if they were ever intended to in the first place.
I'm still trying to convince myself that there's no way I could of fertilized the eggs,but for the life of me I can't understand how else they could of become fertile any other way.At least now they are out of sight and hopefully soon,out of mind.

I'm not even gonna read this entire thread, just throw in what I know:
cross-species fertilization occurs extremely easily.
The enzymes that the sperm secrete to penetrate the outside of the ovum is universal.
The sperm WILL enter the ovum (almost completely regardless of species), this 'fertilizing' it in some respect.
Any further than that, and the first cell division attempt would realize that the genetic information is VASTLY different and the cells would undergo cell-death. Thus, no monkey-man, or man-frogs, or what have you...

Ok,now things are getting really wierd around here. There have been a lot of family pets missing lately in the neighborhood and sometimes late at night I hear an erie croaking sound coming from the direction of the swamp.Am I loosing my mind!?
I'm going to have to tell someone about this soon before someone gets hurt. Anyone have any advise?

oh my god, i think that was the funniest thread i read in my whole life.
you cant cross-species fertilize and grow, but animals can switch sexes to make babies (think the frog genes in jurassic park, i know youve seen it)

After many sleepless nights, I finally had to tell the doctor about my delema..After a lot of head scratching and strange glares, he decided to put me on Xanax.Things do'nt seem to matter quite as much any more and I don't have strange dreams as much any more either. Not trying to bash you or nothing and I dont even know if their native in your area just ranting, if theyre natural forget I said it...but if theyre not, dumb move indeed..

I have seen that story on some documentary they put on the Science Channel. If i recall correctly the fish was completely destroying the enviroments natural flow of things. It was bad. And all because someone decided to throw their non native pet into the waters. They even showed the guy who caught the first one. He didnt recognize the species and took it into the towns fish study center or something..
Whats worse is not only are their non native frogs swimming around where he released them, but they are human hybrid too. Im telling you, this is how horror movies begin..

I really can't recall. I guess it seemed like a good ideal at the time. I can laugh about it now and call it a "Sperm of the moment decision" I have every reason to believe that these "creatures" are still alive. Let's just hope that they're sterile being that they're hybrids.

its scientifically impossible to mix the species as you did with just sperm and the eggs, it would take alot more scientific knowledge and procedure to achieve success. chances are the frog laid eggs and then switched sexes to fertilize them. some amphibians are well known for their sex shifting abilities when an entire sex dies out in the area or there are no others to be found.

An earlier poster said that your sperm probibly just triggered the growth cycle since the eggs already had both sets of DNA they just cloned themselves.
Have you ever considered going back to look for them in the pond where you ditched your parental responsibilities to see if they are still living there? heh IMO you shoulda kept them for the money, I bet those frogs were valuable. In fact it sounds like a good way to breed rare and valuable frogs without a mate, come to think of it.

yes, i understand what happened. and all im saying is that it is impossible to fertilize frog eggs by dropping your load on them, however it IS possible that the female frog laid eggs, then switched sex to fertilize them.

The real problem is that in the modern days few people even decide to have frog/human babies for fear of the violent and cruel spirit of the world they would be bringing them up in. It's no surprise in these days of nuclear proliferation and imperial conquest more and more people are choosing not to have frog humanoid babies conceived in a pitri dish which they are only comfortable sharing with the people on a message-board populated largely by people who consume drugs regularly.

It's nice to see so many older faces.
If you scroll down you can see the different phases the Pub went through at different periods.
It's kind of like looking at different layers of sedimentary rock...
