assuming some modicum of intelligibility, i think it is more important to format the post with sufficient spaces, huge paragraphs are hard to follow... this is more annoying than a their/there confusion

I agree. I'll read through a post riddled with spelling/grammatical errors (provided it's still intelligible) but there's no way I'll read a Wall O' Text.

For a forum dedicated to awareness and consciousness, is it really that difficult for a member to read their own post before subjugating everyone to yet another example of gibberish?

Especially when there's a spell-check feature right next to the Continue button.
I have no qualms against judging people for their failure to use appropriate spelling/grammar, but I don't think correcting them in a thread helps anything.

Sometimes I cannot even make it to the premise. Not just because of spelling/grammar, but because of piss-poor presentation.
The standard response is "You know what I meant."
Then why not type what you mean? I get tired of decoding drugged-out ramblings.

Oh I agree, but that's you and me. Misspelling to others may give them loose bowels.
When I reread my posts to look for spelling errors I also often see how the post could be constructed more gooder.

I agree. And Poid is definitely the fucking grammar-fuhrer. I think he gets off at pointing that shit out.
But yea, I rarely reread posts. Sometimes I will put 'your' instead of 'you're', or recently 'accept' instead of 'except.' I suppose I type phonetically, and could careless if if other posters are judging me.

If I make mistakes, I appreciate it very much if people point it out. Why spell it wrong if you could spell it correctly?
However, I do agree that some people go overboard and see a spelling mistake as a valid counter-argument. It doesn't mean that someone doesn't know how to spell, that he can't play music. Someone could totally fail at grammar and spelling, and still be a musical genius. But of course, a person who is a musical genius would also have the ambition to have correct spelling.. so OrgoneConclusion is making a good point when he says that sloppiness indicates something.

The context when I have often pointed to spelling errors is when someone puts themselves and their post up as ultimately authoritative.

I see... so in that context, I guess pointing out spelling errors does make for a good argument as nobody has ultimate authority anyway and by claiming they do, and their spelling show they don't, you directly point out a contradiction..

I agree that its annoying to get corrected when you misspell something and its obviously an accident or if you're purposely misspelling out of laziness. On the other hand you have to consider that this forum isn't strictly for the american populace and some people don't but would maybe like to know how to more appropriately express themselves. When i first started posting i made a bunch of spelling errors and i'm glad someone corrected me.

All my posts in this forum are strictly fictional.
They are derived from an acute mental illness , from which i am forced to lie compulsively.
I have never induced any kind of mind altering substance in my life and i have no intentions whatsoever of doing anything illegal.
If I have ever suggested such a thing it would have most likely been , due to my personality disorder and i probably do not remember it at all..

If it comes across as a humorous Freudian slip or pun, it is of benefit to everyone to have it pointed out.

Also, if the correction is in addition to a decent argument/reply, not so bad.
When the correction IS the reply....RIPPED OFF.

Does pointing out other people's spelling/grammar mistakes actually help anything? In my opinion, this practice seems to only derail a thread from its original topic and is not effective towards its intended purpose: namely, ensuring that the grammatical offender will not repeat the same mistake in the future. If someone has not learned proper spelling or grammar from a rightful teacher by the time they are ostensibly 18+ years of age and old enough to be posting on this message board, then a correction by some practically anonymous poster will, in all probability, not be sufficient to make it stick. Not only that, but some posters just plain don't care about adhering to the strict rules of the English language--provided their wording isn't TOO atrocious, the essence of their message is still communicated to the reader. Arguably this can be detrimental to their reputation as many people judge a poster's intelligence on their ability to follow these rules precisely, but it's their choice to make and having the ability to troll/provoke a Grammar Nazi merely by continuing to post the way they do means that the Grammar Nazi has become ineffectual. This is not to mention the countless number of times that he or she may get trolled by a simple typographic error on the part of the "offender". Thoughts?
