kelfio said: I've been growing blue and pearl oysters for about a month and a half now, and for some reason, mine are NOT dropping spores. I've got a thread on the particularities of my grow (I think it's something like "my oyster grow" or something equally original!) so if you'd like the details, check it out.
Suffice to say, I have left the oysters on my straw logs until the rot, just to experiment and see if they will sporulate, and they continuously have not. If there's something special about my method, I'd love to figure it out, because growing oysters without the hassle of spores could change everything for a lot of people.
Well that sound like you have have a special strain? Where did you obtain the strain? Thanks for posting.

As far as I know, it's not a special strain. They're just the blue oysters and pearl oysters from Sporeworks.

Put a piece of black material under them to catch spores. Often oyster spores are hard to see, being clear or white. There are sporeless oyster strains, but I've never cared for the taste of any I've isolated. RR

Besides, they're not nearly as good tasting as shiitake, xxxx but other than that, they're one of my least favorite species, as far as eating goes. RR
Beauty (and taste) are in the eye of the beholder:) I like shitakes, but my wife and family hate them...
So- truly, King Oysters don't have a bad spore load compared to say Pearl Oysters?

Kings have tiny spore loads compared to white oysters.

Most King oyster farms use very low light and high CO2 levels to encourage fat stems and tiny caps. This keeps the spore load much lower than with other varieties.
As for shiitake, it's taken me a decade to learn to cook it properly. I'm planning sometime this winter while we're snowed in to get out my lights, tripods, and cameras and make some mushroom cooking videos. Most people don't realize that while oyster and button mushrooms cook in a minute or two, shiitake really needs to be sauteed in butter for more like ten minutes. Just about everyone who doesn't like shiitake has not cooked it long enough to get the flavor and texture right. Shiitake also needs more salt than other mushrooms to taste at its best. RR

That sound like a great project. So you have all the lighting equipment from when you made the mushroom videos? You produced the whole thing?

Sorry I kinda got lost side tracked. Would be nice to find a strain that you could grow that did not have a spore load that affected you.
