US Navy officer jumps to death after cocaine arrest in Manila

Manila - A 35-year-old US Navy officer jumped to his death on Monday in the Philippines after he was arrested at an airport for allegedly carrying cocaine, police said.
Lieutenant Commander Scintar Mejia was about to board a flight to Los Angeles from Manila on Sunday when a pack of cocaine was found in his luggage.
Mejia became unruly after the discovery and even accused officials at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport of a frame-up, according to police Senior Superintendent Manuel Pintado.
Pintado, deputy director of the airport police, said the suspect was detained overnight at the airport and committed suicide after seeking permission to go to the bathroom on Monday morning.
'On the way to the toilet, he suddenly ran from his escorts and jumped head first into a 10-feet stairway,' Pintado said. 'He died while being treated in a nearby hospital.'

So let me get this straight. An Officer of the US military is accused of smuggling cocaine out of what is pretty much a third world country. He denies any involvement. And then "Jumps head first" down a stairway. I wonder how hard it would be to force yourself to jump head first down a stairwell, without trying to stop yourself. Anyone else think this just may be a bunch of BS? Maybe its just me...

Diving down a staircase head first while in police custody = likely suicide?
I don't know, I am with wildernessjunkie on this one. Sounds way fishy. Otherwise they really need to work on the security of staircases in police buildings, because detainees sure do seem to fall down them disproportionally often compared to regular buildings

hmmm prison in a third world country until being extradited and put in federal prisons. i'm sure i'd be ready to off myself too. i can bet he picked up a pretty good habit.
i kicked a bundle a day habit of dope in jail, and they had me in solitary under med watch. i can tell you that it took every ounce of strength not to stuff my sheet in my jumpsuit and hang myself from the water pipes when the deps walked away.

Good thing cocaine is illegal, imagine what would have happened if he had not been arrested for cocaine and not jumped to his death and still been serving his country in the military! :gasp:
How about this. Why don't they say that if you serve in the military for at least 4 years, you will be legally allowed to grow/possess/buy illegal drugs for the rest of your life. Imagine how many people would be rushing to the US Military recruiters office to join and fight for the country. They wouldn't need commercials or harassment anymore to get people to join, people would willingly rush to sign up. 
They could even say that you have to be randomly drug tested every month while you are in the military for the 4 year term, this would cut down on the drug use while in the military and the soldiers who wanted to use drugs legally, would be willing to do this.
I think a lot of people who do illegal substances, are against joining the military, but this kind of law could change this. Maybe they could even have 2 options: 1) if you have drug charges and make it through 4 years without being tested positive, we will wipe the charges. or 2) if you get caught with a drug charge you can join the military for 4 years to never have it show up on your record.
I don't know, I just think it would help a lot of they linked 4+ year US Soldiers to the right to use illegal drugs. This does not mean all soldiers would be FORCED to EVER ingest ANY illegal substance/drug, it just means they will never get fines/citations/arrests/criminal-record/etc.

Meh, I dunno. I wanna join the military and if they told me not to do certain things I wouldn't do them... They tell you for christs sake "If you want to be part of this do not do this...." and etc.
