Just finished making this for my ol' lady for Christmas

I carved this out of basswood. It's a Welsh love spoon. Welsh sailors, who had long hours to kill on board their ships, used to carve these for their wives. Or at least that's the story.
It's not perfect, got a few flaws that probably nobody will really notice much except for me, but I'm still pretty proud of it. Especially since it's the first thing I've ever carved.
Question for any other woodworkers, though:
I had originally wanted to stain this pupppy a real dark brown. However, on all the scrap basswood I had from this same piece, I could NOT get a stain of any real darkness to stain the wood without being blotchy and streaky. I even went out and got some of the pre-stain wood conditioner in desperation and it actually made it worse. Is there some trick to staining certain woods that I'm not aware of?
In hindsight, though, I think it actually looks much better with the lighter stain and hides the flaws in my carving better.

Great work man!
I'd personally just use some oil based varnish on it (use a lint free cloth to apply it). It will make it much darker and protect the wood. Then sand with a fine grit (maybe 600) sandpaper between coats. Over time, the natural aging process "patina" will also darken the color. I've never really been a fan of staining wood. Personal preference I guess.

Yeah, actually, they were a little sore
Plus, I had little cuts all over my fingertips from carving it (need to get a Kevlar carving glove), and I just about wore my fingerprints off of one hand from sanding it. The fingertips on that hand now are dry and peeling like after a sunburn, I guess from rubbing the layers of skin off.
It was fun, though. I've got the carving bug bad now, too. I went out and snagged a piece of black walnut lumber from a relative to try and carve another one.

Hey, no pain , no gain, you'r willingness to sacrifice your hands to make your partner this awesome craft only shows how much you care about her, and makes the spoon that much more meaningful

Not sure on hours, but it was a few hours a day most of the days in December leading up to Christmas.
It probably shouldn't have taken that long, but I'm a noob carver.
