Here's some shots from a stroll around my SF neighborhood today. Wow, this hunting gets easier and easier the more I look.  Its like instead of finding mushrooms, they keep finding me!!! Its hard to look for new woodchip spots when the grass treats me so well.

New to this world of mushrooms and very much in awe of what is out there. I like to fish not only for recration but also for food and consider mushrooms the same way. I like to be outdoors and in general like to be able to know/identify what I am looking or sharing space with. If I can also eat it and make some killer soup with a fresh mushroom well even better.

I live in Marin County, a beautiful place with Mt Tam, Pt Reyes, lots of green space and parks. I became interested in mushrooms when I stumbled on some chantarelles by accident. Bought some books and now want to be able to identify some of the mushrooms I find in the field. Yesterday I went out just before nightfall in Marin County. I need to take a camera next time but I took these shots with my blackeberry.

pretty big one.

same as the one above but smaller

I think this is a deadly ammanita. There were tons of them. Beautiful

I got skunked on actives today, but as with piemel, I found some surprise chanterelles.  They were under pine.

I also found this funny looking fellow:

I also dyed some wool yarn with leratiomyces ceres.  It turned out a pretty yellow color, with the aid of aluminum sulfate and HCL to lower the pH.  My understanding is the dye derived from leratiomyces ceres is the same as that in hypholoma fasicuculare; they definitely turn out about the same. The colors didn't turn out too well in the photo, but it's a kind of cool thing.  Even though it's not exactly in line with the context of the shroomery, I'll try to get some real pictures of the colors that my various finds make up in the near future.

yea! it was by far the biggest cyan patch if ever come across. its funny every time i see a patch that extensive it always seems to be on a hillside, or slope.
all my biggest finds have been on hills. it makes sense i guess, seeing as hillsides are usualy chipped very thick so that all the chips dont just wind up piling up at the bottom.

Beautiful find NOTAPILLOW.  I searched in the East Bay today before the rain started to fall.  Got skunked but it's always great to be outside and exploring new places.

big day in the bay [Re: auweia]
    #13635093 - 12/15/10 02:38 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Heres some pics from yesterday's pickings.  I couldn't come close to picking everything alone.  There were SO many that I couldn't even come close to grabbing even the over done ones without looking to crazy.  But then again in SF crazy is kinda normal.  One pic is of some chicken of the woods (i think), and some fly agarics from Bonny Doon.  Which, holy crap!  right now theres a mile stretch of road off Hwy 1, north of Santa Cruz, that has literally hundreds of beautiful red amanitas.  It is the longest single patch I've ever seen.  It stretches curve after curve right up to the highway.  A truly Amazing sight!  The pics in the middle come from a crazy corner spot that was completely hidden with those big leaves.  I saw one peaking out then realized the whole bed was covered in them.  All those pics I had to move leaves out of the way to get the shots.  Super DL spot about to fully blow up.  Hope you like the pics!

Indeed, I've lived here in the Bay Area for 24+ years and never knew until last year that these little mushrooms that I used to pick up and look closely at, were capable of looking back!!  How odd.
