I learned from multiple field guides, The Shroomery, MushroomExpert, and field experience. I have more recently learned a lot from joining the Puget Sound Mycological Society. I still have a long way to go, but I know I will never (at least seriously, and likely not at all) make myself ill from the ingestion of wild mushrooms.
As far as Death Cap (Amanita phalloides) looking like Liberty Caps (Psilocybe semilanceata), I have no idea what you are talking about.
Good luck and happy hunting/researching!
*EDIT- Buy Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora.

Well its called mycology. You can learn it from many sources. It takes many years and you just can't Id mushrooms out of a book to persay. Spore prints and microscopes are required. Welcome to the addiction BROTHER.........

Death caps don't look anything like liberty caps. I got all of my iding skills from shroomery/internet and the Audubon Society Field Guide to mushrooms. I'm not anywhere close to an expert, but I have managed to not poison myself. A good way to start is getting pics of the mushies you find and posting them up here with ID requests so the experts can help you out. You'll learn what characteristics you need to look for, and once you come across a species in real life and have it ID'd it makes it a lot easier for you to recognize those.
If you are mainly looking for actives there is a ton of info about them in documents on this site. Always post pics before you eat anything though, at least until you know what you're doing.

Would you care to explain where you received this information? Someone fed you a line of BS.
The only thing I can think of in this realm would be someone saying a Galerina (which has some of the same toxins as the Deathcap) looks similar to Psilocybe Cyanecens.
Otherwise, Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora is an awesome book to start with. This website, Mushroom Observer and mentors.
At least you're asking the right questions before just munching on random caps. Keeps reading, keep searching.

Didn't you ever watch the movie "Shrooms"? Don't eat the Death Cap!
I didn't try to eat any mushrooms my first season and I usually collect a species a few times and ID it before I try to eat it. Only puked once and that was from morels!Yummy both ways!

Pick a mushroom you want, learn all about it, including it's deadly or toxic look a likes, and note thier differences, ie spore color, stipes, bruising, and when you dont know for sure, toss it or put it up here with a proper ID request

Within 3 days of eating magic mushrooms for the first time I bought Mushrooms Demystified which has a dichotomous key and the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms. That was a long, long time ago.
Kuo's website is pretty good. It's a ego-filled name, but don't let that stop you from reading it.

...started with only a clue, they turn blue...didn't eat anything until it was verifiable...and that blue is definitely verifiable...cubes were the first that I found...moved away from cube conditions (bit the hook of military service), and picked up bits and pieces of research along the way...picked many different kinds over the years, and learned them more each time...you'll start to get familiar after a while...checked the intra-web mucho amounts...www.erowid.org is a good online reference, as well as shroomery, mykoweb, and many others that pop up on the 'ol search results...picked many different kinds and did my best at memorizing them...got some image associations on a couple trips to smart-shops in the Dam...always look for them anywhere I go...not just the goods, but any of them I can find...see lots of repeats, but familiarity is a good method...got that Audobon Field Guide and Stamets book...and only recently started hangin' on here to get some interaction with others who share this "addiction" (as stated above by NEWBIE...I agree)...been in OR for a few years, and found a couple different actives in my area...hands on association really places things in perspective...pick and observe...pick and observe...pick and observe...can figure a few species on my on, but a lot clearer since getting involved here...you don't ever want to be that kid who says, "Can I eat these and trip ballz"...that mentality is a deficit to learning more...don't accept "might be kinda blue"...that ain't gonna help your liver any...so turn off the LED flashlight, and look at with real light...and definitely learn what not to eat...if it's close, pass until next time...you'll know when it's skrate goods...

That's a good perspective for us beginners.
Personally, I started with Arora's Mushrooms Demystified and the accompanying "pocket guide," in addition to Stamets' Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World. Also, Shroomery is of course awesome. I started researching only 5 months ago, and now I can narrow what I find to genus in most cases. Getting to that 100% on species is the difficult part. Where do you learn? Everywhere you can! Let books, mentors, websites, and most especially, the mushrooms teach you. Pay attention to the details. Not just of the mushroom, but of the environment in which it is growing, the time of year, location, weather etc. Everything counts, and you will find, we hope, a greater connection to this planet that has created us.
Yes, welcome to the addiction.

I first learned how to ID right here on the shroomery, back then I was looking for actives. Didn't take me long to find a patch of cyanescens on my own, don't even think I posted an ID request, just paid VERY close attention to detail and knew what to look for.
This was my first season picking edibles, and I just happened to see a mushroom in the woods behind my house that I thought looked similar.. brought it inside, looked at some websites on what to look for to tell it apart from look alikes (false gills, texture of stem, etc.) and then I was on my way.
Not long after that I found my first lobsters.. brought a couple home and looked it up online, they are a VERY easy mushroom to identify of course so that didn't take long. Found hedgehog mushrooms while out looking for chanterelles, I'd remembered seeing pictures of the teeth on the underside and was pretty sure and again brought a couple home to ID.
I'd like to get a good mushroom guide that I can bring on my hunting trips, but until then google and the shroomery work great for me.

I first started learning with my parents... I probably knew more mushrooms when I was 5 years old then most people do in their lifetimes. We had a lot of books in the house, went hunting every season together, later I went by myself, IDing everything I could find, and finally here on the shroomery, seeing many species from different parts of the world has really helped me improve my skills. There are no wild actives where I live, and I only eat 5 or so wild species, so my main interest is hunting, IDing and observation of these wonderful creatures.
