Cannabutter prepartion, salt or unsalted?
    #13451247 - 11/07/10 10:30 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I heard that when extracting THC using fats you shouldn't include any salt because the salt would hinder the THC from being dissolved.

Is this based on a real reason?

This thread was moved from The Ethnobotanical Garden.

Reason:
The Ethno Garden is focused on growing plants and not extractions.

You'll no doubt get better responses in here as well.

I don't know how the salt would react with the fat/oil, but if it's binding with the fat, there's less space for the THC to bind to, unless the THC displaces it...

The only real worry is if the salt damages the THC, and on that i can't answer, but if it doesn't then just use more butter?
Interesting Q tho, never thought of this when making butter :S

I use unsalted butter simply because as soon as the butter melts, a lot of the salt comes out of the butter and collects on the pan in sludge anyway.

Any recipe where you need butter is a recipe you can add salt to by itself if it's not salty enough.

Unsalted just seems easier to work with IMO.

I find coconut oil is better than butter for cannabis cooking.

Not only is it more efficient for extracting the goodies because of a higher sat fat content, but it tastes better in most things including baked goods and deserts. I always hated how cannabutter made things taste...

Use coconut oil, its much better than butter, its 98% saturated fat so absorbs a lot of THC, it also keeps its good stuff & doesn't turn into transfattyacids at high temps, it also increases metabolism so you'll come up faster

You can use it in any recipie that calls for butter, i'll never go back to butter after trying coconut oil!

I'm with the coconut oil people on this one.  I do a pretty long hot-cold extraction as well, and also add soy lecithin, an emulsifier.  Makes shit hit in 10-15 minutes and about 25% stronger.

I also like to decarboxylate the weed in the oven first.

Not as effectively as an oven.
