Edit: To be honest, I actually start to get a little nervous when I seem to be getting close
The mind can't handle it, its true your right, but you are not the mind
Mind is just thoughts that feed off the feeling of 'I', so when the 'I' is investigated the thoughts can begin to swirl into a frenzy, a form of self defense, they just want to survive like everything else
This is where you can calmly but intensely inquire into the true nature of 'I', is it really stuck in these thoughts? Is it really stuck in the feeling of nervousness?
Just stay open & observational, don't assume anything, don't buy anything, even nice feelings, feelings of liberation, keep inquiring 'is this what i am?' 'what is aware of this?' 'who am i?' its all the same question that brings the light of consciousness to shine on itself rather than a passing object, when consciousness shines on an object you see the object, but when consciousness shines on itself...what happens?
Questioning like this the mind thins out into total silence... but even the word silence is too noisy to describe it

Ha, you fucker. I should have known someone from Shroomery would be watching that. I'm not making any claims. But obviously, the RT thread is there for all to see.
It's a good system they've got over there. At least, it is if you're me. I'm sure other people would respond better to other methods, but for me this was a good fit. The membership will coddle you and play your games just enough to keep you from running away, and then Ciaran stops them, and tells you to either shut the fuck up and figure it out, or shut the fuck up and get out. If you face up to it, you're done, and if you run away, you feel a coward or a weakling, which insults your self-identity, which drives you back.
BTW it isn't really one thing. It's one issue, the issue of self, but it isn't one isolated change in mindset, and it isn't quite a binary switch from identity-with-"I" to not. You'll notice I'm still using the word "I." It's good shorthand, it just isn't you is all.
Internally, the process felt like unfolding and correcting something that was twisted inside-out, but there's a one billion percent chance that that was just my own peculiar way of experiencing it.

So, since you now accept that your personality is an illusion you've popped? And this is enlightenment?
Am I following this right?

Hey congrats laserpig, I got it too
Ciarian's prelude to his awakening primed me. I read some Alan Watts, took a shower and with the help of guruu kept repeating "Who am I?" "I am thinking" and eventually it happened and instantly everything fell away and there "I" was, showering.
All I can say is this is definitely not enlightenment. It does feel lighter, for sure. I can't believe this guy hasn't read alan watts...in "The Way of Zen," he talks about this same concept over and over and over. It's incorrect for Ciarian to say it's not Zen, because it is completely Zen.
I now feel like this, "The Way of Zen," p. 144
"As a Zen master said, "Nothing is left to you at this moment but to have a good laugh.""

Stay with Alan Watts he's more reliable than some dude who claims he is enlightened calling other people unenlightened, i'd bet nowhere in any of his books would you hear Alan Watts claim 'i am enlightened' or claim he is an authority on what is Zen or is not Zen.
Ciaran thinks he's an authority on what enlightenment should or shouldn't sound like when there's 6 billion people on this plant so 6 billion different ways it can be expressed.

I don't think you really need to lose anything, the only thing that falls away when it comes to enlightenment is ideas you had about yourself to leave your true Self as it has always been.
So how to lose ideas about yourself?
The most direct way is to investigate the sense of self & see all that ideas about it are not true, its just here with no agenda, maybe i'm just saying this in a nicer way, whereas Ciarans way is a bit more aggressive so kinda forces you to look at yourself, i just don't feel any need to be forceful with anyone, if your ready to see, you will see

So true, I've been trying to lead the horses to water for over five years here and most are still dying of thirst.
But like you said they will see if they ever become ready to see. In the mean time I'm walkin the dogs. See?

I agree completely, and I do so because of exactly that work of Alan Watts.
The hit-you-with-a-stick, you-could-realize-the-tuth-sooner-by-staring-at-a-bookcase-than-reading-the-texts, no-bullshit approach is Zen and a half. What Ciaran seems to mean when he says it's not Zen is, there's no riddles, no koans. There's no "how do you get a goose out of a bottle without breaking it" crap. "Direct pointing at the mind of man."

Ain't even a thang. Actually, I'm glad that you did. Saved me the enormous awkardness of figuring how to say "uh ... so guys ... I'm, like, uh, enlightened now. Please believe me."

I tried. I gave it my best shot, with a completely open mind. Basically, if you dont agree 100% with 'the way', you will get shot down by them and they will try to reconfigure your head. I don't see enlightenment in this procedure... the method they are using can really do some damage to someone if it gets into the wrong head...
Anyways, im off to play some music, the place where I find my own enlightenment

Thats the only gripe i have with it really, telling people they 'don't exist' or 'you have no self' is not a healthy way to truth IMO Questioning self identity yes, but repeating to yourself 'i don't exist' 'there is no self', i couldn't think of a less healthy mantra
Self existence is a fact for every conscious being, why deny it?
What remains unquestioned is - we ultimately exist as what?

It's not a mantra. Or rather, it's not supposed to be. It's a challenge staring you in the face. Some may interpret it as a mantra, but they've forgotten the critical three words: "Is it true?" Not a reassuring prayer, but an unsettling question.

The existence of conscious beings is a fact. Self existence is not.

I thought this was total joke at first but it is beginning to make sense. I have tricked myself before though.
