My little brown rice flour VS dark rye flour VS rice bran test

For my second grow, I decided to do a little substrate comparison using three different types of flour and two different strains. All jars were made using a ratio of 2 parts verm, 1 part flour and 1 part water. And the jars are 1/4 pint jars, not 1/2 pint (so no one gets confused if the colonization times or yields seem off). All were inoculated by multispore syringe. The results are below.
So far, plain brown rice flour is doing a little better, but only slightly moreso than rice bran, and the dark rye flour is doing considerably worse than both.
This is surprising to me. I've heard a lot of high praise for dark rye flour in past threads and how it speeds up colonization times. This isn't showing to be the case for me. Is it because I kept the same ratio of water as for BRF and rice bran? I've heard some people say they had to use less water with dark rye flour.
Edit: Updated results 10/22/2010

When you get your final results, (or now or whenever) please post in the Efficiency Challenge thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13043269#13043269

Sweet, I definitely will.
Does the way I'm doing it count as two (or three?) grows for comparison for your challenge?

If you take two or three different grains to completion, that's data.

Bear in mind, the more nutritious a substrate is, the slower colonization will be.
The real enchilada will be the substrate that will go from inoculation to finished fruits in the least time per pound of product.
I'm currently trying to work out the math for a new measure of B.E.. Currently, Biological Efficiency only compares the dry weight of the substrate to the wet weight of the finished product, but doesn't include a variable for time. Time should be included in the mix, since a substrate that might produce 95% of the product of another, but do it in half the time is a more efficient choice. RR

Hrm, I didn't know that, thanks RR. I was already thinking this must mean the DRF is going to be bad later on, but this makes me think twice.

Continuity is better if you update at the end of a thread rather than the first post. This way the progress can be seen and compared. RR

Multispore, sorry. I should've mentioned that in the first post. I'll add it.

Another update on the progress.
BRF continues to take a large lead. RB has a minuscule edge over DRF, but are basically the same.

Another update.
Birthed all but two of the remaining jars. #4 BRF jar had its first flush, 27 wet grams (not too shabby for a 1/4 pint cake). RB continues to lag behind DRF, with two jars still not fully colonized.
Here's the updated results. Yes, I am a spreadsheet nerd.
Also some cake pr0n from the grow.

Harvested #1 and #2. Pulled 22g off one and 30g (!) off another.
Also moar cake pr0n.

Welllll... I'm gonna have to just completely eliminate rice bran and just make this test brown rice flour vs. dark rye flour.
Two of my rice bran jars stalled out. The other two rice bran cakes that finished produced flushes of stunted mutant mushrooms.
I knew something was up and I went back and looked at the gigantic bag of rice bran I bought at the feed store. I checked it when I bought it for any mention of fungicides or anything that sounded like it might be treated, but I apparently missed something. In little fine print it says that it's treated with "proprietary stabilizers" that will keep it from turning "rancid for up to one year." I assume that propietary stabilizer includes fungicide or something else that the mushrooms don't like. I should've waited and bought the brand Roger Rabbit recommends, but I couldn't find it local.
So, basically, I got a 40 lb bag of useless rice bran. Looks like I need to find a horse to donate it to.
