Any electrician/light fixture help?

Ive acquired a hanging fluorescent billiard light. I was told "it doesnt work". They tried new lights and got nothing, so they gave it to me. Any suggestions on where to start? Things to check, replace? I dont care how much it costs to fix...its a really nice crown royal fixture from the bar. Worst case scenario I could just replace the whole fixture and fit it inside the crown royal lamp itself, couldnt I?

Replace the ballast, you can buy them at home depot. It is usually a long slim rectangular box

in addition to the ballast, It could also be the starter, also available from local hardware stores, Its a small metal cylinder with two prongs on it, inside the fixture, wired before the ballast.

You cant just hook up any ballast to that bad girl and hope it works. Research the model light you have, find the ballast, study the wiring diagram.

Well here are the specs for the model, its a 3 lamp http://www.dynamicballast.com/pdf/DY332IS120.pdf
So what would be a good ballast to start looking for? A 120 volt 3 lamp? I would prefer to wander in to home depot and grab one if they have it, but I guess Ill order one if I really have to. On the ballast it says "for 2 lamp operation, insulate unused blue lead". So if I find a 4 lamp 120 volt ballast, could I just wire for 3?
Hows about this one?

if it was me i would buy the exact ballast that came with the fixture and lamp.
but you can find one with the same specs and use it. the info in green is the most important to match up. yeah most ballasts will come with lots of wires wrapped up with it. you take the ones you need for the number of lamps you are burning and wire nut and tape the rest off.

Well it seems like its kind of a newer light, so why would the ballast burn out so quickly? I suppose I could get the exact model, but if its a shitty ballast why would I want to put another one in?

Anything from a power spike to a faulty component used during manufacturing.

too small a ballast, the lamps are pulling too many amps through it and burning them girls up. get a bigger one.

Good point Suess, I would research finding a good electroic ballast. You know as well as i do he needs to make shure its matched with the right bulbs.
I like the T-8s better than the little t-5`s with flouros I can see better with the higher K bulbs
