Liberty Cap Season UK ends today.

Went to my usual spot in Scotland today and for the first time this season there was prettty much none. Usually manage to find a couple of hundred at a time but today there was nada. Was biting cold today and not a lot of rain but methinks this is the end of the road. Freezing weather expected for the rest of the week although it is supposed to be getting milder by Saturday.
Anyone else think the end is nigh?

Fucking freezing here in Newcastle, we had a frost a few days ago, but it did nothing to hurt the geordie libs. As the geordies would, they kept popping up, however I think last nights frost will win this time... Guess I better go pick whats left on my fields

Is that really a saying in Scotland? I live in the Baltics, pretty sure that your weather can often be worse than ours in Estonia. Hehe. Too funny.

Not even close, dude. It's mid October. A few frozen blades of grass don't scare the libs. When the top layer of the ground starts freezing is when lib season ends.
Happy b-day, elprawn.

Our season in Estonia is pretty much over too - seems we have the same weather as in much of the UK (and indeed most of the places libs grow)this year. I went out yesterday after we finally got a very little rain and found only about 4 tiny ones and absolutely nothing in the main location. Lots of mycelium though, who knows, if we get dumped on for about two days we just might get another small flush. Getting ocassional frosts at night too, luckily though my locations are right next to the sea and it is often breezy which gives us an extension on our season, further inland they are probably screwed.
Question for German Kahuna - do you know if searching in the sedge grass and thereby disrupting the mycelium would have a major effect on pinning? I'm sure it hads somewhat of an effect.

tap the cap with your finger, then reach as far as you can down the stem and pinch it off. i've been picking like that for a long time and they still grow everywhere i picked them in the past.

What exactly do you hope to achieve by tapping the cap? Mushrooms are very capable of releasing their seed with a lot more vigor than you release yours. By the time you do your tapping they will have shot their load containing billions of spores into the winds already. I agree on the pinching, though, especially with libs. If you don't do that you will often pull up a clump of substrate that weighs more than the actual mushroom and a lot of mycelium that could potentially still form fruit bodies with it. A thick stemmed mushroom, like a bolete, you can simply twist out of its substrate without doing much harm. With the tiny, delicate mushrooms that doesn't work.

That is primarily how I pick them as well and indeed have had two small ones come up in one clump of sedge where I previously found some. My question is more geared to the fact that in my never ending quest to becoming the best hunter I can be, I sometimes lift up the sedge grass to have a look at the dead vegetation underneath to see if there is any growing mycelium or pins underneath so that I can narrow it down on my next hunt. Trying to understand the beast if you will.

Indeed... I hadnt even read that. For the record I have not, nor ever will tap the cap of a mushroom before picking it. hehe. Did you read my question to you above? regarding the mycelium.
