Grow Supplies In Canada 6

A lot of you may have seen me around the boards in the past year as I have begun my journey into growing and studying gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. During this time I have faced many interesting challenges and questions in regards to purchasing supplies from Canadian companies and stores. Some things are just damned tricky to find in Canada!
Some members have suggested starting a sticky thread to help other Canadian members find certain items and I believe this is a great idea and I will be starting and maintaining this project.
If you are a Canadian member and know of any good sites for certain supplies please make a post! Share the information, they do not have to be online sites but perhaps different stores and the province they are located in. I will be adding to this list as I find links, stores and time to write up blurbs on places to look for certain items. I will also add as others post links. I hope this will become a tool that will help out countless Canadians down the road! Cheers EM666
Thanks for everyone's help! I will try to keep the main post updated, but please everyone read through as there are many GREAT Ideas being shared here EH.

Nice!
You've added the only one I can think of atm, Efston Science.
Of course there's Canadian Tire, Rona, etc., for coir, peat, jars, etc.
I'll do some searching.

This is a great idea, I'll contribute as much as I can to it.
So far all my supply hunting has been in local stores, other than inoculant.. for some reason I couldn't find a store in my local community that carries spores
I've always thought it would be helpful to have a thread listing which products can be found at which stores in Canada. I realize not all locations carry the same inventory and there will be different stores across different regions but it might help to have a starting point for someone who has no idea where to find coir or gypsum in Canada.
This list is just off the top of my head. Feel free to add it to the top post, it would be great to see this list expanded upon with more contributions from other Canadians. There are no doubt other stores that stock these products, and possibly some stuff that I have missed. If I can think of anything else I'll be sure to add it.

One product I've had a hell of a time finding in Canada is denatured alcohol for flame sterilizing. So far I haven't found it, so for flame sterilizing my needles I use a butane torch lighter to heat the needle until red hot moving from the base to the tip. Not very comfortable but it seems to work.
In regards to mason jars, I've found they are largely a seasonal product, with best time to buy being the fall during harvest. Quart (1L) jars are in abundant supply at most department and hardware stores, in both regular mouth and wide mouth varieties.
The most commonly stocked 1/2 pint wide mouths are Bernardin 1/2 pint wide mouths which are less than ideal for BRF cakes. They have a small bulge about 2/3 up the side of the jar that causes the cakes to get stuck when birthing. They can be shimmied out using a butterknife with little consequence, but obviously they're less than ideal.
I have yet to find 1/2 pint wide mouths for sale in Canada that are tapered on the sides. Some stores carry Bernardin 1/4 pint jars that are tapered on the sides, but all the 1/2 pint wide mouth jars I've seen have straight sides with a slight bulge. Anyone know of a store that carries tapered wide mouth 1/2 pint jars?
So far I've been unable to find a store that carries decent sized pressure cookers. I've been looking for a while but so far the only size I've found is the Presto 6 quart. I'm more in the market for a 17-27 quart pressure cooker. Anyone know of a store that carries them?
I like to shop locally as I'd prefer to get the item in my hands when I make the purchase rather than wait for shipping. Ultimately though if there is no option to purchase locally, online shopping can be very convenient in that case.
And remember, we're all in this together. Keep your stick on the ice!
Edit: Added some suggestions, thanks Peterthinks, Shitsherrif and tusca!

The Home Hardware in my area doesn't carry the bales, but they do have 2.2kg bags of coir pellets for about the same price. I found those large bales of coir at Canadian Tire however.
Thanks for the link.

If you ask they will order in, they also can get parts for Presto pressure cookers too, like rubber seals and weights.

I use a mason jar filled with 99% Iso that i had left over from making Oil. You can get the Iso from any pharmacy area like london drugs, or superstores.
Slam a hole in the metal lid of the jar and leave a bit of cotton string hainging in the alcohol to use as a wick. It works great and when im finished i use some saran-wrap with a elastic to keep the alcohol from evaporating out.
I got my Agar from T&T in little 30g packets called Agar-Agar. Its got no sugar or flavour.. its pure stuff.
The petri dishes and scalples and stuff like that ive got from the local Science Supply. I googled them and had to go directly to the guys house.

If you mean isopropol alcohol It's usually behind the counter at drug stores. Failing that If they want to know why you want 99 iso you can use it to sterilize egg incubation chambers.

I had to go online PRESTO COOKERS anything large is called a "Canner", so if you just look for "Cooker" you will only find small ones.
FedEx for Tyvec envelopes, find an office near you and get a few, they won't blink it you keep it reasonable like 4 or less. Or you could buy a bunch from STAPLES
Syringes, needles, 12 to 20 CC UFA but you pay out the ass
Syringes, needles, up to 5 CC Almost any drug store, ask at counter 18 gauge 1.5 inch about 10 cents each. save the recipt it's a tax write off LOL (Serious)
6 inch or 3.5 inch spinal needles....looking for some now.

These are some great tips, thanks for the info guys.
Another thing I've been having trouble finding is RTV Red Gasket Sealant. I've checked Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart so far with no luck. It seems like it should be in the superglue/silicone section but to no avail. Anyone know where to buy RTV sealant in Canada?
Also regarding 99% IPA, I always pick up a gallon jug of it from our local animal feed/supply store. They sell the gallon jugs for a very reasonable price (usually $15 or so). It's used for various sanitary applications in the animal industry (like egg incubators as you mentioned).

Great List
Denatured Alcohol is sold in large jugs at Fireplace center stores or general paint, for the new ethanol burning fireplaces. You can always burn rubbing alcohol or ISO 99% from the drug store.
Also HD has the cheapest clear Bins 18gal for 7 dollars.
WBS: Petexcetera Petland
Pressure cooker: Canadian tire (mirro)
Verm: Monster bags from local garden center. Or landscape supplier.
Gypsum: Local Gardens store, buy it in 6 pound boxes. Landscape supplier.
Rye Grass seed: Local Farm store. They all have rye seed of some sort.
Syringes: Any pharmacy with have up to 10ml Larger than 10 up to 60ml I find at my local medical supply store (every city has lots of these) and/or local pharmacies. (non corp) 60ml/cc costs me $1.75 from the local pharmacy, the medical supply store was out because the nurses bought the 60ml's up for Jello shots.
RTV silicon: Candian Tire has this and so does Lordco. But I've been told regular 100% silicon will hold up just fine in the PC

At Canadian tire check automotive, it's used for engine gaskets. comes in a little silver tube I think.
I just use plain clear Silicone, it works fine....don't get the bathroom stuff! it has a fungicide in it! LOL "My jars won't grow!"
And make 2 holes close together on the lid and make the silicone injection port over both, if you make only one hole the injector port can spin around....probably not a big deal but it bugs me. Sanding with rough grit on both sides helps it stick too
Clear stuff lets you see the hole too, no jabbing the lid metal by mistake.

Eky: Canadian Tire has a 22Qt Mirro PC for $130. I Purchased one last Christmas and received another one In a trade. Gotta love having 2 22Qt PC's..Now I wish I had a smaller 6-10Qt one for LC's and the like, sometimes firing up the big PC for small projects seems wasteful
Oct 12th 2010: Added a link to 5gallons.com a Canadian based brew store Has good prices on DME,LME,Yeast,Dextrose. Also added a few ideas to the local supply lists. Verm, Perlite, Peat moss, ect can be found at hydroponic stores as well as local gardening/ nursery stores.

This could turn into your version of the UK supply thread.
Ours is out of date from the OP being offline for a while but hes back now!
Lot harder getting supplies and nice Pc's. Well maybe not quite hard, just expensive.

I think thats important. Having a location, province and city.
Some areas you'll get things with ease while others not so much. Gypsum is a perfect example of this.

Tapered 250ml jars? Good luck finding them in stores.
I don't do the PF Tek anymore so I no longer worry about that frustration.
The 250ml low profile wide mouth jars are probably best for the PF Tek.

I find the 250ml Wide mouth short half pints work awsome for the PF TEK AS LONG as you do not pack your substrate to much. I have had problems a few times with packed Pl. djamor cakes, but jimmied them out.

I have dealt with Prolab scientific. They offer 2 section and no section dish's, 100mmX15mm I believe $10 per 25 dish sleeve, and there shipping is roughly $14-20 UPS. They ship out of Quebec and you get what you pay for.
I do not have any dealings with indigo instruments but might make an order in the future as the shipping and dish's are cheaper then ordering through Prolab.

Up and on again, got sent home sick from work, working on the next hangover! LOL Yes I tried the plastic, they work great! I just like glass better.
On a side note if you use plastic you can heat up a needle cherry hot with a torch and stick it right through the lid to inoculate!
Cool shit in my opinion.

Isopropyl alcohol can be found at shoppers drug mart and rexall and dextrose is essentially corn sugar and can be found at bulk barn as well, they will give you the same stuff at a local home brew shop if you ask them. Also, make your own wine places may have it, and may be able to get you liquid malt extract if I that's what mean when you say malt and not the malted barley itself.

I get my alcohol and micropore tape from Shoppers Drug Mart but any drug store will obviously have it.
Every home brew place I've been to has malt and dextrose.

tusca was recommending local garden centers as some sell it by the 6lb box. I personally haven't been able to locate a box of gypsum myself but I am still looking, got a few more garden centers to stop in at.
Until then I just get my gypsum from a 2'x2' chunk of drywall patch that I picked up at Home Depot (before I knew about the free stickers -- d'oh). My fiance recently picked up a mortar and pestle, I've been eager to try it out for a while. Works great to break up gypsum (as long as I'm careful about not inhaling the dust).
I recall reading a post by RR where he said the garden gypsum he picks up is simply packaged crushed drywall panels as you can still see little chunks of drywall paper here and there in the gypsum.
I realize this doesn't really answer your question but I thought I'd throw it out there for anyone else following along.

Added a few ideas under local supplies. Thanks for everyones additions, this thread is going in the right direction for sure!
As well yesterday while browsing through a discount book bin I found a "Guide to Canadian Healthcare 2006-2007" That has a HUGE section in the back on suppliers of anything hospital related. I think I have struck a goldmine and will be posting some sites/ companies in the future for everyone to check out. Not bad for a $1.

No, no coincidence.
I have never seen a bag or box of gypsum, and I've been all over Ontario. Whenever I ask for gypsum I get the WTF look like I'm from another planet.
This is why I get on the offensive whenever someone says, "you can find gypsum everywhere in any garden centre, Home Depot, etc.
It's just plain wrong.

Have you purchased these bags before MYSTIQUE? Curious the quality as well as the micron size of the filters.

There is also Efston Science for your petri dishes and other agar supplies. I don't know about the online ordering, but it is a brick-and-mortar store you can just walk in to to buy your agar supplies if you don't want to do any ordering over the internet. The store is located right in Toronto.

Hey guys, anyone know where I can get some cheap Dri-Z-Air or other desiccant in the 6-oh-4 area? I don't wanna have to dish out a twenty for a 60oz jug of that shit. Better yet, anyone know where I can get some cheap epsom salt? That shit (thanks to the magic of chemistry) is reusable.

You could find epsom salts at any pharmacy for your gourmet mushroom drying needs. As well Silica Gel kitty littler, unscented, look at the ingredients. You are looking for the only ingredient to be Silica Gel.

I got all my jars from Canadian Tire. They are 250ml Wide Mouth. I also got a Styrofoam cooler there to use as an incubator. I got my brown rice flour from Pete's Frootique in Halifax. But most people just use brown rice and grind it up. You can get that mostly anywhere. There is a hydroponics and head shop in Halifax called Sweet Leaf where you can but spore syringes there. They are $55 though, and the buddy didn't know what kind they were when i asked. So I ordered some online from Sporepod. The savings was worth the wait.

WBS
The walmart here only has WBS with Peanuts and/or mineral oil. I tried using the walmart brand it had both peanuts and mineral oil, but no corn. My GLC and MS would not grow out on it. Nothing.
So I went to Zellers, forgot all about them. Really cheap WBS with cracked corn, no peanuts or mineral oil. So there's one more for the list Zellers
Not sure what else they carry but they do have a large garden center along with lots of variety in tubs, I believe I also saw a PC there.

Added the last few suggestions to the list. Thanks everyone! I have been busy with life this week and have not been around all that much but that does not mean my projects are on hold.
Got some money together to buy wood and construction supplies for my flow hood, hope that I finish it up over the next few weeks when I have time. Has been a slow process thus far but I hope my documenting it on here helps someone out in the future.
Hope everyone is doing well!

But it looks like its been discontinued. . .
When I was looking for that I ended up finding a peat moss/coir combination. Comes in a brick, all tan-coloured and fibery and stuff, looks more like coir than peat moss to me.
I haven't tried it as a bulk substrate yet but it works great for plants.
Other stuff I got from Canadian Tire; -Verm -Red Ribbon WBS (works great, no preservatives or anything) -250ml mason jars -1L/quart jars -Manure (not sure if steer or sheep work with mushrooms, haven't gotten far enough to spawn to bulk, but good for plants)
On Friday I'm going to Early's Farm and Garden centre to get some cattle gloves to replace the kitchen ones on my glovebox since thye keep breaking the silicone seal around them. I'll post if I find any other stuff conducive to growing mushroom.

That last time I was in my local store they had replaced the garden aisle with Christmas ornaments and other holiday crap. I was able to track down two bales of coir at the far end of the store, all the remaining gardening stuff was put into a couple shopping carts off to the side.
I picked up the last two bales of coir and last two bags of verm they had in stock. Here's to hoping it's enough to last me until spring!

I been looking for food-grade agar (not counting the desert-agar with the sugar added), and all I found is some small tiny bags of agar flakes for $8.99 at Goodness Me health food stores!!!! WTF?!?!?!
Seriously, anyone can point me to some Asian store that sells just agar without the sugar in some city in the golden horseshoe West of Toronto that doesn't cost $8.99 for a tiny bag?

Agar flakes were I am cost about $9-10 for a 28G package, highway robbery in my opinion. The best deal I have been able to find so far is below: http://well.ca/products/now-foods-agar-powder_19713.html
2 OZ bottles, $9.65 and its already powdered. Not to mention free shipping. Prolly not what you are looking for but thought I would mention it.

I just had Nutter's Bulk Foods order in a huge bag of Organic Rye Berries for me, they said it should be in next week and should cost around $35 or so. They carry the small bags of Bob's Red Mill organic rye berries as well, guess it would work if you needed some in a pinch.
I had an experience with WBS the other night that made me vow to never touch the stuff again. Can't wait to start using the rye berries for spawn instead.

Well it was a combination of my own fault (soaked the WBS too long) and having a tiny kitchen and utensils that suck for WBS prep. A small kitchen can be very frustrating to prep WBS in, I was attempting to prep 7 quarts worth of WBS and the limited amount of space I have was just getting to me.
That and I despise the smell of fermented WBS. I can't imagine fermented rye berries smell much better, but as long as they don't smell exactly the same as WBS then I'll be a happy camper.
I am about ready to throw the rest of my WBS to the birds and go forward with rye berries once I get them. In the meantime I have been experimenting with rye grass seed and it has worked out well so far. Grass seed is on sale this time of year anyways so it still makes cheap spawn.

I wish you good luck with your endeavors! I myself have never worked with rye, or rye grass seed for that matter. Iv been lucky with WBS I guess I found my own style of prepping WBS and it works good for me.
I am interested in moving to rye berries in the future we shall see how it goes.

I use WBS because it's available in my area.
I've tried RGS once and wasn't happy with the results plus the supplier is way North of my location.
I have yet to locate Rye Barries. When I ask the suppliers if they carry Rye Barries they look at me the same way as all the garden suppliers do when I ask for gypsum.

I have had the exact same problem. WBS has treated me good so far, but I would like to eventually try out Rye berries. If I ever find a feed mill or the like that carries any at a good price ill let you know brother.

Just use the Bulk Barn variety of "Wheat Berries", aka "Wheat Kernels" -item #1544 at your local Bulk Barn.
I don't think there is any big difference between "rye berries" and "wheat berries" when it comes to mushrooms.

I don't use calcium carbonate personally but I think you might find it at home brewery stores.
Whenever I case I use:
50% Peat 50% Vermiculite 1 tablespoon of Drywall Gypsum (calcium sulfate) (more depending on the amount you're making) Water - enough to bring to field capacity

Sorry guys, I know this is Off Topic but wanted to shine some attention on Edible Wedge packs I have up for trade in the market.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13474281
They contain the following wedges:
1 - Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus) RR Strain 2 - Fungi Perfecti ? Shiitake http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13426489 3 - Hen of the Woods (Grifola frondosa) ?
Have an extra wedge of Grifola frondosa if you want to send it on to a friend.
I am trying to trade for materials/postage so I can continue to give away free genetics to those who want them. PM me if interested or post in the marketplace!
Thanks guys!

To all my fellow Canadians! I made a post in the marketplace to give away some Edible wedges to Canadian members. If this interests you make a post or PM me your mailing address. This was made possible by a few very generous members who have offered to send me postage to help in the cost of spreading genetics around to everyone!

Firstly, I must commend EvilMushroom666 for the effort put into compiling this awesome resource for Canadians. Fantastic!
My name is Ryan and I am the founder of JerryPoo.com. Although I am based out of the U.S., I am pleased to let you know that I do ship to Canada for VERY reasonable rates. As of right now, Canadian residents are charged a flat shipping fee on all products with NO EXTRA CHARGES (NO TAXES... I incur these costs myself). I am currently working on getting a sponsorship position here at the Shroomery.
JerryPoo.com specializes in composted, exotic zoo-manures used in bulk substrates. Our zoo-manure blend is composed of composted Elephant, Hippo, Rhino, and Zebra dung. This diverse blend of composted manure is extremely rich in nutrients, making it the ideal choice for mushroom cultivation.
I also offer pre-pasteurized casing mixes, autoclavable spawn bags, and other products.
Peace, Ryan

As long as we are going that way "Agri Tel" birdseed from Walmart sucks too. After you soak it anything that isn't porridge is floaters or black sunflower seeds.
I've cut back on the soak and upped the drying time but colonization is ridiculously slow.
Adding verm helps but all in all crap seed.....looking for "Rye berries" now. Shouldn't be too hard lots of country out here.

I found a place that makes Maple baseball bats locally... They also do general wood working as well. Saw all the shavings/dust. Asked if I could had some, and walked away with three HUGE clear garbage bags of hardwood shavings... Untreated, no melamine etc...

Local yes,
They are used to fuel pellet burning stoves and are usually between $4.50-7 for a 40Lb bag. The average price is $5-6 dollars per bag, less when on sale and more randomly at little ma and pa hardware stores. What you are looking for is HARDWOOD fuel pellets, with that listed as the primary ingredient. "100% pure hardwood fuel pellets". I have not personally worked with them yet, but as I have said I have some jars in the PC right now waiting for some Reishi wedges.
Apparently you mix slowly with water until you have brought it upto field capacity, before loading into filter patch bags and PCing. You could supplement it as well with many different things from my understanding. Searching the forums a bit will give you tons of useful information on supplementing your "sawdust". Good luck!

I try to avoid cracked corn and other cracked/crushed seed blends. I find it gets too 'thick' and starchy after the soak.

Had a few wet jars smear a bit. Rinsed the next batch a few times more and tweaked the water content and it was fine, great actually.

I think I'm going to follow the local tree service around for a day and see what the have to offer. I'll put some logs in my basements mud room for three weeks and then inoculate them...

You mean clear corn syrup?
I've used the Crown clear corn syrup for LC's and I didn't like it. Honey was better but malt is the best I find.

I'm pretty sure you can only link to sponsors if it is a product sold by them. Lots of sponsors will send spores into Canada.

Gloves and alc pads cost very little when purchased in bulk. The fact of the matter is they are not a sponsor and do not pay to advertise on The Shroomery. When you deal with a shroomery sponsor you are in essence supporting the shroomery as well as getting guaranteed customer service, along with someone to contact if things go wrong.
Different strokes for different folks but try to keep non sponsor talk to a minimum.

I just wanted to say that if you're looking for agar, I would strongly recommend bulkfoods.com.
I ordered 1.25 lbs of agar yesterday around 3:30 PM and it came before noon today (less than 20 hours from ordering!). That's the fastest I've ever had something ordered, prepared, and shipped to me, and I've been buying things online for years. Plus, their agar is cheaper than the sites suggested in the first post. With shipping, it cost me about 7 cents per gram of agar (at the amount I bought), compared to almost 17 cents per gram for agar from well.ca, without shipping. It ships out of Ohio, so this is good for everyone, not just us Canucks.
They also have hyrdated lime; good for balancing ph in casings (if you use them), or DMT extractions using a certain tek.
Also giving EvilMushroom 5 shrooms for starting and maintaining this thread. It's crucial, and I'm glad I could contribute something.

Shipping was on the steep side, $10. It was sent via UPS and there were no charges at the door. Like I said though, it was ridiculously fast, and even with shipping, it's still cheaper per-gram than Well.ca.
P.S. there was very little difference between the cost of shipping 3oz and 20oz of agar, maybe a few cents. Might as well stock up with the larger quantity.

I spent some time today trying to get a good deal on some grain for grain spawn. I first called around about WBS and of course the selection around is limited as it tends to be a seasonal item. Only thing I could find without cracked corn and grain chips was scotts premium finch seed on sale for $9.99 for a 8lb bag. I have used this WBS before and it is very nice to work with. I do believe it is a mix of millet, milo and nijer seed.
I also called 3 different feed mills around my town and not one single place had any type of grain usable for mushroom spawn. I am very surprised by this.
Having wanted to switch to rye or wheat berries for some time I thought I would head over to the bulk barn and see what the deal was.
As someone had mentioned earlier Bulk Barn in Canada sells "Hard Wheat Kernels" which are wheat berries. Here is what I found out:
Hard Wheat Kernels - $2.40 / KG $1.09 / LB 25KG bag = $60 + 10% off for buying sealed bag = $54
I went ahead and purchased 5.625 Kg - 12.4Lbs at a cost of $13.50

This will allow me to get my feet wet with wheat berries, but I am still looking for a cheaper source.
Hope this helps someone out, I will add it to the first post.

Last night I choose to prepare 2.2Kg of wheat berries to get my feet wet so to speak. I first rinsed all the dust and other particles off the wheat with a few runs of filling and draining, before leaving to soak for 6 hours. After the 6 hour soak I placed the pot on the stove and brought to a simmer watching the grain carefully.
When the grain was hydrated I took the pot off the stove and drained off excess water before placing the wheat on a baking tray to cool. Once the wheat was dry on the outside I loaded into jars and PCed. All in all I think I much prefer wheat to WBS so far...if it was just a tad bit cheaper I would be set.
2.2Kg made 7L(Qt) jars and 2 small quarter pint tupperware containers.
Making 7L jars of spawn cost me roughly $5 which is to much to pay in my opinion. I will keep looking at feed mills and stores to see if I can find some rye or wheat berries cheaper. Hope this helps someone out in the future!

You could use Wheat Berries as GRAIN spawn to later inoculate a bulk substrate for a mono tub. Yes.

I have a couple questions if ya have the time to answer?
1.after the soak for 6hrs you simmered, how long was the simmer? 2.how did ya come to the conclusion they were hydrated enough? 3.how does one tell if they are dry enough to place into jars for inoculation? the toilet paper test?(like in RR vidz) I just want to get this right so I don't mess things up or get to many contams, plan to do 10 1-liters(quart) jars to one syringe(10ml)for one mono tub, not sure if that ratio is good for one mono tub ?

1. The simmer was about 20-30 minutes. 2. When the kernels are easily broken between your finger nails but are not mush. Once you do it a few times you can easily tell when its ready. 3. Toilet paper test is a good method to use 4. I do not grow actives so I have no idea about a proper mono tub for them. I would suggest searching the forums for that information as it will not be hard to find. A good spawn ratio for cube spawn to bulk is usually 1:4.

You can buy an alcohol lamp online at many of the lab supply companies listed in the original post. You could also look into making your own.
Personally for safety and ease of use I prefer a propane torch.

Propane torch works great i use it all the time i have 3-5 torch heads so this makes it easy for me to find a slow low burner torch head for sterilizing
-lighters seem barbaric considering you have to light it up with hand after each jar - propane torch generally has a nob that allows for accurate flame adjustments & comes in many different options vertical and horizontal & expensive adjustable ones
- Becareful some models come with simple on and off settings & or a built lock switch or button -For most these are useless and uneconomical as the propane is used up 2-5x faster -for most uses u only need a low to mid high temp adjusting to your needs
but ya aside from a little bulky i think it will work good on a low burn - the time to sterilize will definitely be reduced compared to most devices used
-maybe add Propane Torch to the list of things as a alternative to lighter/alcohol lamp its more locally available and works just as good
Thanks again EvilMushroom666 Saved me some $$

Propane torch all the way. No soot, adjustable and makes anything red hot in about a second. You can't spill or break it either. You do have to watch it when it's on but I don't consider it any more dangerous than a glass bottle filled with flammable liquid and set on fire...on purpose. To hell with soot. Burnt thumbs..
Why use a lighter?

I prefer the Fat Boy propane tanks with whatever soldering nozzle you have kicking around. They have a wider base so are a bit more sturdy I find.
One 17OZ tank costs me $5 and change and seems to still have a fair bit left even after all these months of use. Cannot go wrong IMO.

Iv played with a few different brands of syrups and have not really cared for any of them. If I am making a sugar based LC I tend to lean towards the LME/Dex recipes after being turned onto them by Hamloaf. Has not steered me wrong and is very consistent in results.

Im not bashing the method just stating personal preference
I got a 500G bag of LME for 5 dollars and change down at a brew your own store. I place a small amount in an air/water tight container for immediate use and then the rest in a large air/water tight container until I need a refill. Iv been using the same bag of LME for close to a year now and easily have 300 Grams left.

Then I'm gonna go out and buy some light malt. screw it, anyone have some light malt to trade?

I heading out tomorrow to officially buy the wheat kernels, and my one big question is, can I just use the wheat kernels as a single substrate why I'm asking is that I typed in wheat berries aka. wheat kernels into the search area and I found several wheat berries substrate listings and found I need to add several other items such as this tek http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12813941#12813941I bought a new PC yesterday, have bricks of coir and verm, coffee grounds will easy to get ! lets say I'm down to the last few items on my list for the bulk mono tub style. I'm asking because there is so much info that at times it gets a lil confusing as I picked the best ones for my mono tub style and coir mixture ! thank you in advance !

Ignore that link
What you will be doing is SPAWNING your colonized grain to a bulk substrate. Look up Damions Coir TEK and that is all you need to know my friend.
Some people mix grains but if you can get rye or wheat berries they make the best grain spawn so why would you mix them with anything?

Looks like I jumped the gun on this one. After waiting several months and calling back several times, Nutter's was unable to order in a bag of organic rye berries.
My next stop will be at some local grain mills to see if I can track down a decent deal on some rye berries. I picked up a few bags of grass seed a couple months ago when department stores were clearing out their seasonal products. So far grass seed has been treating me well but I'd like to move on to rye berries at some point.

I've found the place to get Vicks V5100 humidifier in Montreal ( probably all in Canada too)
Zellers ... but it's not all the Zellers that have it. They should own a pharmacy.
It's not Zellers itselfs that have it... it's on the pharmacy (drogstore you said in English !!!)

Thought on sargentwelch.ca - I placed an order on the 19th, and it still hasn't invoiced/shipped. I'm calling tomorrow to cancel it, I'm sick of waiting. I'll be putting an order in with prolab instead. Hopefully just an issue with my order and not standard practise for them.
1 roll of parafilm, 2 sleeves of 25 2-section petris, a pack of scalpel blades & #4 scalpel handle.

I have never dealt with sargentwelch.ca, thanks for the heads up tho. I personally use prolab for most lab supplies(Besides trades in the marketplace) and have no complaints. They are a bit pricey overall I must say, but so far everything I have ordered from them has been quality. Shipping is usually $14 from QC to ON, might be more to out your way.

The order I prepped last night was $12.90 or some such in shipping. Total order cost of $71.41, which is decent for that. Indigo instruments is dirt cheap for the scalpels, but another $10 shipping eats up the difference easily.
EDIT: I just got off the phone with sargentwelch, and after the agent not being able to find my order, and then finally finding it in some "other system" that it "shouldn't be in", she told me it was shipped yesterday. A little sketchy for my taste, but if it's actually shipped...cool. Otherwise I'll be calling back in a few days if no charges have shown up on the billing CC. Next order will be done through prolab.

Oh crap man, I haven't used a scalpel in years!
I just use the tip of a syringe needle. There are about a hundred of them within 3 feet of me, they have a decent edge for cutting agar, they make a perfect tool for getting mycelium out of test tubes, they are like 10 cents each, they poke into agar wedges and are great to move them, you can scrape spores off prints with them, they sterilize in about 3 seconds with a propane torch, they are perfect for taking inner mushroom tissue samples (I have taken clones from 4 millimeter enokie caps!) and a syringe body makes a great handle.
I'll never use a scalpel again.

I purchase my scalpels and blades down at the tractor supply company and they usually run 5-10 dollars for a handle and another 5-10 for 10 sterile blades. I still have 7-8 packaged blades I have not used and I recon they will last me a good long time. Only time I will need more in the near future is if I choose to switch blade styles.

Not to be a negative nilly, but I just got my invoice for sargentwelch.ca.
$64.08 was the cost of my order, with "$8 estimated shipping" (which I figured should end up being about $15). In the end I was charged $28.81 shipping + $3.46 HST. This company ships from their mother company in the USA. They'll ship it to you DHL ground, and it's going to cost you a mint. It also took them 12 days (7 business days) to process and ship my order, which is pretty ridiculous.
I would have preferred to order from sargentwelch.com, and gone to the US to pick up my order, and saved $30 in the process. To sum up - I would personally advise against making a purchase from sargentwelch.ca if you are in Canada. The only advantage I see (which I don't recall where else I found them, but not at prolabscientific) is that they have 3 and 4-section petris.

Thank you for sharing that with us! Its good to know as part of my reason of making this supplies thread was to help Canadians avoid the shipping and duties cost from ordering from the states.
I will add a note to the main thread under that supplier to warn others who may purchase from them about there business and shipping practices.
Sorry you had to find out the hard way brother.

Yeah any business located in the geographical anus of north america with a hotmail account is probably legit. I've been in Manitoba where they work out of, I'm betting the cops killed them. Manitoba police are positively militant.
He started a biz based on a class 3 controlled substance inside Canada...I'll eat my flow bench if he comes back.
Don't get me wrong, I love cops and Winnipeg is the murder capitol of Canada but I always carried a knife or a gun there. Funny story, I got a wonderful hardwood bedroom set from a cop from Winnipeg...Well I actually got it from his family, he ate his gun in front of it and I guess they didn't want it around. Looks great but the blood stains on top are kinda creepy. They got them out of the finished surfaces but the top was unfinished and it has a bit of a splatter problem.
Anyway, like I said Manitoba cops are wound kinda tight. But they do a really good job.

I can help you too Traikun. "WB" is wild Blewit (found by me, isolated by me), "K" is King Oyster. All others are as labled. RR's Lion mane is a creepy good performer, my only complaint would be it pins TOO easy.

Awesome peterthinks! The blewit is most interesting. I have TONS of stuff to do once I get my dishes and get my agar poured, so I'm going to have to hold off on acquiring more edibles for the time being. Once I trudge some, I'll you.

I'm sending out some supply's today and did a price comparison. If you can keep the package 2cm or less it becomes a letter which will be 1/4 of the price of a parcel the same thickness. So your better off sending 3 letters at 2cm thick than a parcel that is 6cm thick. Here is what Canada post has says about the size of letters. This is shipping within Canada only.
Letter Select letter if you are mailing documents, cards or small packages that are within the following dimensions: Length: Minimum - 14 cm (5.51 in.), Maximum - 38 cm (14.96 in.) Width: Minimum - 9 cm (3.54 in.), Maximum - 27 cm (10.63 in.) Height: Minimum - 0.018 cm (0.007 in.), Maximum - 2 cm (0.78 in.) Weight: Maximum - 500 g (1.1 lb.) Note: Items containing goods or anything of value cannot be sent as letters to U.S. or international destinations.
Just a JFYI if you like to trade and have to ship items. Canada post has an online option called Ship-in-a-Click.

This is what he said...

Please consider that you could buy a larger quantity from me, say 1000 3TL for $350 and distribute them yourself. That’s much better than 5% and I don’t have to keep track. 5% is quite small for me on some things and quite large on others. I am a one man show maintaining 5 acres with over 100 fruit trees, market garden, beehives, and a sizeable spawn making and mushroom supplies business. Prices may change as my inventory from bulk purchases runs out. Everything that takes time costs $$ and/or stress.

What size dowels did you order from this site pepper?:
http://www.woodparts.ca/DOWELPINS.HTML
I want to try my hand at making plug spawn for the spring, but I am not 100% sure what would be a good size.

I went with the 5/16 X 1 1/4 size but I see Bill's list has 1/4 X 3/4. So I would save some money and go with 1/4 X 1 dowels. When I buy more they will be the 1/4 X 1 size.

From bill or wood parts? It looks like I could get 2000 dowels for about $25 plus shipping from woodparts. Maybe use there 1/4 X 1" dowels.
I know you have made dowel spawn using the woodparts dowels, what were your experiences with them?

Just wanted to add for people looking for good deals on supplies like coir, verm and alot of other stuff. Check your local papers for horticultualists expos and reptile expos. Both of these communities use much of the same supplies as us. I bought some massive coir blocks (marked as 85 litre blocks) for $7.99. Great deal at a local reptile show. From a frog breeder. Also a local horticulturalist expo sells verm. so cheap it's crazy! So check out these options most major cities and many smaller cities in Canada have these expos every 3-4 months or so. MM

Your best bet is to go local. Get out your phone book, or use google to find local feed mills. Call as many as possible and shop around to get the best possible price.
I had to call 7 different local feed mills and eventually found a place an hour or so away that sold 55lb bags of WHEAT for $27 CDN no tax. No one around my parts carries rye at all, wheat kernels are a good alternative.
Works out that I pay 49 cents a lb when I purchase wheat kernels this way.
Iv had no complaints so far with wheat kernels.

$1.09 a lb for wheat kernels at the bulk barn usually.
It is 100% in your best interest to go and find a bulk source and pay 49 cents a lb.
If you look hard enough you will be able to find some I bet. Start local and then branch out as needed.

If you're in the lower mainland of BC, then Otter Coop in Langley carries rye berries. They're in the feed shop and they're called "fall rye". 20kg (or 25?) for $16.50. Martini let me onto this.

Use yellowpages.ca ! Search in the laboratory equipment & supplies
Here's a fast results page I've found for you CLICK HERE
Enter the city and the province into the search box. Exemple: (Vancover, BC)
Also on the left you have other options (ideas) where to look for... like veterinarians !

Found another good location to pick up mason jars.
Rona
http://www.rona.ca/shop/~jars-regular-mason-jars-consumer-39885_!mason-jars_shop
The trick is to check to telephone a Rona store and see if they have any stock in the store. If they don't you just have to stop in to the customer service desk and tell them how many cases you want them to ship in.
They generally will ask for a small deposit etc...and will have them there in two or three days.
Case of 12 L jars goes for just $9.89
Also horse poo.
I located a horse farm near by and just talked to the owner. He was more than pleased to have me haul away as much horse poo from his barn yard.
Which is pretty sweet. The horses tended over the year to stand by the roadside gate over the past few years and just poo there. There is a layer of great composted poo there about 10 inches deep.

Need 140 CC Syringes with 2" Needles.
HELP!
I have searched, I and I have searched and have been unable to find a good source to get one.
I've seen the Catheter type on line but did not see any needles for it.
I'm sure others have had the same problem and found solutions.
I don't want to have to poke a spawn bag 15 different times with a 10ml to get it ic.
I've tried farm suppliers, vets, drug stores, medical suppliers.
Can anyone point me in a good direction?
links?
advice?
I'm in the Oshawa, On area

Iv personally never seen them that big, you might have a really hard time finding something that will work out that does not cost $100+.
You can use something along these lines:
http://www.tscstores.com/stage/mainhome.php#loadFG_226984
They are used to inoculate large amounts of animals with vaccines and boosters, I do know they come bigger then that but they start to get REALLY expensive. Also note you can adjust the amount of liquid that is injected per squeeze of the handle from 1-5cc.

You are quite welcome for the tip on where to buy it. It took a long time to finally track down a supply in the whole region. I probably searched a radius of 75 miles.
Plus if anyone needs a supply of "Organic horse manure" hpoo" I can help them out.
If you wish to email me I can arrange to send some out. I figure I can just seal a bag of it and probably get away with mailing it. Depending on the quantity that you need.
Here is my ad that I posed on Kijiji

There are rye berried to be found in toronto. It took me forever to find a place. Strictly Bulk its at pape and danforth(4-5 stores from the NW corner) in toronto. Ill probably kill myself for posting this cause ill have issues getting it cause all you toronto shroomerites will buy it before i get there. They will order you 25 lb bags for a discount too.
There is also a place at hwy 50 and queen st(Brampton) that sells manure and straw.
Also the link posted for spawn bags from south east mushrooms is great. Great service to canadians. I have used him for a couple of years for all my bags.
This is a little off topic but im having problems finding canadian products to make DMT from. Ive tried several types of camping fuel and they all have extra stuff in them thats ruining my stuff. That or the lye im using isnt working. So if your canadian and manged to make DMT could you please show me what you used? Ive went thru 500g of MHRB with horrible results

Just added two links to help people from Ontario find rye berries.
They are under the Rye Berries/Grain section under online suppliers.
UG: Thanks for the info brother, as far as your other question might I suggest posting over in the psycadelic experience forum? I am sure someone over there could help you out better then in this thread.

I have gotten several reports from a few different members about syringes from THC in Toronto being un viable when viewed under a microscope.
For this reason I have removed them from the list.

I first started with 5 syringes from THC and had absolutely no issues with them

Apparently things have changed, either way Active spores in Canada are for microscopy purposes only, and the spores offered by that store have been examined under a microscope and have proven to not be viable in a few separate occasions. I assume it has something to do with having pre-made syringes and not making them to order as many of the Shroomery sponsors do.
Perhaps they do not FIFO(First In First Out) there stock so people are getting syringes past there prime. Either way a Shroomery sponsor will be better able to help you with all your microscopy needs.

I just got back from voting, and I URGE all you Canadians to get out today and VOTE! If the conservatives get into power within 100 days they will pass the S-10 bill and hundreds of thousands of Canadians will become criminals overnight. The mandatory minimum style war on drugs is NOT welcome here in Canada, and I urge everyone to get out today and vote.
EVERY VOTE COUNTS.

What a shame, a majority conservative government! If this were medieval times, the conservative's would be the equivalent of placing a Witch hunter at the head of our country.

He is an evangelical christian...so your really not all that far off brother. Fact of the matter is the next four years are going to be very dark and trying, everyone needs to be active in the community as far as marijuana reform goes, and be smart about it. Be safe, be careful and perhaps in another 4 years after harpers tyrannical rule is over we can re-group and pick up the pieces.
I have always been proud to be Canadian, but at this moment I am disgusted that the masses of Canada have voted for this idiot who will be making a huge percentage of the Canadian public into criminals almost over night.

Deathblade: If worse comes to worse order the batch and trade off the extra's on the Marketplace for items you need. I know syringe filters are usually a hot item and move fast.

Call as many feed stores and mills in your area as possible, someone is likely to stock rye or hard wheat kernels for around $25-30 per 55lb bag. This is a much better deal anyway, the bulk barn sells wheat kernels for $1.09 per lb, when purchased in bulk you get them for around .49 cents per lb.

I personally like wheat kernels over WBS. I have yet to find a cheap, clean WBS mix that does not include cracked corn. When I prepare lets say 16 1L jars of WBS I spend a fair bit of time rinsing the dirt of before the soak, and then a fair amount of time drying after the soak and simmer.
With hard wheat I easily save 1-2 hours in prep time per run, it is clean right out of the bag, only requires one rinse, is uniform, dries quickly and evenly after the simmer, and is just all around easier to work with IMO.
If I ever find cheap WBS that looks clean and does not include cracked corn I will grab 200lbs, do not get me wrong, but until then I much prefer sticking to wheat.

Hey man, if anyone can point me to wheat/rye kernels in the National Capital Region, I would be very happy. None of my Feed N Seeds carry it... Though I asked for Rye before, maybe I can call for Wheat Kernels?
I find the "Morning Song" from Scotts to be a good WBS with a very low cracked corn content. I also just fill the WBS tub with water, scoop the floaters, stir so the dirt gets in the water. Then I dump out the water.
The seed is clean enough at that point that I can do the Foo Man's WBS Prep Tek straight into the 5 gallon tub of rinsed seed.

Asking for wheat kernels will be your best bet. I had to call a LOT of feed mills and suppliers before I found what I needed, it may take a bit of work but is worth it in the end. Here are a few links that may help you find a supplier:
http://www.kashruthcouncilofcanada.ca/en/20070
If you find a whole foods near you they can order in bags of wheat and rye kernels, although I think they are a bit more expensive.

Ive had sucess asking smaller bulk food places to order me rye kernels. I had to order min 50lbs but that can be easy to use up quickly. I spent quite some time on the phone before I was able to hunt down a place to get them.
