Wow, was this mostly from a fog drip or have you guys had some rain? Nice find either way!

Hmm nice. I was just wandering through the back yard wondering when they would begin fruiting. I will have to go have a look around this week.

oh also, that spot is over 800 feet up. I think it's going to take another week or two for lower spots. I mean the night time temps are just barely getting low enough

San Mateo at +/- 5 feet of sea level.
In ice plant, well irrigated. It's been very warm during the days (80 degrees plus for the last couple days) and into the low/mid 50s at night.

great to get confirmation from somebody else...I know I know it seems bizarre with this heatwave, but yeah there was a few days last week where the temps dipped a little. see, this pictured here started pinning more than a week ago...between these two heatwaves
pretty much only well irrigated spots this early tho. My guess is not too much more until next week. I don't think i'm going to bother this weekend with those first couple of cyans...they're probably pretty dried by now...Next week maybe
btw, it's not unusual to have a heatwave this late..the Oakland hills firestorm in 1991 was October 20. Let's hope this is the last one of the year so the season can get good and started
we'll get queued in with the rest of the PNW soon enough, and congrats on those early finds...I know there's a lot of iceplant in San mateo...I grew up there...It's not really the iceplant tho, there's some chip debris underneath it, probably from a few years ago
btw, speaking of san mateo, county at least, I'm going to give ya'll a freebee for anybody that lives nearby because it's too far to go and check, and no, i didn't find any cyans there...BUT
there is a large swath of good old Scotts Sierra Red chips right on Highway * in Half Moon Bay right where ** runs into highway *...It's in the meridian and it's a good half mile in a couple of sections and it's new from last year
I doubt I'll be able to check it even once this year...too busy

Since these are growing litterally 500 feet from my front door, I'll at least take a walk-about every other day for the next few months. When I snatched up some of these, I noticed more than a few really robust looking pins and being in a constantly moist and cool (relative to outside ambient temps) I figure these may just be hinting at bigger things. At least I hope so.
It was a funny feeling to walk by where I had found them last year and look down and think to myself, well, there it is!

you know what you should do...stick your fingers down in there and see what's at the bottom..I mean nearby as not to dig up myclium but just see what's down there. I think somebody maybe accidentally sprayed chips in there some years ago...Like one of those neighborhood tree chippers and some of it got sprayed in there some years ago
I kind of doubt it's just ice plant by itself and just dirt down there at the bottom. I bet there's old pieces of sawdust or chips down there and it might be a good idea to put some more in next spring after the patch gets done fruiting..Otherwise it might die out after some years, cause I doubt the iceplant itself is going to feed it. I mean, I know of lots of places in san Mateo, like by the freeway that has iceplant, but there's also big areas of chips around it too. Iceplant is put there because it's a drought plant and doesn't need much water or anything else
Take your third and fourth photos for example...if you were to pull that iceplant a little further back and look at what the cyans are growing out of..Is it dead iceplant debris?..cause if it is, that would be something new. I haven't heard of that before...chips underneath, yes, iceplant alone?..nope. Iceplant can get a little barky and tree like down under, but I haven't really heard of that before and i've looked at many ice plants before
it might be kind of hard to tell what's really underneath if it's a few years old too...old pieces of ice plant bark or otherwise

I think you may be correct with the chips in the ice plant thought.
With many that I pull up, a small chunk of mycelium with very tiny chips attached come up too. The small chips are too small and too far gone to tell what they are. D. Arora (I believe) states that these things like conifer chips and there are pines nearby. It's possible that some of the trimming adds the tiny chips.
I wonder how these people that live there would feel if they came out one morning and I was running a chain saw through a couple more pine trees .

heh...it sounds like sawdust from a chipper of a neighborhood tree cutter..I've seen those things spray sawdust into gardens before..LOL

I'm coming down this weekend and will be in the Shitty proper - is it worth looking around Golden Gate Park at all?

I've always wondered about that stream of fog that comes down just north of the GG. That spot seems like it would always be moist.
