large orange mushroom clusters, SE US
    #13312759 - 10/09/10 02:53 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Here are some mushrooms that are growing near my apartment:

Here's what I can tell you:

Habitat: open grassy slope near pine trees
Gills: orange and attached
Stem: pale orange becoming bright orange near the cap. Thickness from one to 2+ cm in diameter. Inside of stem is bright orange.
Cap: 1-1 1/2" in diameter, orange, with a "nipple" on top. Some of them have orange spots around the rim.
Spore print color: just took the print so I'm not sure just yet
Bruising: none observed
Location: Southeastern US

They smell kinda good when you get up close and personal with them. They're very pretty, especially with that pink grass growing next to it. The patches are fairly large, and are attracting attention from other people in my apartment. I'm looking in my field guide to see what they might be. I know I don't have the spore print which is something I have to have for an ID request, but I'll update this post as soon as I get it. My guess is Jack O Lantern mushrooms.

-----------
Here are some new pics from today (10/10):

And of course someone felt the need to destroy one of the clusters:

These are so cool!

Thanks for the help!

No glowing from the one I picked. Maybe I should pick some more?

You need to go into a completely dark room and let your eyes adjust for 2-5 min and you should seen a faint green glow from the gills.

No, I don't know what Kuo is talking about.
I've seen them glow for myself.

Ditto!  Not bright enough to read by or navigate by, but definitely bright enough to see in a very dark room.

Yes, I brought them back from a camping trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
I showed my fiancee, and 4 members of my family and they all saw it too.

Do the mushrooms have to be a certain age or size before they glow?

Not sure, I've only collected illudens one time.
I had two mature specimens.
They were prime for collecting.
I'm guessing that the mature specimens would be best if you're trying to see them glow.

My camera batteries died before I found the ones I collected, so I had to take some pictures with my fiancee's phone.
Once I get them on the computer (I'll try to do that tomorrow), I'll post the pictures for comparison.

My specimens' caps appeared to be larger than specimens in the pictures you posted.

Did you take a spore print?

The caps are larger today, so I think I'm gonna pick a couple of those and see. I think I took those pictures before the caps were open all the way.
