1st Shiitake Grow /w Filter Bags 1

Greetings,
I just had my very first shiitake flush using bags. I only used 6 cups of total substrate, but I really whish I had filled the bag up. I imagine I could get 15+ cups in the entire bag.
Substrate: -2 parts BRF-powdered verm, soaked to field with dilute coffee + generic Home Depot sawdust. Roughly 50/50 verm / dust. -1 part generic WBS spawn
So 4 cups of bulk to 2 cups of grain spawn. Culture source was an isolation I did on agar from a spore print. Fruiting chamber is a standard shotty.
Dates: 9/01/10 - inoculation 9/14/10 - Full "visible" colonization 9/30/10 - Birthed / 5 day cold shock / dunked 10/2/10 - First pins (pinned very quickly) 10/9/10 - Harvested fruits
Total yeild was 12oz from 6c substrate, first flush:

Thanks for checking out my post!

Nice to see that starting from shiitake spores isn't as impossible, as everybody says here.

Sometimes you get lucky with spores. This is actually from an agar wedge. I had to isolate the spore print across 6 plates of agar before I became impatient enough to use it.

Holy shit! That looks like a killer strain. Congratulations! Can you elaborate on how you isolated from spores? Do you know what strain the spores came from? Maybe the guy(s) who had no luck started with a sterile strain.

I orderd the original syringe from Sporeworks. I cloned the LC enough times that I came to believe it was probably loosing potency (I'm a cheap-ass), so I printed a few (completely white prints). I lost 2 prints to contam before I had once take. I threw together a ghetto glove-box and tried to find the healthiest-looking slice of myc from each plate (like I know what to look for, lol). The method I used is in the scecond link in my signature. Just a mash-up of info collected here on the site.
As much as I would like to take credit for a killer isolation, the results really weren't that much better than the original syringe. Though I am presently under the impression that starting again from spore is like hitting the genetic reset-button, no? I tried it for fun. mostly, because I'd never worked with agar before.

Thats very cool.... and tasty too! Any idea what a cup of your wet or dry substrate weighs to get an idea of yield or BE ?

I just weighted 12c (including spawn) in a bag I have colonizing now: 3lb 12oz. Same formula.
I can't remember how to calculate BE.

BE is the ratio of dry substrate to wet mushrooms.
Congrats on getting fruiting from spores. My earlier attempts all were bunk, but lately I've had some success. None of them compare to the 100% or better BE I get from certain commercial strains, but still better than nothing. RR

Thanks. I'm gathering that I got pretty lucky. Hopefully the luck continues.
What commercial strain give you the best yields? I've only ever purchased from Sporeworks, but I'd definitely like to see the difference.

With a 60% moisture rate in your mix thats 100% BE - very good With a 75% moisture rate in your mix thats 160% BE - excellent !
example of 60%= half of 3lb 12oz = wet weight of 6 cups x 40% = dry weight of substrate wet mushrooms/dry weight x 100 = BE
Alternatively Yield = wet mushrooms/wet substrate in your case about 40%

BE is calculated by wet weight of mushrooms divided by dry substrate weight.
ex. 2.5lbs of dry sawdust yielded 2.5 lbs of wet mushrooms 2.5/2.5 = 1 = 100% BE
2.5lbs of dry sawdust yielded 3lbs of wet mushrooms 3/2.5 = 1.2 = 120% BE

Wow, thanks for the numbers. The bag I weighed is very much on the dry side. I like them dry so they colonize faster and I depend on the dunk to take care of the rest. When I squeeze the hell out of a handful, I barely hear the moisture bubble through my fingers. Never enough to drip.
