Your Preference: Distributing Writing Online or in Print?
    #13227300 - 09/21/10 02:32 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have a collection of articles whose future I am debating: either hosting them on a website, or printing them through a self-publishing company and giving it out for the minimal cost of production (in addition to encouraging sharing among friends and family).

There are various pros and cons depending on how you look at it. I almost favor the traditional print approach because, money aside, it adds character and speaks of authenticity--as opposed to casually throwing it up online, which everyone and their grandmother does with their shitty blogs. Conversely, online hosting offers more manageability and the opportunity to reach a bigger audience... assuming anyone cares to read it in the first place without having to spam and pimp myself out in other people's comment sections.

Thoughts? Curse words?

Let's change the question...

You read some really interesting stuff; it's witty and insightful. As a matter of fact, it ends up meaning something to you.

Now, is it likely you read this online or in a book you held between your hands?

I'd rather read it from a book personally.

Book. I say get it published if you can. You have some eloquent writing Arden, and I find almost all of your posts to be thought provoking. If you can't get it published then use the internet as a backup option.

Book for sure. I don't like to read any more than a few paragraphs off a computer screen, but can get lost in a book for hours on end.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I originally wanted to opt for a book but was a bit discouraged by the thought of trying to find a publisher, coupled with the copyright hurdles for any photos or art I chose to include.

Maybe it would be worthwhile to host two versions of the book, but definitely have a print copy available. I believe there are even companies that offer print-on-demand possibilities, like: http://www.lulu.com/
