Very interesting find! It does look like a Psilocybe sp., it would be great to know what it is.

Yes, while I have seen many P Cubensis and Copelandia C in the cow paddocks, I was taken by surprise to see this in a front lawn in town.

Hmmm, interesting. Save that as a dried specimen for microscopic identification.

I hope someone will come with an answer, it does somewhat resemble a young Psilocybe subaeruginosa, but it's neither the season or the habitat for it, and I'm not very familiar with other Australian psilocybes.

Definitely looks like a sub. I think there was a cyan find in Oregon this spring, so I guess it could happen.

Weird. Could it be a species that hasn't been described?
It does resemble Psilocybe subaeruginosa though...

I'd call that a sub. Weird as it may seem, but I think it's the most likely candidate.

Yes, it does look like a sub (especially the cap). I have never seen one around before and I always have my eyes on the ground. I have based this on pics of subs. The stem was quite white though, don't subs have a reddish brown stem? It bruised blue very easily after picked.

I have no idea tho as to what this is since i only could identify a ps.cyan or lib

It does look like P. subaeruginosa... but a sub in Qld? on a lawn? in spring?

When I said much earlier it look like a pic of a sub I saw, I meant Panaeolus subbalteatus. Looking now at the photos you have sent, it has many characteristics of Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Definitely not the habitat for them though. There is an organisation called the CSIRO, I could send it to them for ID. Maybe I need to think up a name? wouldn't that be great!?

The CSIRO will just throw it in the rubbish. Australian science is not interested in actives what so ever.
I'll put my hand up to do the microscopy on this specimen if Workman doesn't want it. I have experience with P. subaeruginosa here in Australia and New Zealand. I'm also familiar with P. aucklandii, P. weraroa and P. makarorae. I would be happy to look at this under the scope for you. Let me know.
Did you manage to get a print?

It dried very small and has not thrown any visible spores. I have the specimen though. Thank you for the offer for the microscopy. Shame about the CSIRO.

The CSIRO doesn't do that kind of thing anyway. Fungi identification services are usually offered by herbariums in the botanical gardens, but the Queensland Herbarium website says that they are not currently providing this service.
I don't know how you would go sending a sample of an active species oversees... so I would take up Karode's generous offer.

When I saw the photos my initial thought was that it looked alot like a young sub, but the obvious after-thought was 'In Queensland? In Spring?!'. You guys must have temps in the high 20s at the moment, right?
I'm very interested to see the results of microscopy, and what this turns out to be.

And I would defiantly eat this mushroom to test it's activity even if I was unsure (100%) what it was.
That is how confident I am that these are active.
Awesome finds by the way, OP

I agree that in this case, the bluing is a great sign. My comment was more to object to the idea that blue bruising is a universal sign. ~

i thought the only other mushroom that bruises blue is a bolete with pore gills? i meant any psilocybe looking mushroom that you are unsure about and it goes blue would be 100% sure psilocybe

I would take a shit on the mushrooms you posted and would never think about picking them

There is more chance of it being a Pan Cinct than a Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Subae's NEED very cold weather to grow, were as cincts will grow anywhere its hot and humid
I am confused.. Have we any ideas as to what it is yet? an undescribed psilocybe?

Have you tried to cultivate yet using stem buts or stems on cardboard? They are a woodlover yeah?
I'd be sooooo tempted to make up some agar and grow them spores, heck, even make a syringe and shoot up a BRF cake as well.

I have not cultivated it. That is not my thing. It would be an interesting experiment as I do not believe they are wood lovers because they grow in a lawn without any woodchips. It is very exciting to see these little beauties though.

Soon as you ready, can or are able you should spread some of that new shroom round to some Australian cultivators, me included
In my limited experience it looks like a woodlover.
The stem buts resemble subaeruginosa. The climate and location is wrong though.
Woodlovers will mostly grow on any celulose based material, inc dead grass. That lawn looks nice and thick, meaning that there will be a layer of decomposing celulose containing material between the green grass and the soil underneath. This layer is perfect for the mycelium to grow in.

Panaeolus cinctulus grows everywhere, I can't see why it wouldn't grow there. It even grows like 50 (70?) or so miles south of the north pole.

We are in the southern hemisphere so north is closer to the equator. These are growing not too far from the tropic of Capricorn. it is summer here and damn hot!

The potential of a warm weather fruiting woodlover - mindboggln
ME TOO! I would love to experiment with one of these

P. cinctulus loves hot, best time of year to find them here is summer with 90-100+ degree weather.

cool, the mystery deepens. I find it intriguing. cannot wait for the results. I should be able to get some more prints out of P. Brewinii (if it is a new species) Or P. Cinctulus. Or whatever the heck it may be. :-)

I can assure you your find is not that, those look completely different and have jet black spores. I think I recall a picture of purple spores somewhere? Or am I confused?

I will have to take a look. I am away from from home ATM. Cannot not make that distinction without having another look. From memory, the bruising is apparent when dry and some went very dark from the bruising. I do not think the were straw coloured but not bleach white. I am rambling. I will post photos when I get home. In Bris-Vegas tonight to see Roger Waters.
