PF Tek - Durapore Tape?

Okay, this is my friends second attempt to grow our beloved fungi. he has like 3 different type of spores from his past venture which turn to be a complete fail. Possibly because of overcooking the sub? Unsure but anyways the syringes are about a year or so old maybe old so not sure about viability of them.
BUT ANYWAYS
Durapore tape was used instead of the micropore tape, already pc'd them a couple days ago and nocked them yesterday. What is the success of this tape or should I just tape it off after sterilizing?
Unsure of to take the tape off because of some people say to leave it to upwards of 20% growth and some say take it off as soon as you pc.
So really not sure what to do; take the tape off? leave it on for a while? or take it off because it is not breathable?????

You shot through the tape? It's fine that way, you can leave it.

thanks for the replies, no i removed the tape and shot under it lmfao. .
So does it matter at all then if durapore tape is used aslong as it is removed after pcing?
And just to double check, only thing protecting the mixture is the dry verm barrier and the metal lid with the four noc holes?

I personally tape jars after shooting, but almost nobody does. The verm layer is your protection- this is why you don't want to handle the jars much, the verm shifts around.

No, no need. If your place is extra dusty or drafty, you can put the jars in a cupboard or a box on a shelf.

Gah! I went in a week after inoculation with my brf jars and then made the holes in the tape(micropore) bigger since the tape could not be peeled off. I was worried about the 1/4" holes.
I always hear no tape, figured the 16 gauge needle hole was not enough.
Oh well, the more you know.

4x 1/4" holes is pretty big holes. May cause drying issues, but don't worry yet, just keep it in the back of your mind.

Thanks will do, and the holes did not open that big since the tape it still there. First timer at this and well, learn learn learn. Also I made a nice knife very red and bright when I opened the holes a bit bigger so hopefully all goes well. 1 week in and 4 jars are looking really nice, the others... small and slow.
Thanks Doc
Edit: will buy a smaller drill bit next time

don't think you should replace micropore with duropore since its not exactly porous .... kinda defeats the GE bit.

I didn't drill holes in my lids, I used a nail to punch the holes, small ones about twice the diameter of the needle. We'll see how it works.

No need for tape on PF jar lids. The dry vermiculite barrier is your contaminant barrier and is all that is needed.Use tape and possibly hinder GE and also have the possibility of moisture pooling up in your jars because of lack of proper GE and end up likely getting jars contaminated by bacterial contamination.

No, that's silly. Breathable tape won't cause any of those issues. It might be unnecessary, but it's not a hazard.

Depends on how many layers you use.The more layers you use the less breathable the material will be.
Sure you can use one layer if your super paranoid but the fact of matter is that it's not needed and it's a waste of a couple bucks that could go toward some beers as you prep everything

Multiple layers of tape would be paranoid, and also not following the tek. A single layer of breathable tape, as described in the tek, is a useful (possibly excessive) tool.
My place is a contam festival. I choose to tape jars after I shoot. If you don't need to, great. I don't shoot in a glovebox, but I've sure thought about it.
I'm moving soon, the new place will be better.

I thought about building a glove box, I saw some small "personal" hepa air filters at wally world for about $100, but decided against it. I have to resist my tendency to jump into a hobby with both feet and throw silly money at it. For the personal use, one good grow a year kind of thing, I figure keep it simple.

those personal HEPA filter/fans are no substitute for a flow hood. They'll help cut down on the contaminant mold spore count already present in your home, but that's about it.
