Matsutake Mushroom Season Opens Next Week September 5, 2010 - mycentraloregon.com
The 2010 harvest season for Matsutake mushrooms opens on Tuesday, Sept. 7, on the Umpqua, Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, and Willamette national forests in Oregon. The 2010 season runs from September 7 thru November 7.
Anyone intended to sell harvested Matsutake mushrooms on National Forest lands must first purchase a commercial harvest permit. Permits cost $200 for the season, or $8 per day with a five-day minimum purchase (picking days need not be consecutive). Also available is a $100 half season permit, valid for 31 consecutive days. Harvester must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid ID in order to purchase a permit.
People planning to pick Matsutake mushrooms for personal use must first pick up a free-use permit which is good for up to 15 mushrooms per day for 10 days.
A synopsis and map are included with each permit purchase to show areas open to harvest. Currently, areas closed to picking include Crater Lake National Park, Newberry National Volcanic Monument, HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, Research Natural Areas, Wildernesses, campgrounds and other posted closed areas.
Permits are available on the Umpqua National Forest Monday through Friday during office hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the North Umpqua Ranger Station in Glide, Diamond Lake Ranger Station in Toketee, Tiller Ranger Station, and Cottage Grove Ranger Station. Arrive before 4 p.m. to start the permit process. Permits are also available at other ranger district offices of the Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, and Willamette National Forests.
The U.S. Forest Service requires commercial harvesters to have written permission from the agency to camp on any National Forest, except in camping areas designated for this purpose. A campground for harvesters has been established at Little Odell Camp near Crescent Lake, OR. Hoodoo Recreation Services will be managing the camp this year. The per-site cost for camping is $15 per night, or $450 for the two month season. Site fees include up to four persons and one vehicle per site. There are also weekly and half season rates available. Water, garbage and toilet services are provided. For more information about rates or services at Little Odell Mushroom Camp, contact Hoodoo at 541-822-3799 or www.hoodoo.com
For more information about the Matsutake mushroom program contact one of these participating Forest Service offices: Umpqua National Forest at 541-957-3255, Chemult Ranger District at 541-365-7001, Crescent Ranger District at 541-433-3200, or the Willamette National Forest at 541-225-6300.

I will also need to take a trip. I just drove through that area from northern Nevada a few days ago. Beautiful area.
