Do all wood lovers, love cardboard?

I've seen that oyster and reishi will grow well on cardboard. It led me to think about the other wood lovers(for lack of a better term, maybe digesters is more precise), and how they would do on cardboard. I'm sure most would colonise it, but will they fruit well?
Cardboard is easier/cheaper to get a hold of for me, and I wanted to know how useful its going to be to me in the future.

I believe all saprophytic mushrooms like cardboard.
I've had good experiences with Pleurotus sp., especially with the corrugated part.
You can use paper too, just make sure that any inks used are soy-based.

No, not all of them grow on cardboard.
I often clone by placing stem buds on moist cardboard. It works well for some species like Pleurotus, Stropharia, Coprinus and a few more, but not for Shiitake, Pioppino, Maitake, etc., while others like Auricularia or Flammulina grow very weak.

Perhaps. Better ask in the cultivation forum.

I've seen photos of oysters growing from toilet rolls (grain spawn down the center). Same principles?
Sorry if it's a common technique described in this forum, I'm also an interloper from mush cult

I've actually tried using toilet paper rolls with oysters, didn't have great success.
Then again, I didn't fill them with spawn, I had them full of paper...

Mine just never grew... but cultivated ones did. Weird huh? Maybe they need extra nutrients or something.

Yes. Put holes in the tub. Pasteurize your cardboard, immersing in 160 degree hot water for an hour. When cardboard cools, squeeze out excess moisture and add spawn.

I can't say this enough times, but cardboard is one of the worse possible substrates, and even worse at spawn. I can see a use for it if non-mycological types want to pick wild P cyanescens and bring them home to a chip bed in their yard, but for indoor use or for use as a replacement for agar -> grains -> sawdust, it's piss poor at best. As a substrate, newsprint is 200 times better.
a nearby city wants to give me all the cardboard collected in the recycle bins for use on my farm, but sorry, I can't grow mushrooms on it for the cost of the groceries I'd eat while doing so. I've made other offers to use mycelium to break down the cardboard for use as soil conditioner, and even livestock feed, but not for growing mushrooms on a profitable scale.

Most toilet paper is high in cotton, which is a pretty good bulk substrate material. Fill the roll with grain spawn next time and it will work better. RR

I agree with RR with one exception. "Reishi and trametes"
Reishi and Trametes do pretty good with layering of cardboard in bins. I get pretty aggressive fruitings from it. If I chop the cardboard up the fruitings are smaller and less productive. Probably because it doesn't hold moisture as well. However if you are trying to grow them for their medicinal properties I would use sawdust with optimal supplementation if needed.
Pasteurized cardboard layered with Reishi spawn. They get really fat and wide!

I like adding soaked Newspaper balls to all my bags. They add a punch!!
