Hippie is just a broad generalization.
I have long hair, listen to rock with lengthy jams, like peace and kindness, like taking psychedelics a few times a year, caring about the environment blah blah blah.. am I a hippie? Some would say yes.
I'm not barefoot, I bathe regularly, I like some heavy metal, punk, and rap, I'm not addicted to drugs, I don't spend the entire summer/whole year on the road following bands. I'm not a vegetarian... am I a hippie? Some would say no.
When people say they hate hippies, I have no idea what exactly they mean

well, i don't hate scientologists, but I would stereotype them as dumbasses. Hippies dont follow any one belief system though although they tend to be pretty new agey. Most aren't as spiritual as you might think though...unless hedonism is a valid form of spirituality

I have had friends call me a hippie. I don't look like or dress like one. Although they say I act more like one than any of the "hippie" friends we have/had(many moons ago so...).
I mean isn't it just more of a state of mind then some dude with dreads and pathwork corduroy pants.

There's a lot of hate on the shroomery for hippies. I think the actual legit, not-to-be-cool hippies are fine but I can see having a problem with the modern day wannabe's. A 60 year old hippy I can dig

I'd consider myself a hippie; I have long hair, I smoke weed constantly, I love psychedelics, I have a flaky/fluid new-age belief system, I believe in free love, I like weirding people out, I like bright flamboyant colors, I'm a pacifist, and so on and so on.
I'm totally not a hippie in a couple ways though: I shower daily, I live comfortably on my parents' good will, and I have to either be working or going to school to feel like life is worth it.
I definitely hang in hippie circles though. I know some people who are homeless by choice. Chill people.

Its very easy to start wearing sandals, listening to Grateful Dead and growing your hair, so you can start bleating on about animal rights like a sheep. But anyone that know better will tell you, You are what you stand behind! I recommend you joining the Rainbow family and beat a puppy to death with a dead cat to work up an appetite first, then eat a pile of vegetarian tofu with a little balsamic vinaigrette, followed by some more dog pornography. Then I suggest treating yourself to a black and white Chinchilla fur coat which uses about 150 animals pelts to make! Indulge yourself on these things while shooting some Methamphetamine and THEN tell us animals are not worth exploiting and fucking. As for the animal rights movement, HA.. Peta and the other god damn hippie animal zoophiles , well, give them a taste of battery farming, use them like animals, FUCK ANIMAL RIGHTS Too.. !
Ok, so Im really starting to hate hippies. Not your 60's revolution hippes mind you, but the late teens early 20 something retards that attempt to pass themselves off as hippies. With their mommies and daddies sending them off to college, And the old bitter 50 somethings that the acid hasnt worn off yet. This issue goes way beyond my hatred for Phish or anything like that. Honestly, part of my hatred for Phish comes from the patchouli infested deadhead wannabes' Now asking "what we suppose to do now Jerry is dead?' i'm not saying everyone I know is like this, but i'll put it at 90% of the alleged "young hippie" population are nearly as lost as the Miley Cyrus fans they bash on social networking sites.
I love nature, I love the outdoors, and I respect my environment. These should be universal ideas, not just those of the alleged "hippie" movement... Thats been over played like the Grateful Deads "Trucking"..
The fact is, Real hippies don't snort coke, smoke crack, or eat pills like candy, they are not up all hours of the night tossing and turning cause they have no Opiates.
They dont go around having sex with sheep, cows, dogs, cats, chicken or fish either, because this is the new rush.
Real hippies dont sit on their computers defending the rights of people that have sex with animals. While talking out the side of their necks about how much the love animals either.
Real hippies aren't shady, lying and thieving moochers who grab whatever they can when no one is looking, and expect to make it through life by not doing anything even relatively productive...
Real hippies live in regular communities and share responsibilities, instead of doing nothing and living in their parents basements.
Real hippies wouldn't want their kids to be exploited like piles of trash, taking them where they may be attacked by law enforcement. You are using your children the same way inner city drug dealers hide narcotics. Believing somehow that Leo will have pity on you cause you are with child.
You're setting an example to the Children that is ok to behave this way.
Real hippie respect local, state and federal laws. Real hippies wouldn't use their children as bullet proof vest in illegal protests and demonstrations.
Real hippies use fountain pens to change the world in court houses across America.
Real hippies wouldn't take their children to a location where they can be harmed. How can you say you love your children when your more interested in copping dope, dancing, mingling with other flea bearing people like yourself and leave your children to defend for themselves?
Real hippies don't have nappy, mite infested dreadlocks. Find me one freakin hippie in 1969 with dreadlocks, I challenge you. You're not a Rastafarian, or Indian, or Egyptian.....you're a silly upper class cracker, now take some of mommy and daddy's money and get a haircut.
Real hippies fight for causes that most alleged hippies know nothing about. They also actually take the time to read the newspaper before they open their ignorant mouths about something they know nothing about. Real hippies also protest things other than having to get a job.
Real hippies dont believe cannabis hemp alone will save the planet.
Real hippies know whats going on locally and they build their community together with everyone.
Real hippies dont bash others religion only to promote psychedelic drugs as the way to GOD.
My advice to you bums...
1.Grow up, the world will eat you alive otherwise. You'll be in your 50's, unemployed, and bitter that the world has passed you by. You'll feel cheated when the normal people you know are buying houses, getting promotions, and living happy lives. You'll blame the man, corporate society, or any other scapegoat that conveniently comes along. youll sit in the house for years defending a movement thats died years ago, and you havent traveled to a gathering in 20yrs, your just old and bitter, your not making the world a better place, we might actually see you on Horders surrounded by piles of garbage..
2. Get a haircut and take a shower. Employers can't discriminate on race, creed, color or disability.....but they sure as hell can discriminate becasue you look like a scumbag and smell like rotten cheese. Unless you've been prepared for a life of putting your nappy hair in a net and making fries, working on a farm, or standing in the cold parking cars......you might want to listen to this one carefully.
3. The world isn't fair. This ain't Disneyland kids. Life is not a movie nor a Grateful Dead concert. It is not a long strange trip! It's what you make it. Some people are blessed with everything they need at their disposal, others have to know when to take stock of what they have and what they want, and find a way to get to the destination they desire. No one is going to do it for you, you lazy shmuck.
4. Stop playing "fire on the mountain" at every damn opportunity. This has become the "free bird" of wannabe hippies. I swear if I hear this song at the tavern again I'm going to torch the place. I don't care if you added an extra guitar riff, or added another 10 minutes to the song,.......it's still the same freakin song, and you and your buddies aren't Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir.
I'm sure there's more.....but I'm just going to get more pissed off and want to slap the next wannabe treehuger I see, so I'll end it with this.
You are what you are to stand out and be accepted at the same time. This is nothing more than fitting into a group, while giving off the idea of non conformity. this is very similar to being emogoth back in the day. Now you buy Birkenstock from a multi-billion dollar corporation and drive SUV's and gas guzzling vans. When you buy into hippie culture, you are buying into a corporate sponsored image that has been worn thin for over 30 years. Find something new to spend your parents money on, you silly fucking hippie....

I think it's funny when people on a site like this try to say that the "Hippie movement" has failed or is something of the past that we should all just forget about.
This "hippie movement" or "new age movement" or whatever label you choose has done nothing but flourish. How many "straight" people do you hear talking about things like Karma, Yoga, Zen. How much of today's art and music has been influenced by those trying to seek higher consciousness. If you really think this movement has failed, you should look at what society was like before this "movement". Blacks riding in the back of busses, women not having the right to vote, nobody ever heard of yoga-now in many cities there are yoga studios on almost every corner. Many of them attended by "Christians" and yuppies. And yes, some would say that this is "fast food spiritualism" or whatever, but at least the awareness of other types of conciousness is there and available for the masses. Were it not for this movement, we might still be living in the world of Leave it to Beaver.

Well, let's see if I pass the hippie litmus test.
Hippie:
- I like going to festivals
- I like jam bands
- I like psychedelics
- My politics are left of center
- I have long hair
- I play guitar
Non-hippie:
- I eat meat
- I don't smoke pot
- I shower
- I have a job
- I suck at hackey-sack
I dunno. You tell me.

Pretty close to where I lie. Except I play Ukulele instead of guitar. Oh, and I smoke pot.

I honestly don't know a single person like that; the person you just described would either have to be 60+ years old or a total poser.
The people I call hippies aren't posers; they are people dedicated to rethinking the rules they've been raised with, fostering adamantine community bonds, educating themselves comparatively in both mainstream and occult systems of knowledge, attacking those intellectual paradigms they consider intolerably stale, taking powerful hallucinogens, embracing nature at every available opportunity, creating mind-bending art, and getting down. They do not wear tie dye, they do not say "peace maaaan" with dull grin and dazed eyes, and only a couple of them have long hair or follow a vegetarian diet. Some of them are homeless by choice, some of them live off their parents while they attend school, some of them are self-sufficient. They are anarchists and revolutionaries of the inner space, and they are ALL total badasses.
If you don't know anybody like this, I am sorry; maybe I just lucked out by living so near Berkeley.
If your label of "hippie" is applied only to those poor souls who, seeking attention, fashion their lifestyle after a forty-five-year-old stereotype held by psychotic right-wingers, then we are using very different nomenclatures.

This arguement is so washed out. There are plenty of shitty non-hippies as there are are plenty of really awesome people that might be considered hippies.
Stereotypes FTL, "hippie" bashing FTL.
