Doc_T's Efficiency Challenge

"Everybody talks about efficiency, nobody does anything about it."
So let's do something about it- let's answer the question. The idea: Do two grows, document them, compare efficiency. Repeat times N members. Collect info in one thread.
First, you have to define efficiency- any way you like. You can measure in terms of B.E., or compare the time or work involved, or measure the cost of two different substrates. Any way you like.
Then, compare two of your grows. Both must be documented on the Shroomery- but not in this thread. Link us to them. Any strain, any species, anything you like. It's your grow. (Sclerotia, if entered, will compete in their own category.)
I'm offering at least three prizes. No spores will be sent, so it's open worldwide. The actual prize thread will be in the Marketplace, but you all have time before then.
Prizes will be awarded for: Best Answer to The Question Best Overall Some Other Thing We'll See Later
At least one grow must be current- let's say started on or after 8/8/2010. The other grow can be a previous grow, as long as it's documented here.
Again, all documentation must be in other threads, not here- let's try to keep the clutter down. Use this thread to discuss the contest. We may need a separate thread when there's results.

Boxxy huh? I would be doing a lot of nodding and saying a lot of, "Uh huh"s during that date. Good thing I won't win anyways.

You might win. Compare standard pf tek with pf tek exposed to a 24/7 recording of Boxxy. Or two different lighting patterns or something. Whatever.

Thanks for correcting it for me. Don't think I'd want to ruin a grow with audio from her. But a picture in an FC may very well push up a few more shrooms...

I don't think this counts, technically its a community effort research thread.
The contest itself would be in the market place.

Don't know if this counts. It's a sclerotia grow with rye berries and different combinations of additives in each jar.
EDIT I define efficiency as how much sclerotia a jar produces in wet grams.

Well seeing as how I have a bunch of spawn jars that will be colonized soon I might as well jump in on this.
All jars for this will be WBS spawned from the same LC on the same day. Lighting comparison maybe? i.e., 20 watts vs 40 watts for the same area?
If thats not interesting, then maybe no additives to casing mix, adding gypsum, and adding coffee? Three tubs, see which does better?

I'm glad you made it a 'challenge' and not a contest, but please drop mention of prizes to stay within the forum guidelines. The advancement of the art is reward enough.
I'm currently running tests on 23 commercial shiitake strains on a variety of substrates including softwoods such as Douglas fir and Lodgepole pine, and hardwoods such as Alder, Western larch, Aspen and Birch. I'm also running the tests on organic wheat straw hoping to find a strain that will grow and fruit on it. In addition, each strain is being tested on a mix of softwood and hardwood, and each strain is being tested on a mix of softwood and straw. At least 20 substrate blocks are being made for each strain with each substrate composition. This is involving over 2,000 substrates to make it a scientifically valid test. I'm writing a paper on this for publication in the IJMM. Of course, I'll post the results here in the gourmet and medicinal forum. RR

I'll disqualify myself from the 'challenge'. I have a bigger prize in mind.
Our State Department of Natural Resources is removing over 50 billion tons of over-grown Douglas fir and pine from the national forest only 20 miles from our mushroom farm to reduce fire risk. 100 years of forest fire fighting has ruined the forest by causing it to grow so thick that when it does ignite, it makes super-fires that sterilize the ground, turning it into desert. If I can come up with a shiitake strain that grows well on what they're removing, I'll be able to set up a HUGE mushroom farm to take back the US market from the imported chinese shiitake that are polluting our grocery store shelves nationwide.
Currently, they're giving it free to a power plant that burns a ton of wood to make 9 cents worth of electricity. If I can even get a 50% biological efficiency from it, I can get half a ton of food from the same amount of wood they're getting 9 cents worth of electricity from. They'll be delivering it here instead. RR

Kinda off topic, but has your state finally figured this out about the fires? Colorado lets a lot of fires just burn, if there aren't houses- but they keep letting people build houses in pine forests.

Yeah, that's kinda intimidating.
It's clutter to discuss methodology in this thread?
