Hi all, found these today

Sorry I couldn't get any habitat shots, did not have my camera on me. I'm 99% sure these are Reishi mushrooms.. Got a question for any of you that are familiar with this sp. : - What's the best way to go about consuming these?
Any tips / suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I consume them by drying them and grinding them up in the Vitamix.

I make tea and tinctures out of them. :thumbup:

Looks like Ganoderma lucidum.

Could be G. tsugae though, check which type of wood it was growing on.

I just drank about 3.5 grams worth of reishi tea... I use a cheese grater then heat to boiling, simmer for 2 hours.
I actually enjoy the taste, I read that it would be bitter but to me it tastes... not bitter, but kinda... cardboard-like if that makes any sense. I've been grating off of a large specimen. I have a small one like the ones you have and I'm curious if there will be any noticeable difference in the tea made from it. The small ones remind me of some kind of alien, I think the heat ray from the 50's War of the Worlds. :smile:

Correct me if I am wrong, but those look a little young to be harvesting. :shrug:

Didn't see any more mature ones around and it was in an area in unfamiliar with.. So, I went ahead and snatched em up.... figured why not, since I knew I probably wouldn't be back to get them later on. Alan: They were growing straight out of the ground, poking through tons of dead leafs. I'm not sure if there was wood below the leaves, I didn't take note.
The tree's around the area were Pine and loblolly pines. I believe there were some sweet gums in the area as well.

I don't believe in "thumping" mushrooms either. I don't think tapping the top of a mushrooms cap to make the spores fall really effects the growth of mushrooms... I know alot of people who do this, I think it's kind of dumb, though.

I mean, i'm willing to bet that not even 0.01 % of all the Red Reishi musrhooms in the world are hunted & collected, if that.

It may not have an effect on the whole species, but it may have an effect on that species in your area. It's all good, I wasn't saying you did anything wrong. I just think it would be ideal to let them grow for longer. :shrug:

Yeah man, it's cool. I probably would of left them to grow if it was at a spot I was familiar with.. I found these by simply chomping through the woods. If I would of left them, I probably would of never went back.
So it's all good man. I get what you're saying, but since I don't regularly pick these I wasn't too worried about it, ya know?
