I make two holes in the top of the pod. Oh, I'd say they are a inch in size. Then I cut two pieces of rubber big enough to cover the holes. Put a screw threw the rubber pieces and cover the holes in way that the rubber slides over the holes so you can make them larger of smaller.
With this you can control the humidity. I don't cover the holes cause the pump is always on and there is always air flowing out of them.

This is my first post, so please, bear with me here, as this post will be long.
I have been attempting to cultivate musharooms for over a year now, note the keyword here..."attempting". I have been using ShroomWizards method, and frankly, I'm sick and tired of it, I've had nothing but failure AFTER failure.
Grrrr.
So, I just learned of this site not too long ago, but I've been rather busy with life, you guys know what I'm talking about..heehee. I saw this thread, and I have been filled with a RENEWED sense of hope. The thing that I can't figure out is, and what's not explained is, what do you do with the oil pan? And since the page that the oil pan can be ordered from is down, is there any alternate sources of this part? I am hoping that Magash, could provide me with some more detailed information, on the construction of this device. I need to know what every part does, and exactly what to do with it. I'm sorry if I seem like I'm rambling, but I'm trying to get as much information across to you as possible.
Can you please find it within yourself to help out a very tired, and frusterated cultivator...this device might just be the God send I was hoping for.

Uh.. i don't know exactly what you are refering to with the oil pan.
Your questions about this device are probably all answered threw that thread but since you're a frustrated cultivator, i'll try to answer briefly what you want to hear.
Well, the idea of a poor mans pod is to build a fully automated terrarium where humidity and air exchange do not need human intervention every day.
You basically use a plastic bin, a rubbermaid or something like that. Your fruits will grow in there. The geolite or perlite in the bottom are for humidification. The airpump is for air exchange. You are looking for a pump that can do at least 2 or 3 air exchange per hour. For a 68L bin, you need a pump that can throw around 3500 CC of fresh air per minute (gives around 3 air exchange/hour).
For light cycle, you simply cut the lid and cover with plastic so light can get in. Use a timer if you want an automated light cycle.
Just read the thread, it is well explained.

The original post showed a "Hydropod" which used the bell cloche and oil pan. But Myco-tek had a commercial version out there so Magash pulled that part out to avoid any copyright infringment bullshit. Just follow the pics and you'll be fine. SWIM built a microPMP (10x15x10) and works very well.

If I wanted to use this idea, would it still work if i replaced the geolite with perlite? Would it be the exact same result, or are there disadvantages?

Yeah it will work just fine. Perlite is just messy compared to geolite but it will work.
That was grown in a poor mans pod using a layer of perlite :

I found using the banking dishes at publix (the tin disposable ones) works great, just add your mix and away you go. You can find these on the same isle as cookware.

i think the lazy man's pod would be a good name for this, for that is wat it relly is, no? just a thought, babbling out loud =P. Also in a REGULAR fruiting chamber does anybody think it would be OK to use geolite instead of perlite? (This is without the air pump). Perlite is one messy sumbitch.
Sry for bringing up an old thread.

Would this setup be more beneficial than lets say a mini greenhouse setup with a cool mist humidifier?
For all of you vets out there, I was wondering which you would go for.
