Million-pill ecstasy bust leads to indictments

 A federal grand jury in Los Angeles returned an indictment Wednesday afternoon against 15 men accused of large-scale distribution of ecstasy.
Two of the men are from Orange County.
The indictments came after a seven-month investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Beverly Hills Police Department led to the seizure of more than a million tablets of ecstasy, 33 kilograms of cocaine, more than $500,000 in cash, and 21 firearms.
They also found an operating ecstasy laboratory at a stash house in the City of Industry in July.
The two key figures indicted are Jimmy Luong, 29, of Monterey Park, who is accused of running a large-scale ecstasy distribution operation, and Tony J. Barrera Jr., 37, of West Covina, who is accused of supplying Luong's organization.
When Barerra, or Big T, as he is known, was arrested last month, he had around 200,000 ecstasy pills on him, according to the indictment.
Duy Nguyen, 22, of Fountain Valley and Long Nguyen, 22, of Santa Ana, were also indicted.
Aside from the laboratory/stash house in Industry, authorities raided a second stash house in Arcadia in June, where they found 510,000 pills, and a third location where 200,000 pills were found last month, prosecutors said.
A 100-page charging document describes much of the investigation, which relied heavily on surveillance and at least seven wiretaps, rather than informants and undercover work.
In dozens of snippets of dialogue captured on the wiretaps, the defendants do not make literal references to drug sales. Instead, there are references such as "packing the stuff," "you got one-twenty," "eighteen blues and twelve yellows," and other references that investigators understood as code.
The drug trafficking charge in the indictment carries a penalty of 20-30 years in prison, depending on prior convictions.

Major ecstasy drug trafficker gets 22 years
February 7, 2012 - Associated Press
A Southern California drug trafficker who distributed more than a million ecstasy pills in just a few months has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison.
Prosecutors say 30-year-old Jimmy Luong of Monterey Park pleaded guilty last year to conspiring to distribute ecstasy and conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine at a laboratory in the City of Industry. He also pleaded guilty to an assault weapon charge.
Luong was sentenced by a Los Angeles federal judge on Monday.
Investigators say Luong was the leader of a drug-trafficking organization that distributed more than a million pills from March to July 2010. He kept the drugs at the Industry lab and an Arcadia stash house.
Luong was one of 15 men indicted in 2010. The others have pleaded guilty or been convicted.
