Small Ringed White Worms ( Please Help)
    #12976172 - 07/30/10 10:18 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hello All,

As the username implies, I have no idea (besides research) what I'm doing. I lack that veteran skill. So, to the point...

I just got my horse manure today, and as soon as I opened the box, I noticed sitting right on top in plain sight... a little white worm. Approx .5-.75 in. It has light brown rings, and flips the fuck out when you touch it. Picture should be attached, if I do this correctly (again, I'm new here). If picture is not in post, please visit "my pics" section.

I'd like to know what this worm is, and will it be harmful to the cultivation environment?

Thank you in advance for your help and insight.

I did some more research and I think this worm may actually be the larvae of the Stiletto Fly (Insecta: Diptera: Asiloidea:Therevidae). I'm not sure, but if anyone has experience with these, please let me know if I should remove all I can see, and bake to kill/sterilize the substrate?

I found a thread earlier about sterilizing substrate by baking it, but can't seem to find the thread again, and was wondering if anyone knew what temperature I should bake at? Also, heating up Horse sh*t... is this gonna make my place reek?

If its an insect the mycellium would probably kill it, don't know how fast though. If its actually a worm wait until you can fruit and remove it. Can't see the pic all that well so can't really help you.

It's expected that manure is going to be buggy.  It's a product of the outdoors.  You're going to pasteurize it before use anyway, which will take care of any wildlife.

To verify whether or not my assumption was correct, I placed the larvae into a terrarium (sealed). After a couple days, the larvae shell was on the "earth" and there was a stiletto fly buzzing around inside. Thanks for the input.
