Are my spores still good?
    #12971012 - 07/29/10 09:01 AM (1 year, 9 months ago)

I've got two sealed baggies of different strains in a drawer. It's been pretty humid and hot lately, sometimes reaching 95 degrees inside my house for several hours (11+) at a time. Opinions? :O

If it's a maybe, I'll definitely still try to see if my mushrooms will grow

Spores die at 106F I think.

and how would humidity affect it at high temperatures like this?

High humidity could be bad if you mean spore prints. Spore prints should be dry if you want them to last long. HOnestly theres no way anyone is going to be able to say what condition your spores are going to be in. The only way you can really find out is by trying them out.

As I understand it, spore solution is best kept in a cool, dark place.  That 106 degrees number is the thermal death number for mycelium, but I've never heard it applied to spores.

It probably really depends more on how long they've been sitting there.

Ultimately though, some of the spores could still be viable after years.  There's only one way to know for sure.

I'll give it a go soon then. Can't wait :datass:

oh and it's not in a solution, its just the prints (with a heck of a lot of spores.. they're falling out of the folded & taped print paper and into the baggie!)

In general, prints are said to last longer than spore solution.  Years, in proper conditions.  The high heat and humidity may have hurt the viability a little bit, but there will be thousands and thousands of spores on those prints, and ultimately you only need a small number of them to be viable.

However, the problem is that if they are moist for an extended period of time it could lead to the prints becoming more easily contaminated (thus also contaminating whatever you inoculate them with). Although the spores my be viable, they could also end up having something else with them (such as bacteria etc).

This is more along the lines of what I was trying to get to when I made the thread.

I have used spores from a syringe 10 + years old and had them germinate and fruit, though very slowly and without much volume.

They werent taken good care of, other than them being in a box that was in closets, drawers, hot houses, cold houses, rental trucks in the summertime even. Spores are pretty hearty little fuckers. Try em out!
