I happen to like English, and have learned Spanish. I also go to school with hundreds and hundreds of foreigners who have thick ass accents but understand our grammar and structure better than the locals around them.
Is that statistic your own conjecture or is there something backing it up?

Professional guesstimate, I'm trained in linguistics. I like English too, and sure lots of people learn it, and it's way easier than Chinese.
But if you speak Spanish, you already know what I mean. You spent about 30 minutes on spelling, right? Total.

Yeah you're right, so I guess my real question is why don't people care? Communication reflects SO much about the person, and people know this. The development that you are talking about shouldn't have led to laziness. People used to dab quills in ink and write long ass letters, it should have been these people who adapted to shorthand jibberish instead of the people who can type 60 words per minute at 12 years old.
Doc_T linguistics is the shit, that's cool you've been able to study it. I'd like to be fluent in a couple more languages but being that I already speak English I can communicate with a fuckton of people already so I don't have the drive that a Swedish person would.
What's cooler than knowing a language is studying how a language shapes that society, or how the society has shaped the language, I don't know enough about it to engage in any dialog. Fun stuff to read on.

As long as we are bitching about grammar, here's something I've noticed recently. It seems that many many people these days have come to think that a statement like "Jason and I" is always correct and "Jason and me" is always incorrect as people will say things like "That's okay with Jasona and I," or something similar without any clue as to the difference between a subject and an object.
Really irks me for some reason.

I always try to use proper grammar. Sometimes it gets botched when you're not paying attention, but for the most part when people can't spell simple words properly it gives the impression that they're very poorly educated. I guess the exception is IMs where no one really gives a shit, but even so I try to type in a way that reflects that my brain is actually functioning.

It really is amazing to read over journals and letters from olden times because of how sophisticated everybody seems to have been with their use of language. It is as though any one of the people who kept journals as members of the Donner party, for example, could have been a top-notch novelist from a perspective of lingual capability.
I suppose that in those times the literacy rate was a lot lower than it is today. Knowledge of how to read and write was probably something that had to be pursued in a way that today is nonexistent. If you are simply enrolled in school you are going to come away with at least a rudimentary ability to communicate through the written word, whether you care or not. In the past, those who did not care likely never learned even the rudimentary skills that we label as lazy today.

English is hard to learn as an outsider, however most of us were brought up with it as our native language. Also, different usage of there, your, and then is something they teach you in 3rd grade.

Although it bugs me too
I learned to read by five with little or no assistance and could speak above my class thereforth. My vocabulary is immense (having had a head start as such...) but some of the more complex standards (who/whom) are lost to me- usually the ones that aren't in common practice any longer.
The irony is that having an expansive vocabulary often results in gramatic incorrectness, with lots of words that sound good and work but are complete fabrications. As a result, even though my papers typically read with ease and fluidity; I am graded down on minor technicalities and such false-words regularly. It is infuriating that the evaluation of academic worth is no longer on the actual intellectual value of a piece of work but that of every nook and cranny of the proverbial grammar gestapo handbook.
I have come to the conclusion after attending three high schools, scraping through grades K-12 with minimum grades, and spending four semesters divided between two colleges that this extreme nit-picking has turned the youth of to being smart, and we are now instead pushing a very survival-centric culture where those who do not fit the (now very marginal) standardized medium simply give up and often fail to reach their potential due to the over-emphasization of a certificate society system.
I am smart enough that I will continute to zip by under the canopy, even if it takes me an extra year or so, and finally end up doing what I have discovered to satisfy me as a career. I have no doubt that through my individual pursuits and in combination with my education, I will achieve great wealth- in my eye anyway. However, it will take at least no less than five years longer than would otherwise be necessary- I already have the skills to be a service technitian, repair man, and general tinkerer today. At first upon realizing this I went into a depression months long, but I no longer resent it because I have realized the social practice I am building in college today will be priceless in ten years, as it has already proven itself to be. It just took me a bit to catch on.
Forums are a good sharpening block, even if nobody takes the time to read my drivel.

Real life/spoken mispronunciations are even better.
I've called out one person after a few times of him saying "copa-ste-dick"
I also had to convince a friend that it's longitude and latitude. He still remembered it, in his mid twenties, as the way he'd been taught, or longitude and "flatitude".

"unthaw"

But see, even though it's retarded because we have the word freeze, s' not like you wouldn't be able to understand it.

Ka duuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhah errrrr kadrrrrrrrrrrrrr
You know what else grinds my gears?
A mug, is not a glass, and a glass is not a mug, or a cup. A glass is made of glass or ceramic. A mug is is short, and has a handle. A cup is metal, plastic, styrofoam, etc. If I ask for a cup, because I'm wasted and wanting to pour myself another gin&juice, and you bring me a mug (that will never possibly keep up with my wasted-waddle with it's short little walls) or a thin glass that's going to cut my poor drunk feet when I step on it, I'm going to get 'bellig'.

I don't like hearing "re-fridge". It's either a refrigerator or a fridge in my opinion. Half-assed shortening of a word is lazy.

Because people have gotten so used to letting technology think for them that they no longer force exercise upon their brain muscle? They allow themselves to be lazy because they don't care.
Or they may not think it is that important to be so proper when texting or blogging. With the way things appear to be going, what if grammar became obsolete?
Side note: I use improper spelling and grammar on purpose some of the time and people who know me know I know better, people who don't just think I'm an imbecile and I'm okay with that.

I think its funny that people get upset about grammar when 90% of the time you can tell what some is saying by the context.
I also think u is better than you, because it is more efficient. IMO the fools are the ones who are unwilling to change, not the ones making change.
