A Trip to An Abandoned Insane Asylum [pics] * 5
    #12970361 - 07/29/10 02:09 AM (1 year, 9 months ago)

Some of you may have seen my introduction earlier, which I included some pictures of my first trip to this asylum, however, I recently made another trip for some proper photos... If you want to see the interesting parts, just click the links...

Getting off the freeway, we decide to drive past the front of the old asylum before we make our entrance to check for any activity. The seven story main hospital tower looms from the distance, an eerie site if there ever was one, the sun on it's descent in the background.

Looking past the gated entryway and "No Trespassing" signs, the grounds appear empty, as with the rest of the complex.

Parking at a nearby strip-mall, we prepare our camera, flashlights, and other materials for the walk over. The old truck entrance runs along side of an active hospital, and as there were a few hours of daylight left, we tread brush past the active building as a precaution, finally reaching another gate, tied together with metal twist ties, covered with "No Trespassing" signs.

Pathway
We begin the walk back, and slowly the road becomes more and more overgrown. Power poles run along the side, no longer holding any cables. Weeds grow tall throughout the main cracks in the pavement, and the noises of wildlife is abundant in the heavy woods on either side.

Smoke stacks
As we approach the main grounds of the old asylum, the towering smoke-stacks of the power plant loom through the trees. Other buildings are visible in the distance, but we attempt to locate an entrance.
Broken Panes
Despite many broken windows, there is shattered glass everywhere, and the thought of jumping up to a ledge and cutting open our hands does not sound appealing, leaving us to search for another entrance, however, not before poking a camera up into a window...

Unfortunately, it's well sealed with iron gates over all doors, and despite several smashed windows, we decide it's best left for another day, snapping one last photo of the building. It's a beautiful site to see nature reclaiming the land.

Continuing along the path, we walk past many buildings that despite looking interesting, in the interest of time we must pass for another day.
For Another Day

School Building
Eventually however, we find one we decide to enter. A door on the receiving dock has been left wide open, inviting us to enter. Climbing onto the dock, it becomes obvious we'll need flashlights. These buildings have been without power for some time, and natural light does only so much. With our flashlights ready, we enter.

Broken tile, pieces of the falling ceiling, and dust covers the floor. Each step brings a crunch as we begin to walk through what once served as a school building.

Hallways
More hallways...

We walk past dozens of large, empty rooms. The hallways are flooded with light from each doorway. Each room contained huge windows, lighting them up brilliantly.
The curtains - still holding on. Barely.

Some of the rooms doors are labeled still. Art rooms, activity therapy, dance. A sink in one is speckled with all sorts of colors. One finds it hard to imagine the large, empty husks of rooms once being full of easel, canvas, nurses and patients going about their business.
Speckled Sink

As we continue to explore the hallways of the old school building, one begins to notice an overabundance of bathrooms. Many, many bathrooms. You may come to the conclusion, as we did, that because most people living there would require escorts to the bathroom, keeping the travel time down was a must. Shower time, anyone?

Blue Shower

Every room showed signs of decay. Peeling paint, rotting drop-ceilings, some completely collapsed, scattered around on the floor. Some rooms showed more than others.
Contamination!

Throughout the years of it's abandonment, it is obvious the place has been visited many, many times. Unfortunately, many of these vistors do not abide by the urban explorers mantra - "Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints," and have instead taken the opportunity to break and destroy. Despite being safety glass, much of it has been shattered. Not to say it doesn't make for a neat photo.
Shattered
While some have destroyed by breaking things, others have left their mark with paint. Graffiti is found all around. Some is nice, however much of it is garbage.
Tears

The building surrounded a central courtyard, what once was a playground. As we walk to a window to peer out, we notice two coyotes in the field. Attracting their attention, they become frightened and run off, leaving the eerie playground empty once again.
Straight out of Silent Hill...

Every hallway looks the same. Desolate, in disarray, and downright creepy. Looking at it, it's truly difficult to imagine what was once brightly lit, with spotless floors, filled with noise from patients and staff.
Once No More

Many doors carried "Locked Area" signs on them. Typically staff-only areas; supply closest, kitchen areas, etc. Some doors remained locked still.
Forbidden

As we walk into a room labeled "Game Room", we find an large empty room. Devoid of anything except a padlocked cabinet (presumably one holding games), and a single book left on the floor, still in new condition, apart from some dirt on the cover.
The New Exploring American History

After flipping through some pages, we decide it is time to leave the school building and head towards the main hospital building. As we begin our walk to it, we look back along the road towards another building, noticing another group of explorers... Relieved they are but one of us, we continue our trek towards the hospital.

The towering, ominous building comes into site and anxiety levels rise. The building is both terrifying, and yet beautiful. The pathway up to the loading docks is overgrown, however we trek back to the entrance of the building. A huge, heavy metal door has been lodged against the door to prevent entry, however some former explorers gratefully pulled it back just enough for us to squeeze through, and enter into a stairway. We are met with two choices - down into the tunnels, or up into the main building.

The ground floor of the building in the elevator lobby has no windows, and as such we must rely on our flashlights and the small amount of ambient light coming in from a doorway. Walking through it, we find ourselves entering the morgue and autopsy room.

This room was a mess

Disappointingly, the autopsy/fluid draining table has been removed, and the room with the freezers is too dark for a clear picture. One is open, the tray that once kept a corpse on it left ajar.

We leave the eerie morgue and go up a flight of stairs. The sun is quickly setting and photo opportunities become more and more limited with the fading light.

Littered

Hallways are littered, and dust fills the air. We try not to breathe heavily - this place is full of asbestos. Treading on, we enter a room that appears to be a lab of sorts. The rows of gas outlets remind me of high school chemistry. Never leave a burner unattended, kids.
Gaslets

Light is fading faster and faster at this point, and we decide to traverse up one more floor. Snapping a quick photo, one can see the heavy door of a patients room left open, with but a small observation window.
Slammed Shut

At this point the sun has set, and light is draining quickly. We quickly left the way we came, and begin our walk back. On our exit, we notice two cyclists pass down a road servicing the asylum. Once we reach it, they pass again the other way, a father and a child.

Glancing futher down the way, we begin seeing teenagers crawl from the woods back onto the path - having just hidden from the cyclists. At first we see only five-six on the road, but a dozen more come crawling out of the woods, a group of 15-20. As we approach, they ask if we're cops. We laugh, and tell them the coast is clear. As we end ours, they begin their exploration into the darkness of the asylum.

There is one in my town. I have never been to it because they still have the alarm system hooked up to stop people like me from going into it.

These pictures are sweet though!

I've got one near me too.

It's pretty well know for being haunted.
I've been inside a few times
the first time being in high school,
I took pictures but none of the pictures came out

Nice bro...looks creepy and a fun explore. If i can find the photos ill upload them for you I visited a rather old cemetery dating back to the 1800's and some other known haunted buildings. When I went to St.Augustine, FL there was a ghost tour through this huge ass Ripley believe it or not building and through old cemetery which were known to be haunted. I took random pictures throughout the tour and some came out to have orbs in them and one room which was completely dark at the time in the picture came out to have what looked like red lighting bolts going around the room..with a sort of red glow to them...Ill see if i can find the pics.

Me and some friends did something like this a few years back, but we did it at night.  Was a trip seeing all the syringes and medical files scattered everywhere.

We almost got busted for trespassing actually, turns out they hire some guy to sit in his car all night to make sure nobody is trespassing.  He called the cops but they just let us go

Thanks for all the comments everyone! - I'll definitely be making more trips to this place in the future (there are ~15-20 buildings, and we only barely explored 2 floors of the main hospital).

They used to have security when the land/buildings had been bought by a developer. There were some legal issues however, and the township it's in reclaimed the land and property, and they're broke, the place is wide open.

Yeah, there were a lot of (thankfully empty) biohazard bags and syringes in the autopsy room.
Goodness knows what else we'd have found.

someone else already did

and what are you saying, splotches of paint aren't art?

As for a relic, I dunno about this one but the abandoned insane asylum was filled with heroin addicts living in the catacombs, I wouldn't exactly call these things relics, more like eye soars.

Nice pictures and captions to go with them. There isn't anything around here like that, but I might have to look harder now.

A large part of art has to do with the intentions of the creator.

I think running around with your friends shooting paint balls at each other is not going to be considered art by most people.

What you consider an eye sore is an endless canvas for photographers.
Maybe you don't appreciate photography, but the photos Zom took were beautiful and there are countless other photos just waiting to be captured. Why ruin the canvas?

These things we are debating are purely opinion and pre-conceived notions, so I don't really expecct to change your mind. I just think what your suggesting would be considered vandalism more so than art. And yes, there is a fine line between graffiti being art and being vandalism.

"one man's trash is another man's treasure"

and on the graffiti note, whenever you trespass and write something anywhere, it's vandalism in my eyes I don't care how good it is.

They weren't so much as used, as just sort of dirty/filled with disgusting things. Judging by the lack of any horrible smell, I doubt feces.

Thankfully, the location of this one is just surrounded by a lot of $200-300k subdivision homes. No junkies or fucked up things going on (apart from whatever may have occurred when the place was active.)

It's slated to be demolished sometime next year, however, the township has not even begun the process of abating (removing asbestos/lead/medical waste/everything else) which is a very time consuming and costly process.

For the most part it just seems to be a party spot for teenagers - both times I've been there we've spotted other groups, same for other friends who've gone. Walking around the grounds you'll find a lot of empty beer cans and such. I love to explore the place but I don't think I could find it as a place I'd want to party.

this is a little about the place I've crawled around in

Quote:

Back in the early 1900`s till the 30`s and 40`s near the XXXXXXX Institution there was a sanatorium made for sick children with diseases like rubella, mumps, German measles etc. Most of the children were brought there to die. The old brick building still stands near the old institution. Residents say that they can hear children crying and laughing. They are seen in the windows but only to vanish before you. XXXXXXX is now an abandoned building that is host to many different sightings. Reports of hearing former patients running around corners and down hallways to escape orderlies, and faint screams being heard form rooms where shock therapy was supposedly administered. Also sightings of a former patient who was murdered by a group of other patients with plastic utensils from the commissary walk the old courtyard.

Although I've got limited belief in superstition, the asylums built back in the 20's-30's are definitely the most creepy and terrifying in my opinion. So many treatment issues, experiments, etc. Absolutely horrible.

I don't believe ghost are the souls of the dead
my beliefs are more along the lines of residual energy and energy loops
and XXXXXX's back story fits that theory nicely
large numbers of high energy youth, scared and suffering

my friends that are actually members of ghost hunting organizations have showed me pictures from there that look like they have people standing in them.
but even if you don't believe you at least have to admit the history that went on there must have been brutal

You smell correctly, good sir. Nikon D60 w/ a 35mm f1.8 lens.

This is the old Northvile Psychiatric Hospital in Northville Michigan located at 7 mile road and haggerty. Sits on about 400 acres.

Here is a link.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northville_Psychiatric_Hospital#Northville_Regional_Psychiatric_Hospital

My question is did you ever get to Ardmore before they tore it down, or Eloise?
Edit: noticed you already named it. Also, be careful, I know a couple people that were arrested on the property. Northville is nothing you want to fuck with. They were charged with breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of property. It wasn't cheap, and involved some probation.
