Mushroom growing out of rotting hay
    #12908985 - 07/16/10 07:44 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I was out moseying about on some farm land today when I came across a pile of rotting hay. I thought about checking under and low and behold there was some dense mycelium growth. Upon further investigation I saw these growing on a nearby pile.

There are a lot of them pinning, and I mean hundreds. Any idea what this may be? I think it may be a Collybia species. I am interested in an ID for this because if it is an edible or an active, I am going to go back and harvest tomorrow morning. Thanks.

Habitat:
Corn field, horse trails, rotting hay

Gills:
They are light and hidden. I can check this again tomorrow when some open up.

Stem:
7 cm, sturdy, radial lines, red tint, somewhat hairy consistency, mostly smooth

Cap:
1-2 cm wide unopened, knobbed center, very slimy

Spore print color:
Unable to spore print because caps are closed.

Bruising:
None at the moment.

It may or may not be important to mention that this is in Delaware, on the border of Pennsylvania.

Probably a bolbitius, if so it will have a rusty brown spore print, but it may also be a psathyrella.

Agrocybe praecox is a pretty nice match, and edible. I am heading back to the spot now to harvest some fruits. Hopefully they didn't all turn to mush by now.

Okay, I see now it is definitely not Agrocybe praecox. I went back this morning and picked a couple. Most as I presumed had turned to mush and these were just about to. I forgot my camera in the field so these pictures are the best I can get. The mushrooms dried out quite a bit from being in the car for five hours, but I still got a spore print and some ok pictures. Take a look.

I think Falcon had it right with Bolbitius.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Damn it, not edible. I have about 20 very meaty soupable youngins here that I now have to put in the trash.
