Unheard Voices - A Drug War Documentary Project * 2
    #12855790 - 07/06/10 09:23 AM (1 year, 10 months ago)

****PLEASE FORWARD AND DISTRIBUTE WIDELY****

Unheard Voices Documentary Project

The Unheard Voices documentary project is seeking interviews and testimonials from drug-related offenders and ex-offenders, and their families, on the far ranging consequences of their criminal convictions.

Inspired by Steven Spielberg's Shoah Project, which gathered video testimonies from survivors and other witnesses to the Holocaust, the Unheard Voices documentary project is building an archive of testimonies on the cultural holocaust that has been the War on Drugs.

"No issue has had more impact on the criminal justice system in the past three decades than national drug policy. The 'war on drugs,' officially declared in the early 1980s, has been the primary contributor to the enormous growth of the prison system in the United States during the last quarter-century and has affected all aspects of the criminal justice system and, consequently, American society." ~ The Sentencing Project, "A 25 Year Quagmire: The 'War on Drugs' and its Impact on American Society." (2007)

If you or anyone in your family has had a criminal conviction for a nonviolent drug-related offense, we would like to hear about the lasting impacts to your lives, and how you overcame your circumstances, or were permanently affected. Your stories will help put a human face on a critical social issue that has been overwhelmed by fear, politics, racial prejudice, and intolerance, in an era where the public attitude has been, "out of sight, out of mind." When the stories hit home, the policies begin to change.

We seek written testimonials and interview subjects for our video archive. If you would like your voice to be heard please contact Director Charles Shaw at charles.shaw@opendemocracy.net.

Unheard Voices is a collaborative venture of the Exile Nation Project, openDemocracy and the Tedworth Charitable Trust. Interviews & Testimonials will be initially published on the openDemocracy Drug Policy Forum.

We don't live in a police state. Hyperbole FTL.

Well, we live in a state where the people are afraid of the police, which is a problem.

And in parts of georgia, it sure feels like a police state.  Although that's usually in wealthy areas where the people there are the ones who want it that way.

I was arrested for small amount marijuana and paraphernalia when I was 18. They dropped the charges
down to misdemeanor disorderly conducts so that I could continue to serve in the military without
any blemishes. Served six years and left with an honorable discharge and commendations including
the bronze star and purple heart. Now even at 27, I am still discriminated against because employers
that require background checks can easily relate the "dismissed" drug charges with the disorderly conducts.

In short, "dropping" the drug charges has done nothing but ensure that I could continue serving the military,
but the drug charges are still on my background check clear as day. I may as well have been convicted of them.

Very interesting that you make the connection on how the drug war is a holocaust. Do you use the word holocaust because of political pressure to eradicate the "counter culture"?

I was thinking more along the lines that the government over the next few years will begin a massive fanatical propaganda campaign that is financed by but not run by them as a way to get the citizens to gain the trust of the media. They will not just vilifying users, but brainwash other people to think that users are less than human, that they are insects, only worthy to be crushed under the foot of justice. Then, a detrimental catastrophe will occur: a high ranking official is assassinated, building is destroyed, a child in a Texas suburb is taken; which will trigger the brainwashed masses to react violently. Crowds of people will form make shift militias arming themselves with their weapons that are afforded to them under the 2nd amendment and gathering all the Medical Marijuana lists, police files of paroled drug offenders, and other sources of information that identify drug users and begin to systematically hunt and exterminate every user and drug sympathizer. Self-testing drug kits will be utilized to determine if one is indeed a user or not and upon negative results the user will be "cleansed". Secretly, the government will be funding the heads of these militias and encourage them to continue their campaign, which they do until the militia can't find anymore users to kill. We have to be careful that our future doesn't end up like this!

You must be confused, I never even used the word "holocaust" in anything I said there.

Lulz the use of the word 'holocaust' in this thread triggered some interesting 'similar threads' results

"Prohibition cannot be enforced for the simple reason that the majority of American people do not want it enforced and are resisting its enforcement. That being so, the orderly thing to do under our form of government is to abolish a law which cannot be enforced, a law which the people of the country do not want enforced."

New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia, 1944.

I can't wait for this to come around. This "Drug War" is a huge waste of honest tax paying people's money. Since I started smoking marijuana, I've realized all the bullshit I've been told my whole life to believe about drugs and how a "moral society" is supposed to be. The idea that marijuana, a non-habit forming and non-fatal plant, is illegal and alcohol is A-OK makes me wonder how blind society really is. It's ok to drink just about anywhere and appropriate to even drink in front of children, but if you smoke a joint you'll be arrested and forever be branded a criminal. Hell, if you smoke pot in front of a young kid you'd probably be labeled a violent criminal, pedophile, and overall scumbag.
--------

On another note- friend of mine had a wiring fraud charge and was put on probation. A couple months later he tested positive for thc in a drug test and he was put in jail for three weeks. Now his original wiring fraud charge was completely dropped and his case was transferred to a drug court that has given him another probation period.

Tell me. Is it fair that someone should be drug tested when their original criminal charge had nothing to do with drugs? Was it necessary to spend hundreds-- maybe thousands of dollars in tax payer money to have the case transferred to a different court and different probation officer?

Penn & Teller's: Bullshit! Has a great episode on the Drug War that I would encourage a lot of people to check out.
----

So so so many things that I could say about this stupid drug war.

Yep, all that was accomplished in the 80's and continues today. (Thanks Mrs. Reagan).

You can be charged with "Child endangerment." Your child can be taken away from you.
