Coir as bulk substrate

So, I just read the following Tek on using coco coir as a bulk substrate, and had a few questions about it.
http://www.shroomery.org/10858/How-to-do-Coir
1. Has anybody had success with this method?
2. What measures did you take to ensure sterility? Does letting the coir/verm mix sit in the (hot) boiled water pasteurize it?
3. What methods did you use to humidify the fruiting chamber? Since there is no place to possibly put pearlite, I'm guessing that an ultrasonic is needed if you want to avoid misting.
4. I'm assuming that fanning 2+ times a day is still necessary despite the holes, correct?
Thanks in advance!

1. It works great. My buddy uses it all the time, lots of people do. 2. Just follow the tek. 3. If you're doing monos, they have their own humidity in the sub. You may have to mist once you put them in fruiting conditions, but they are sealed prior to this during colonization. Ideally you won't have to mist at all but you may find it beneficial. 4. Sure wouldn't hurt.

Rad. I really like this method, I think I'll give it a try with my rye jars! Of course, I'll use clear containers though instead of the opaque one shown in the Tek.
Two final questions:
1. What kind of difference in results would you expect from using an opaque tub instead of a clear one? Is it more difficult to start pinning, and will the mushrooms grow sideways?
2. Also, how large are the holes drilled into the sides of the tub?

Ive had good results with Coir/coffee/gypsum/verm. Dont boil the water. I get it up to 190 degrees, pour it ontop and cover the bucket with blankets. It drops to 180-165 and hovers around there for a couple hours. The tubs are preference. You should line your tub either way so it shouldnt matter. Ive seen people use 2inch holes in some teks and 1inch holes in other mono teks. Just find a tek and stick with it.
Good Luck.

I don't have ready access to verm here so I use choir in everything even pf all around that stuff is awesome what I do for my bulk is toss in a few pinches of garden gypsum and a bit of spent coffee and my mushies went ape shit I'm just starting my mini mono but strangely enough I have had the best luck with one of those foldgers red plastic coffee cans with tons of little 1 mm holes and four 9mm holes and a clear plastic window glued in to the lid

Here dude is a link to my tek which is the same tek and this link is on the boards you can read everyones responses. If you follow the tek like it is written it will work.
I have grown well over 100 mono tubs using my coir tek. If you don't get the concept of how a mono tub works then you should read either ohmatic mono tub or monstermitchs mono tub tek.

Damion5050's tek is a good one. Follow it and you will grow mushrooms and be very happy with your results

Thanks a lot Damion! I'll definitely be going with your tek, I must say it looks pretty damn good. I have one final question for you guys though:
In my experience, clear plastic tubs have a greater tendency to crack while drilling than opaque tubs. Is there a specific brand of clear tubs or type of plastic you can recommend to avoid this?

use a step bit http://blog.makezine.com/upload/2009/03/toolbox_ten_tools_you_wont_want_to/stepBit.jpg
and drill slow and dont push hard. if you still have problems use a plywood backer.

lol
got a 4 oz (1/4 pint) inoculated right now.
Reason for using a 1/4 pint is because I had very little spore solution left in my syringe and it made sense to try and do something productive with it instead of clearing out the syringe; awaiting a spore print.
Well my question, I guess you could say, is what would be best to spawn this tiny little jar to? Apparently a jar of this small volume will prove insufficient as a fruited cake, soooo.... I'm guessing crumbling it and spawning it in a bucket with coir etc... would prove best results? I also have a giant 1.5 gallon plastic beer bottle that came with a co2 tap dispenser, it seems great as it is considerably wider than a 3-liter bottle and yet it fits perfectly inside my desk cabinet, which stay at a constant temperature between 72-78 degrees. A/C is always on unless temps get under 70 degrees.
So... use the big bottle as a FC? OR use it as a bucket-type case which I can use coir/verm/gymsum/spent coffee etc... to spawn the jar to...
Suggestions? Sorry don't mean to hijack but I too have a interest in coir as a spawn since you only need pasteurize.
EDIT: Or maybe make a shotgun FC then case the 1/4 pint with coir+ into a food tray and place it in the FC?

As stated take your time drilling dont push to hard and dont try to rush it. I use a hole saw bit on my drill.

Just have patience when you drill, dont rush it, it may take a minute, but you can drill through it without cracking
