how should I dry my beautiful Ganoderma tsugae (Hemlock Varnish Shelf)
    #12682541 - 06/04/10 12:06 AM (1 year, 8 months ago)

I just found a conifer with 6 lovely little Ganoderma tsugae (hemlock varnish shelf) mushrooms on it.  As this is a type of reishi mushroom and therefore contains immensely powerful medicinal properties, I would like to dry them to make tea.  How should I go about this?  I was thinking i would cut them into strips, dry them on a screen, and then suspend them on some wire above a desiccant, similar to how the cultivated P. cubensis are dried in this forum.  Does this sound like the proper way to dry them?

Does anyone have experience using the hemlock varnish shelves medicinally?

What do you think of my mushies?

Sounds good  Beautiful looking mushrooms, what are their medicinal properties?

That should work perfectly.

Apparently, reishi should provide a boost to the general immune system and is also argued to have tumor-repressing properties. Scientific evidence for these properties is slim, as far as I know, and exact mechanisms of operation are still unknown. Nevertheless, reishi has been a popular medical aid in Asia for millennia, and has enjoyed increasing popularity in Western alternative subcultures for the past few decades.

Cheers koraks  Although I am a bit skeptical about some of the asian natural 'medicines' I'm sure it can only be helpful to eat edible mushrooms, if only for their vitamin B12, potassium and phosphorous as well as protein and fiber. + low in calories too

Enjoy dankster, let us know how they taste

I share your skepticism, but I really like eating gourmet mushrooms, they're a great food if only for their taste and texture. I've never tried reishi, but I understand its taste is not quite the reason why it's so popular, to put it mildly. Nevertheless, judging by the vast numbers of people who consume it regularly, there should be no particular risks associated to drinking the odd cup of reishi tea. Do share your experiences with this interesting mushroom!

"A study of three Ganoderma species, performed at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, comparing the aqueous extracts  of G. lucidum, G. sinense, and G. tsugae, reported that G. tsugae was the most potent at inhibiting the proliferation of human breast cancer cells. (PMID: 17034284)

Another study from the East, has shown that G. tsugae contains water-soluble polysaccharides which produced tumor inhibition ratios of 95.1-100.0% and prolonged life span by 236.3-267.5%, when administered to mice with sarcoma 180 (Wang, G. et al. 1993). "

Yes, there is some evidence, but not of large scale quantitative studies in human subjects, as far as I know of. The results are encouraging enough to give it a try though, I think. Thanks for quoting those articles
