I was at Lowes today and saw they had 40lb bags of mushroom compost for $3.xx so I looked closer and it sounds like a much better casing material than the 50/50+ I was planning to use and the Calcium Carbonate was proving to be very difficult to find. So here is what the bag says let me know how it sounds and if anyone has any experience with it. Also do I use this the same as the 50/50+?
Gardenscape Mushroom Compost All Natural Organic Soil Mulch
Made of a decomposed mixture of Wheat Straw, Fibrous Peat, Gypsum, Dolomite, Crushed Feathers, Cottonseed, Peanut Meal and other nutritious ingredients (what ever that means).
The bag then goes onto explain their process of preparing the compost which it sounds basically like some high end mushroom farmer uses the compost for 1 flush then sells it to this company who allows it to decompose for 3 months for aeration before packaging it for sale.
The bag also says it is sterlized but I'd just reather sterilize it myself to be safe, I know there are plenty of Teks with a pillow case or something I'll have to search and read up on that. Feel free to share any awesome Teks for that you have bookmarked!
Hmm I've been reading with the search and it sounds like it may be treated with fungicides and be mostly spent for nutrents... maybe I'll just do one casing with it and case the other "tubs" with 50/50+ w/o the calcium carbonate
I have been using mushroom compost for a number of years and has found this product to be excellent as a soil amendment. Having said this, don't use it on rhododendrons, azaleas because it contains some salt.
I mix the mushroom with yard dirt when planting and the plants seem to do better than any other compost (bought) I have used.
I purchase this product at Lows too and you can't beat it for the price. So, go ahead and try it and I guarantee you will be surprised by the results.
