ID request: Red pouch Weraroa?
    #12530171 - 05/09/10 02:15 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Went for a wander in some of the gardens in Wellington today and found a whole bunch of these. Searched for ages and found them in the most obvious spot right at the end :-)

Found a nice blue Weraroa on Saturday morning. Hope these are the red Weraroa. If they are, are they active like the blue ones?

Habitat: Damp mulch. Looked quite new, like it hadn't been there for a long time.

Gills: Not too sure. They're inside the pouch and the only ones with holes look like they've rotted or something.

Stem: Whitish, some are kinda orangy red - like the one near the top right of the first pic.

Cap: Orange red - some have paler orange patches on them.

Spore print color: Haven't done one. Not sure if I can.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Wellington gardens.

Neat collection!

Those are indeed Leratiomyces erythrocephalus, the secotioid cousin to L. ceres.
This mushroom is not active.

Grrr... I was so hoping I'd hit the mother load! :-)

The little blue Weraroa I found on Saturday bruised real dark blue pretty quick so I was thinking that these probably weren't active - no bruising at all.

Weird red head kid Mayo!! Scared my girlfriend a little haha

Sorry, I got the species name wrong.  It is Leratiomyces erythrocephalus, not L. similis!
